Hotel Gustave

Hotel Gustave is a mid-range hotel with chic decor that's just a 17-minute walk from the Eiffel Tower. Without a restaurant or bar, it's a little disappointing on the features front. However, it does provide a hot breakfast buffet (for a fee) daily, plus an honor bar and charming outdoor patio. The 32 rooms are comfortable and a bit tight, but well-equipped with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and kettles. Some rooms even have Eiffel Tower views. Travelers might also want to consider Le Derby Alma which is even closer to the Eiffel Tower and has an on-site bar, minibars with free soft drinks, and evening room service.

Ibis Paris Montmartre 18eme

The mid-range Ibis Paris Montmarte 18 eme sits at the foot of lively Montmarte, with the world-famous Moulin Rouge steps away. It’s a convenient location from which to explore the colorful district and the rest of Paris, with a major subway station nearby. Its 326 rooms are basic and on the small side, but they're tidy and pleasant, with comfortable beds. Amenities at this no-frills hotel are sparse, but it does offer a breakfast buffet (for a fee) and a bar with a snacks menu. Rates are good for its category and central location, and the property is surprisingly quiet given its size. But travelers looking for a more intimate experience that’s still in Montmarte could consider the mid-range Le Relais Montmarte, though rates are higher.

Max Hotel

The 19-room, mid-range Max Hotel is situated beyond the tourist center in Paris' 14th Arrondissement. While many popular sights are not in walking distance, the metro, a three-minute walk from the hotel, can take guests to most hotspots in about a half hour. And surrounding streets have a plethora of restaurants and shops. Decor is chic, contemporary, and fresh with lots of natural light, wooden floors, and modern-art accents. Rooms feature individual wall-art, Nespresso coffeemakers, and luxurious rainfall showerheads. While the hotel has few extra property features, its trendy lobby doubles as a lounge, small bar, and breakfast area (though breakfast costs an extra fee). A small outdoor garden and business center are also on-site, but there's no fitness area or restaurant. Travelers that want to be walking distance to major attractions could consider the three-pearl Hotel Britannique.

La Maison Champs Elysees

Fashion-conscious Paris has an equally chic hotel in the upscale La Maison Champs Elysees, with 57 rooms and interiors designed by Belgian designer Martin Margiela. It's aptly located near Avenue Montaigne's designer boutiques, and the metro is a five-minute walk away. Futuristic monochromes meet avant-garde edginess in this striking 8th Arrondissement property, where mostly white decor, Trompe L'Oeil moldings, and minimalist furnishings combine to a lovely effect. Elegant rooms have smart TVs, free Wi-Fi, robes, and minibars, but some are small and have shower-only bathrooms. A bar and French restaurant are high-end, but the hotel lacks wellness facilities. An elevator is available and the garden is a popular spot for al fresco dining. Travelers may prefer Hotel Monge, which has more colorful rooms and a spa, but it's in the 5th Arrondissement.

Appart'City Confort Paris Grande Bibliothèque

The mid-range Park & Suites Paris Grande Bibliotheque is a 113-room apartment-style hotel in the 13th Arrondissement, just inside the periphery road that encircles Paris. All rooms include kitchenettes and a generically modern style, with features like air-conditioning and flat-screen TVs, but decor is quite sparse, bordering on austere. The hotel has a breakfast room and laundry room, but few other features, and the tired atmosphere doesn't win the most enthusiastic reports from previous guests. Travelers wanting to be closer to the city center could consider Hotel Lorette Opera, which has a mix of classic and contemporary interiors in the up-and-coming Pigalle area -- rates will only be slightly higher.

Hôtel Le Clos Medicis
Rue Monsieur Le Prince, 56 6th Arr.

The quaint and cozy Hotel Le Clos Medicis exudes old-world Parisian charm throughout its 18th century building, which located on Paris' Left Bank just around the corner from the Luxembourg Gardens. From the beamed ceilings to the lovely courtyard, this 38-room boutique property is warm and welcoming -- but not luxurious. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the property and a 24-hour lounge on-site, but breakfast is not included in the room rate and rooms (though charming) are very small and show signs of age.

Maison Astor Paris, Curio Collection by Hilton

The 129-room Hotel Astor Saint-Honore is an upper-middle-range property in the 8th Arrondissement, close to the Champs-Elysees as well as upscale shopping and major tourist attractions. Rooms are charming, with classic Parisian decor, and they all have balconies or terraces -- some with outstanding views of Paris. Some rooms and public spaces are in need of an update, however, but the hotel was acquired by the Hilton brand in 2015 and a makeover is planned for late 2016. The hotel's restaurant serves seasonal cuisine, and the British-style bar offers drinks and light fare. Groups can gather in the hotel's four meeting rooms and there's a small fitness room as well. The nearby InterContinental Paris Avenue Marceau is more modern, but rates will be higher.

Hotel du Cadran

Hotel du Cadran Tour Eiffel is a mid-range boutique with an excellent location in the 7th arrondissement near the Eiffel Tower, just off the bustling pedestrian shopping street Rue Cler and an easy walk to the metro. The hotel's 53 rooms (located in the main building and an across-the-street annex) are small, but a 2018 renovation left them stylish and equipped with flat-screen TVs, minibars, free Wi-Fi, and modern bathrooms. The vaulted-cellar breakfast room is also striking, and the breakfast buffet is solid (guests have the option of adding it to their rates). The Hotel du Champ de Mars right across the street is another mid-range boutique option offering more traditional decor with a dash of country charm.

Secret de Paris Hotel & Spa

The 29-room Secret de Paris Hotel & Spa is an upscale boutique with Paris-themed interiors, located off the tourist trail -- but on the outskirts of the Pigalle nightlife hub. Rooms are geared towards romancing couples, with adjustable mood lighting and tubs for two, but some might be a bit too cozy (read: small) even for the loved-up. Rates are what you'd expect for Paris, and you get plenty of extras for your euros (sauna, steam room), but for somewhere a little less gimmicky, try the similarly-priced Le Grey Hotel on the same road.

Maison Souquet

A former brothel across from the Moulin Rouge, Maison Souquet evokes the debaucherous history of Belle Epoque Paris. Stepping inside transports you to turn-of-the-century Montmartre, where ladies of the night waited for high society men to greet them in their boudoirs. Each area of Maison Souquet makes reference to its pleasure house history, and while the setting is always PG-rated, it certainly won't suit all tastes. Private butlers attend to each of the hotel’s 20 guest rooms, which feature sensuous, over-the-top decor and luxe amenities. The hotel’s surrounding neighborhood, Pigalle, can be a little seedy at night; travelers looking for a posh hood may prefer Hotel Da Vinci & Spa, located in St-Germain-des-Pres.
