Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina
333 West Harbor Drive

The upscale Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina is a massive convention hotel chock full of amenities that’s adjacent to the San Diego Convention Center on San Diego Bay. Spectacular views of the bay and city skyline are seemingly everywhere, including from the 1,305 rooms in the two high-rise towers. Highlights include a spa, huge fitness center, multiple restaurants, two heated pools surrounded by beautiful landscaping, marina, and event space for 3,700 people. On the downside, rates often spike quite high, parking is expensive, and Wi-Fi isn’t free for everyone. Rooms are clean and spacious, with 24/7 room service, mini-fridges, robes, and coffeemakers. North Tower rooms have balconies, but bathrooms in the standard rooms of both towers are small and drab. It's worth comparing rates with the adjacent Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego

Holiday Inn Express San Diego Sea World - Beach Area
4540 Mission Bay Dr

The lower-middle-range Holiday Inn Express San Diego Sea World - Beach Area is conveniently located near Mission Beach and Interstate 5. It's within a 15-minute drive of downtown San Diego, SeaWorld, Balboa Park, and the airport. But, not much of note is within walking distance. Highlights include a free hot breakfast, free parking and Wi-Fi, and a heated outdoor pool and fitness center, although both are small. Rooms are also on the small side, especially the bathrooms, but they were updated in 2012 and remain clean and well equipped with Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and microwaves. Travelers might want to compare rates with the Holiday Inn Express San Diego Airport-Old Town. It’s is a little closer to most attractions and offers free shuttles to the airport, downtown, and the Gaslamp Quarter.

Embassy Suites by Hilton San Diego Bay Downtown

This all-suite hotel, popular with business travelers and convention goers, is just down the road from the San Diego Convention Center. It's also a block away from Seaport Village's shopping by the harbor and is within walking distance of the Gaslamp Quarter's restaurant and bar scene, making it a good spot for tourists as well. A renovation in 2015 refreshed the rooms, which were looking beat up after many years of wild Comic Con attendees taking over the place. The Embassy Suites is significantly less impressive than the nearby Manchester Grand Hyatt or the Marriott Marquis & Marina, but it's also quieter and considerably less expensive.

Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa

Although the dated Polynesian-style decor and interiors could use an update, this three-pearl resort in San Diego's Pacific Beach area is a great family-friendly choice with an array of features and direct beach access. Set on pretty grounds filled with lush greenery, koi ponds, and exotic birds, the hotel offers two on-site eateries, a lovely outdoor pool and hot tub, as well as a spa, salon, and fitness center. There's even a beautiful classic boat that offers sunset cruises and family activities, transforming into a nightclub scene in the evenings. The 310 guest rooms are bland and could use a refresh, but they're spacious and outfitted with modern comforts like flat-screen TVs, Keurig machines, iHome docks, and free Wi-Fi, while studios and suites add kitchenettes and dining/living space. For nicer and more modern rooms, check out the similarly priced and also beachfront Paradise Point Resort and Spa in Mission Bay.

Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina
1380 Harbor Island Drive

This is a massive, upscale hotel near the marina and airport but far from the convention center, Old Town, and Gaslamp Quarter. With 1,053 rooms in two lodging towers, the property offers gorgeous waterfront views, water sports galore, three pools, and tennis courts. There is also a full-service spa and each tower has a modern fitness center. Dining options include fresh fish and steak, martinis and tapas, pub fare, and Starbucks. Business travelers will likely appreciate the business lobby, meeting spaces, and a FedEx office. Rooms feature nautical-inspired decor and many offer waterfront views. Some guests complain of minor cleanliness issues, however, and daily parking is pricey. Travelers may want to compare rates at the Hilton San Diego Airport/Harbor Island or Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Airport.

Horton Grand Hotel

The upper-middle-range Horton Grand Hotel is a charming destination property, with a prime location in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter that's a short walk to the convention center and other waterfront attractions. Its beautiful interiors, dating to 1886, feature polished marble floors, rich oak paneling, and a New Orleans-style interior courtyard. The opulent Palace Bar showcases a majestic staircase and a huge mural. It’s a lovely hotel that's heavy on ambience, but there's no pool or fitness center, and the valet-only parking is expensive. The 108 rooms are individually decorated with antiques and gas fireplaces; many have private balconies, and King Suites include kitchenettes. Travelers could also try the stylish Hotel Solamar San Diego nearby, which has a rooftop pool and free nightly receptions.

Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown

Don't let the chain name fool you -- this 245-room Courtyard by Marriott is decidedly upscale. It is housed in a 1920s bank building, and historical elements have been preserved throughout (particularly in the grand lobby). Rooms are stylish and contemporary, and some have bay views. The location in San Diego's happening Gaslamp Quarter is near some of the city's best nightlife. The lobby restaurant, aptly called The Lobby, serves California cuisine for three meals a day, and there's even a Starbucks on-site. Just note that valet parking is a bit pricey, and the elevators can be slow during busy check-in times. It's a great value for the area -- the nearby San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter is similarly priced, but not nearly as nice.

Super 8 by Wyndham San Diego Hotel Circle

The budget Super 8 San Diego Hotel Circle is right off the Mission Valley Freeway -- a short drive to most of San Diego’s top sights. Its 144 rooms are outfitted with modish decor, mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers, but they're on the small side, and maintenance and housekeeping can fall short. The free hot breakfast buffet includes meats and eggs, but finding a seat at one of the tables can be a challenge at peak times. Unlike many other hotels in the Hotel Circle, the hotel offers free parking, but its small lot can fill up quickly. Travelers might want to also check out Days Hotel - Hotel Circle by SeaWorld, which has a restaurant and free parking, but rates are slightly higher.

Surfer Beach Hotel
711 Pacific Beach Dr

The lower-middle-range Surfer Beach Hotel enjoys an unbeatable location steps away from the sand and surf of the world-famous Pacific Beach. Guests can walk for miles along the boardwalk that’s lined with lively restaurants, bars, and shops. Amenities at this older, motel-style property are limited, with no restaurant, breakfast, or bar, but, it does offer free coffee, on-site parking, free Wi-Fi, and a heated salt water pool. Many of its 54 rooms have balconies with spectacular ocean views, but the rooms are small and need a makeover. The cramped bathrooms are especially dated and disappointing. Rates are attractive for the location, but other nearby beachfront options exist, such as the Ocean Park Inn, which has comparable rates, free breakfast, and generally nicer rooms.

The Westin San Diego
1051 Columbia Street 400 West Broadway

The Westin San Diego is a huge, upscale, 436-room hotel renovated in 2014. Set in the heart of downtown San Diego, the Westin is one of eight towers that make up the Emerald Plaza, one of the city's tallest complexes, and an iconic part of the skyline. The 26-story Westin is popular with both tourists, who will appreciate the hotel's proximity to restaurants, major sights, and public transportation, and business travelers, who have plenty of work areas and fully equipped conference rooms at their disposal. Westin loyalists appreciate the chain's signature simple and modern decor and "Heavenly" beds. Travelers who want to unwind at a dedicated spa could consider the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego, a business-oriented chain with a luxe spa.
