San Diego Marriott Del Mar
11966 El Camino Real

The upper-middle-range San Diego Marriott Del Mar is a business-oriented hotel that also appeals to discerning vacationers with a lovely pool area and other upscale amenities. It’s located just off Interstate 5, giving access to central San Diego in about 20 to 25 minutes. The elegant wood and marble lobby is impressive, and its acclaimed restaurant and sushi bar are popular with visitors and locals alike. The free area shuttle service also takes guests to Del Mar landmarks, restaurants, and shopping. Rooms are clean and spacious with modern decor and mini-fridges, but in-room Wi-Fi incurs a fee for non Marriott Rewards members, plus parking is pricey. Rates are competitive, but numerous area alternatives exist, such as the four-pearl San Diego Marriott La Jolla, which offers similar rates and amenities and is closer to downtown.

Hilton Garden Inn San Diego Old Town / SeaWorld Area
4200 Taylor St

Hilton Garden Inn San Diego Old Town/Sea World Area is a mid-range chain hotel with a convenient location for tourists. Numerous restaurants and shops are within a 10-minute walk. Popular attractions, like the San Diego Zoo and the Gaslamp Quarter, are about a 10-minute drive. The property offers 179 simple modern rooms with stylish touches like leather chairs and optional bathroom upgrades. Standard amenities include 47-inch flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and Keurig coffeemakers. The restaurant and bar serves hot buffet breakfast (for a fee), happy hour, and dinner. Other features include a fitness center and a lovely outdoor pool surrounded by fire pits and seating. Two meeting rooms, a business center, and outdoor event space also make this hotel popular among corporate travelers. Families might prefer Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa, offering direct beach access and water sports, but dated decor.

The Sofia Hotel

The Sofia Hotel Downtown is an upper-middle-range boutique property in a historic building located just four blocks from the Gaslamp Quarter. Convenient for business travelers and tourists, this location provides easy access to downtown offices as well as attractions and the I-5. The 211 guest rooms are small and efficient, with 42-inch flat-screen TVs, microwaves, and mini-fridges. Wellness is a focus here, with 24-hour fitness and yoga studios, bike rentals, and a small spa. The brasserie-style restaurant and bar get high marks from guests, but breakfast isn't free and there's a daily resort fee that includes Wi-Fi. Despite that, The Sofia offers some of the best rates in the area. Guests looking for bigger rooms and additional features such as a pool might prefer the Kimpton Hotel Palomar San Diego -- rates are typically higher, though.

The Keating Hotel by Pininfarina
2331 Second Avenue Bankers Hill San Diego

The Keating Hotel by Pininfarina is most notable for its striking red and black interiors designed by the Italian car company behind Ferrari and Maserati. Just like the cars, this historic hotel's makeover is sleek and chic, with a sexy ambience. The industrial-style rooms have Italian luxuries such as Lavazza espresso machines and custom-designed glass rainfall showers. Not everyone will appreciate the lack of privacy some of the showers offer, though, and guests have to pay for upscale amenities (Wi-Fi, turndown service, the Lavazza espresso and tea, and a welcome amenity) by way of the nightly resort fee. The Gaslamp Quarter location is great for partying, but travelers who don't want to be in the same building as Coyote Ugly, which is bumping late into the night, should check out the nearby Andaz San Diego, or the eco-friendly Hotel Indigo.

Homewood Suites by Hilton San Diego-Del Mar
11025 Vista Sorrento Parkway

The mid-range Homewood Suites by Hilton San Diego-Del Mar sits in a quiet residential area about a 10-minute drive from Del Mar, and a 20- to 25-minute drive from downtown -- free area shuttle service is available. Its 120 spacious suites have sleeper sofas and kitchens that include full-size fridges, stovetop burners, and dishwashers. The lovely outdoor patio has a small pool and whirlpool, and there's also a small fitness center. Travelers could also consider the hotel's adjacent sister property, the Hilton Garden Inn San Diego Del Mar, which has similar rates though rooms lack the same apartment-style amenities.

Courtyard San Diego Airport/Liberty Station
2592 Laning Rd

The 200-room, three-pearl Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Airport/Liberty Station has a name that suggests it’s merely an airport hotel, but there's more on offer. Yes, the airport is only four minutes away, but it’s also adjacent to a waterfront park with walking trails leading to nearby restaurants. Both the pool and outdoor lounge spaces make the most of this waterfront view. Rooms have attractive decor and up-to-date amenities like iHome docking stations. Overall, it’s a lovely hotel that’s perfectly suitable for both vacationing families and business travelers. Rates are competitive, but there's plenty of comparable hotels in the area including the Homewood Suites by Hilton San Diego Airport - Liberty Station.

Rancho Bernardo Inn

The 288-room Rancho Bernardo Inn features charming Spanish-Colonial-inspired design, a quiet location surrounded by residential homes, and a renowned golf course that is a destination unto itself. Despite the property's intimate vibe, the rooms are very spacious with a cozy and updated look: The bedding is soft and comfortable, the balconies and patios are vast, and the bathrooms are clean. But what's truly impressive are the inn's gorgeous grounds with fountains, gardens and well-maintained landscaping. These comfy, classy accommodations aren't surrounded by much in the way of local attractions, but there's so much to do on-site you may never have (or want) to leave. Rancho Bernardo has updated their number to (877) 269-5247.

Margaritaville Hotel San Diego Gaslamp Quarter

This 235-room Margaritaville Hotel San Diego Gaslamp Quarter just outside the Gaslamp Quarter is notable for its stylish rooms with beach-inspired decor and its attractive rooftop pool area. There are some great freebies -- a free nightly wine and beer hour, free coffee and tea in the lobby, free newspaper delivery, and free bicycles for exploring the city -- but you'll have to pay for parking, Wi-Fi, and business center services. The nearby Hard Rock Hotel is sometimes a little cheaper, but it's less kid-friendly.

Four Points by Sheraton San Diego Downtown Little Italy

This cylindrical, 220-room hotel became a Sheraton in May 2012 and received several upgrades as a result. A full-scale renovation of the property is planned to begin in fall 2012 and be completed by early 2013. This will include a larger lobby area and restaurant, as well as new hallways. Most amenities in the rooms themselves (mattresses, linens, etc) were changed as part of the transition as well. A few blocks north of the San Diego Concourse, the hotel is located right before a freeway on-ramp, conveniently close to the airport and major attractions. It still has some great freebies — free Wi-Fi, free morning newspaper, and a free shuttle to take you to the airport, for example. But the small pool and fitness center and out-of-the-way location near the highway are downsides. tag:revisit 7/1/2013

Homewood Suites by Hilton San Diego Airport - Liberty Station
2576 Laning Road

The mid-range Homewood Suites by Hilton San Diego Airport is packed with conveniences, especially for longer-term guests. It's about five minutes from the airport, and a free shuttle will take guests there and back. It offers free breakfast, dinner, and drinks, along with parking and a grocery shopping service. It's conveniently located for exploring the major attractions in San Diego, and it's also within walking distance of multiple restaurants and shops. The hotel has an outdoor pool and basketball court, and a walking trail is just outside the hotel. All 150 accommodations are suites with fully equipped kitchens and separate sitting areas. There aren't many other properties in this area, but guests could consider the similarly priced Residence Inn San Diego Downtown/Gaslamp Quarter, which also offers suites with kitchens.
