The Inn at Sunset Cliffs
1370 Sunset Cliffs Blvd

The Inn at Sunset Cliffs is a small mid-range property in a prime coastal location that's beautiful enough for weddings and convenient enough for accessing SeaWorld, a five-minute drive away. Its two-story cul-de-sac layout surrounds an outdoor courtyard with a pool, garden area, and scenic terrace overlooking the surrounding beaches. Amenities are simple, as there's no restaurant, breakfast, or bar. Guests will find a neighboring cafe and a nearby taco truck for dining choices. The 24 guest rooms rooms have been upgraded with coastal accents and modern technology, taking design inspiration from Santorini, Greece. Some rooms offer full kitchens. Travelers looking for more features should check rates at Days Hotel - Hotel Circle by SeaWorld -- it has a burger restaurant, small gym, and laundry facilities.

Humphreys Half Moon Inn
2303 Shelter Island Dr

Humphreys Half Moon Inn & Suites is a fun, upper-middle-range hotel with a tropical ambiance that reflects its location on Shelter Island, directly across the San Diego Bay from downtown. Its 182 rooms are clean, spacious, and tastefully decorated, and come with microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. Many feature patios or balconies with lovely views. The lushly landscaped hotel gets especially lively when its concert venue hosts national touring acts. The lounge also offers live music, and the large heated pool has seasonal bar service. Rates are competitive, but resort and parking fees hike up the prices. A good alternative is the upper-middle-range Kona Kai Resort and Spa, which is also on Shelter Island and offers a spa and its own beach.

1906 Lodge
1060 Adella Ave

Among the nicest places to stay in Coronado, 1906 Lodge is a cozy, upper-middle range property that was built in 1906 as a boarding house. Furnishings such as wooden bookshelves and painted glass lamps give the 17 rooms a homey feel. There’s no pool on-site, but it’s a short walk to the beach. Guests won’t find a full restaurant or bar on-site either, but a breakfast buffet with a daily hot dish and bottomless mimosas is provided as well as afternoon snacks and freshly baked cookies. For a more affordable place to stay, guests can check out Glorietta Bay Inn, a mid-range hotel with a pool.

Hilton San Diego Mission Valley
901 Camino Del Rio S

The upper-middle-range Hilton San Diego Mission Valley is a fresh and modern business hotel that was renovated in 2015. It’s in a high-traffic area adjacent to the Mission Valley Freeway, but only 15 minutes from downtown and the airport. It offers meeting space for up to 750 people, as well as a nice fitness center and heated outdoor pool. The 350 rooms aren’t large, but they’re clean and nicely decorated, and come with mini-fridges and coffeemakers. Downsides include expensive parking and freeway noise. Another option could be the upper-middle-range Crowne Plaza Hotel San Diego-Mission Valley, which offers a free shuttle service and hotel quiet zones that appeal to business travelers.

Capri by the Sea by All Seasons Resort Lodging
4767 Ocean Blvd

Capri by the Sea is a high-rise condominium building with privately owned units that are rented as hotel rooms by the management company All Seasons Resort Lodging. As such, the rooms have decor and amenities that vary by owner -- some are in great shape and others are in need of serious housekeeping with outdated furnishings -- but each has a full kitchen and private balcony with ocean views. The on-site amenities are slim outside of the outdoor pool and hot tub, which are a short walk down the road from the condos. The property is located on the boardwalk, which is ideal for families looking to hang out on the beach who don't mind the chance that they'll end up in a less appealing room. (Specific rooms cannot be requested in advance.) Travelers who want to know what they're getting for their buck would be better off springing for the higher rates at the Pacific Terrace Hotel next door, or the considerably cheaper Ocean Park Inn down the street.

Handlery Hotel San Diego

The 217-room, mid-range Handlery Hotel San Diego was built in 1954 and it shows in the guest rooms, especially in the small, dated bathrooms and the sliding doors leading out to the pool. But the hotel scores well on its location, free local shuttle, large pool, and reasonable rates, all of which tends to draw plenty of tourists and convention groups. Some guests complain of noise from rooms closest to the highway and the fee for parking. Mission Valley offers lots of newer, mid-range hotels at comparable rates such as the Hampton Inn San Diego-Sea World/Airport Area, so shop around before booking.

The Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter

The Westin Gaslamp Quarter is an upscale, 450-room hotel set in the San Diego's bustling Gaslamp Quarter. The rooms in this modern property provide a particularly calming environment and some even offer partial views of San Diego bay. However, fees for the breakfast buffet and parking can leave guests feeling nickel-and-dimed. It may be worth comparing rates with the nearby and more stylish Palomar or Andaz hotels.

Blue Sea Beach Hotel
707 Pacific Beach Drive

Directly on the sand in Pacific Beach, the mid-range Blue Sea Beach Hotel is all about its fun-in-the-sun location. Oceanfront rooms overlook the waves, and only a glass wall separates the pool from the beach boardwalk. The 126 rooms were nicely renovated in 2016, and the lobby has playful, breezy decor, homey hangout spaces, and vintage video games. When it comes to services, the Blue Sea is more motel than hotel, though the prices commanded by the location might promise more. Upon check-in guests are required to sign a no-excessive-noise agreement, which says something about the party crowd the hotel attracts. For those who value quiet, the Surfer Beach Hotel is also right on Pacific Beach and has a pool, but it's an older, motel-style property.

Ocean Beach Hotel
5080 Newport Ave

The main highlight that draws guests to the two-pearl Ocean Beach Hotel is its convenient location across the street from the beach and on restaurant- and shop-lined Newport Avenue. It's a modest budget property that doesn't offer much in terms of features, but guest rooms are clean and homey, and come equipped with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi, plus most have furnished balconies/patios and some have ocean views. Tiny bathrooms are due for an update. There are laundry facilities, as well as free parking, while a pet-friendly policy allows dogs in ground-floor rooms. For something with more features, check out the mid-range Inn at Sunset Cliffs, which has an outdoor pool, massages, and yoga classes -- but it's not as close to the beach.

Kona Kai Resort & Spa, A Noble House Resort
1551 Shelter Island Dr

With its own beach, private marina, and updated spa, the Kona Kai feels more like a vacation resort than anything else. It's also farther down on the Shelter Island strip, making for a quieter, more relaxing spot than other area hotels -- with little to spoil the views from the gorgeous outdoor pool. Outfitted with small private balconies or patios, rooms are colorful enough to cover up the fact that some furnishings are worn. Still, boating enthusiasts, couples, and families willing to overlook a pesky resort fee can find plenty of amenities here, and business travelers will be close to the airport.
