Rosen Inn International

This budget-friendly, family-centric property offers plenty of freebies, making it a solid value; children eat free, there’s a free shuttle to nearby attractions (though Disney parks are not included), and parking and Wi-Fi also come included in the rates. Rooms are spacious and feature modern amenities. However, the decor is not particularly stylish and there are some quirks -- rooms have exterior entrances and odd setups with the microwaves in the bathrooms.

Buena Vista Suites
8203 World Center Dr

The Buena Vista Suites is on par with other modern budget-friendly hotels in the Orlando area with 279 one-bedroom suites, well-kept tennis and basketball courts, a gift shop, fitness center, pool and hot tub, game room, and on-site bar and restaurant. The hotel, which is in close proximity to theme parks, offers a free shuttle bus to some attractions, appealing to families. But, unlike its competitors nearby, like Bryan's Spanish Cove, this hotel does not offer free Wi-Fi in the common areas or in the traditional (some might say dated) rooms, decorated in browns and greens with mini-fridges and flat-screen TVs.

Days Inn by Wyndham Orlando Conv. Center/International Dr
9990 International Dr

As the name so clearly states, this Days Inn is right next to the Orange County Convention Center and conveniently located along International Drive, which is lined with restaurants, shops, and tourist attractions. It's also within close driving distance of Universal Orlando, SeaWorld, and Aquatica. The rates are budget-friendly, making this property a popular choice for frugal business travelers and families on shorter vacations who don't plan to spend much time in the hotel. There are no frills here, and the rooms are on the small side. One significant perk is the large outdoor pool, which is a rare feature for a hotel in this price range. Check at the somewhat smaller Red Roof Inn, right behind the Days Inn, for better rooms at comparable (or even cheaper) rates.

Grande Villas Resort
12118 Turtle Cay Circle

For those who cherish the comforts of home, the Villas apartments, which range from one- to three-bedroom units, are spacious and fully stocked, right down to the laundry detergent and coffee. The sprawling outdoor pool area comes replete with an expansive mini golf course, a communal barbecue area, and a pizzeria/deli. Factor in that Disney World, Universal Studios, and Orlando’s other major fun parks are a short drive away, and the Villas can become an all-around great choice for families and large groups.

Days Inn by Wyndham Orlando Airport Florida Mall
9301 S Orange Blossom Trl

The Days Inn Orlando Airport Florida Mall might not be the best choice as the centerpiece of a full-blown Orlando vacation, but it's good value for a weekend or a night or two. With a bar and restaurant, a large, clean pool area, a business center, a free breakfast, and Wi-Fi throughout the property, it can fit the needs of business travelers or families passing through. The neighborhood is dodgy, though, and not one to walk through, especially after dark.

Hyatt Place Orlando Universal

Clean and modern, Hyatt Place at Universal is ideally located within a 15-minute drive of Walt Disney World and other attractions. It has a pool, a fitness center with cardio machines and free weights, a bar area, a business center, and almost 2,000 square feet of meeting space. It lacks the space, kitchens, and home-living facilities of other hotels in the area, and the panache of the Grande Villas and Hilton Grand down the road, but the Hyatt Place at Universal still offers high-quality hotel rooms at good value.

Comfort Inn International
8134 International Dr

The Comfort Inn International offers the standard features of a value chain hotel including a pool, free on-site parking, breakfast and coffee, and daily newspapers -- all at a budget-friendly price. Right off the freeway, the hotel is in a prime location and in walking distance of diners, fast food restaurants, and tourist attractions such as Ripley's Believe It or Not. Family theme parks are a short drive away from the hotel. The nearby BEST WESTERN International Drive, however, receives better customer reviews and it has a pool and a gym with similarly priced rooms.

I-Drive Grand Resort & Suites
7056 South Kirkman Road Southwest Orlando Orlando

I-Drive Grand Resort & Suites, formerly Anice Inn & Suites, is a two-pearl property comparable to other budget hotels in the area. The location near International Drive and Universal Studios -- plus the often incredibly low rates -- are the real draws here. However, this is an older hotel, and the rooms and outdoor swimming pools definitely show some wear. More troublesome are the constant guest complains regarding everything from long lines at check-in to the poor cleanliness and maintenance. Free breakfast, parking, and scheduled shuttle are nice perks. Check rates at the nearby Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando -- you'll lose the fitness center but will gain more dining options and nicer rooms.

Disney's Port Orleans Resort - French Quarter
2201 Orleans Drive, Lake Buena Vista

Strolling around Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter, it’s easy to forget you’re in central Florida. Pastel hued buildings with wrought-iron lattice work line the brick-paved walkways of this 1,008-room upper-middle-range property, where manicured gardens and trickling fountains evoke the breezy atmosphere of New Orleans. In true Disney fashion, the theme is meticulously carried out across the property. The pool alludes to the mystical quality of the Louisiana bayou with a giant sea serpent that criss-crosses the water, while the quick-service restaurant serves jambalaya, po’boys, and etouffee. Steamboat style water taxis can transport guests to Disney Springs and the neighboring Port Orleans Riverside. Another one of Disney’s Moderate Resort Hotels, Riverside can be a good alternative with similar rooms, but it offers more amenities, like multiple pools, a full-service restaurant, and a pet-friendly policy.

Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge
2901 Osceola Parkway, Lake Buena Vista

Modeled after a traditional "kraal" (village), Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge brings a slice of Africa to Orlando. Surrounded by four massive savannas, this 972-room upscale hotel offers guests a hands-on safari experience. Balconies overlook zebra watering holes, safari guides are on-hand to explain the differences between gazelle species, and custom trucks give guests special access to giraffes, impalas, and wildebeest. Rooms are infused with authentic African decor and artwork, and the hotel’s top-notch amenities like a pool, multiple restaurants, and a fitness center, make it one of Disney’s best Deluxe properties. However, it’s at least a 10-minute drive from most Disney attractions, and there’s no monorail or water taxi service (only shuttle buses). The Grand Floridian offers more convenient transportation options, but it doesn’t have AKL’s intriguing African theme.
