Best Western Plus Hacienda Hotel Old Town
4041 Harney St

The touristy Old Town area gets a lot of traffic, but this mission-style hotel is also surrounded by parks, and its sprawling layout on a hillside keeps it above the fray. Shops and restaurants are within walking distance, and the neighborhood is filled with character, with such sights as the historic Whaley House Museum, among other old, original Spanish buildings. The large rooms have great Southwest character, though their layout is peculiar and the bathrooms are too small. The grounds of the Best Western Plus Hacienda Hotel Old Town are big and beautiful -- but be prepared to climb stairs.

Kings Inn San Diego

The Kings Inn doesn’t take pains to hide its retro look, and is even incorporating it into an ongoing remodel. The well-maintained budget property keeps rates low, and has 140 clean rooms, some of which have vintage-style modern furniture. The outdoor heated pool is open year-round, and there are two reasonably priced, kid-friendly restaurants, including the popular Waffle Spot, a funky diner with a big breakfast menu. The hotel is right by Freeway Eight, so light-sleepers may want to request rooms facing the inner courtyard. Otherwise, guests who appreciate the casual 1960s vibe will feel right at home.

Crowne Plaza Hotel San Diego - Mission Valley
2270 Hotel Circle North Mission Valley San Diego

The upper-middle-range Crowne Plaza Hotel San Diego isn't an ideal spot for those hoping to walk to attractions, but its relatively central location right off the freeway makes it a convenient base for driving around the city. The tropical decor feels dated, and enforced quiet zones, the nearby golf course, and large rooms with ergonomic work chairs make the venue a fit for business travelers, but everyone has to sign up with IHG's rewards club (it's free) if they don't want to pay for Wi-Fi. The nearby Courtyard Marriott is a bit pricier, but it’s much more modern -- with free Wi-Fi for all. Just to the south in Old Town, BEST WESTERN PLUS Hacienda Hotel has interesting local flair and cheaper rates.****

Residence Inn San Diego Downtown/Gaslamp Quarter

This mid-range property in the Gaslamp Quarter is surprisingly stylish for a Residence Inn, and one of the most family-friendly properties in San Diego, despite its happening location. It's easy to save money on food here -- rooms all have kitchens, there's a barbecue area next to the small pool, and the buffet breakfast is free. There's also plenty of room for families to spread out: the smallest room starts at 400 square feet, and many rooms have sofa beds. All in all, it’s a great value -- but families may also want to consider the nearby Hotel Solamar.

Best Western Yacht Harbor Hotel
5005 N Harbor Dr

This budget hotel has a great location by the harbor and Point Loma Naval Base, and is a good value for the amenities. The 90-room property offers free breakfast; a shuttle bus service to the airport, cruise ship terminal, and train station; and free parking -- a rarity for San Diego. While very convenient to the airport, it’s not right in the middle of downtown, but most attractions are an easy drive or bus ride away. Some guest rooms have marina views, and while popcorn ceilings make them look a touch dated, they're otherwise clean and modern. This is an ideal spot for fishing and for travelers who enjoy being by the water.

Wyndham San Diego Bayside
1355 North Harbor Drive

This upper-middle-range hotel has a great location right on North San Diego Bay, across from cruise ship terminals and an easy walk to attractions such as the USS Midway and Seaport Village. Some of the 600 pet-friendly rooms have balconies with water views, and all have coffeemakers and modern, somewhat corporate decor. Amenities include a heated outdoor pool, gym, and Ruth’s Chris Steak House attached to the hotel. The hotel looks pleasant and feels fresh, thanks to multimillion dollar renovations completed in 2014, but still is generic and unassuming, with no distinguishing style. It is priced well for an updated property by the water, and rates are generally lower than other hotels in the area.

Hilton San Diego Airport/Harbor Island
1960 Harbor Island Dr

Unlike at most airport hotels, the rooms here have pleasant views of either the harbor or bay due to a unique location on Harbor Island. The property has an ideal location for those wanting to jog along the water or take a free shuttle to the airport, but the distance from everything else is a drawback. The lack of traffic also makes it one of the quieter hotels in the area, while a rather busy decor can be found in guest rooms. With an outdoor pool, meeting facilities, fitness center, and restaurant, this Hilton checks all the boxes for a modern upper-mid-range hotel.

Ramada by Wyndham Gaslamp Convention Center

Built in 1913, this mid-range Ramada Inn retains an old-fashioned look with some antique details, including a pair of 1913 elevators, and original chandeliers and marble stairs. The hotel’s location in the middle of San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter is arguably its best feature, and puts it within stumbling distance of many restaurants, bars, and clubs. The hotel also has its own 24-hour restaurant with a comfortably worn mahogany bar. While the common areas and 99 guest rooms are clean and mostly well-maintained, the overall look of this hotel is a bit dated, with some furnishings that seem a few decades old. The tiny gym is also a throwaway, with just two machines. Prices are good for this part of town, and some guests will appreciate the antique features. Guests seeking a more modern property can try the Bristol Hotel, which often has comparable rates on weekdays.

Found Hotel San Diego
505 W Grape St

Hotel Vyvant is a modern bed and breakfast with stylish rooms and an inviting staff. All but the smallest economy units have en suite bathrooms as well as extras like Keurig machines. Local producers supply the food and beverages served here and breakfast is free. The surrounding neighborhood of Little Italy has distinctive cafes and bakeries as well, but some of the area’s allure gets lost in the one-way streets and heavy traffic surrounding this boutique property. Light sleepers who flinch at the idea of a crowded on-ramp right outside should pass on this one.

Holiday Inn San Diego-Bayside
4875 N Harbor Dr

Split between an older building with a pool and restaurant and a newer addition with hipper decor, this Holiday Inn has a layout that's confusing for some to navigate. Although it's within walking distance of America's Cup Harbor, the hotel doesn't have the most idyllic views either, being tucked between a major boulevard and a giant parking lot. Some of the mid-range rooms have better views of the pool area. Family-friendly recreation options can be found here as well. Business travelers appreciate the property’s proximity to the airport, and the hotel offers a free shuttle.
