Quality Suites Universal South
9350 Turkey Lake Rd

This 214-room, two-pearl chain hotel is located within easy driving access of Orlando’s major theme parks. It's not the type of place visitors would want to spend more time than necessary, and is best used as a budget-friendly short stay option for theme park visits. Carpeting and furniture is old and in need of replacement, but all rooms have a microwave and mini-fridge and are spacious enough for families. It is considerably more affordable than nearby hotels such as the Avanti Resort, and includes free breakfast and an outdoor pool.

Monumental Hotel Orlando
12120 International Dr

Situated in a quiet, lush area off of International Drive -- but still within a 10-minute drive of Disney World -- the Monumental Hotel Orlando is a mid-range, old-school option. There's a certain faded elegance here, and the breezy tropical vibe gives this hotel a bit more character than surrounding chains, but the 94 enormous rooms are outdated (as is much of the property). There is a fantastic outdoor pool with a waterfall feature and cabanas, but there are fees for Wi-Fi and breakfast. The nearby Westgate Lakes Resort & Spa might be a better option for families, with features like a play room and basketball court.

Wyndham Bonnet Creek Resort
9560 Via Encinas, 9560 Via Encina

A non-Disney time-share resort on the Disney World property with enormous one- and two-bedroom condos, five elaborate pools, free Internet and parking, and a quieter, relaxed atmosphere just five minutes from Epcot makes the Wyndham Bonnet Creek Resort a good alternative for those who want a respite from Disney's pervasive theme-driven atmosphere. Service can be middling at this upper-mid-range property and lines can get long, but with several on-site restaurants and activities for little ones, some families have reported skipping a day at Disney in favor of the lazy river and pizza here.

Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Orlando East - UCF Area
12250 E Colonial Dr

The 91-room Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Orlando East - UCF Area is a two-and-a-half-pearl property near Central Florida Research Park and the University of Central Florida, but about a 30-minute drive from Disney World. Nice amenities include free substantial breakfast, a fitness center, outdoor pool with lounge chairs, and a laundry room. Corporate travelers might appreciate the business center and meeting room. Guest rooms are spacious and include a coffeemaker and flat-screen TV. For those that want to pay more to be closer to the theme parks, check rates at the Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando.

Homewood Suites by Hilton Lake Buena Vista-Orlando

The 130-room Homewood Suites by Hilton Lake Buena Vista-Orlando is an upper-middle-range hotel within a 10-minute drive of top local attractions, including Epcot, Magic Kingdom, and SeaWorld Orlando. Spacious suites have fully-equipped kitchens, lots of living space, and multiple flat-screen TVs. The dazzling lagoon-style outdoor pool and hot tub are a major plus, though this is shared with the next door Hilton Garden Inn (as is the fitness center). Other conveniences include free hot breakfast, evening reception several times a week, and a shuttle to Epcot. There are many similar properties in the area, however, such as the nearby Quality Suites Lake Buena Vista and the Embassy Suites Orlando/Lake Buena Vista Resort, so travelers might want to compare rates.

Holiday Inn Resort Orlando-Lake Buena Vista
13351 State Road 535

With a heated outdoor pool, a splash zone, and an arcade, Holiday Inn Resort Orlando-Lake Buena Vista has a lot of amenities to entertain children. The mid-range, chain hotel has 503 cheery rooms -- including kids' suites with bunk beds -- and an Applebee’s on-site. It’s in a convenient location near Disney World and offers free shuttles to area theme parks, but the shuttle is often crowded and has a limited schedule. Breakfast isn’t included in all room rates, and the hotel tacks on a resort fee. The pool area stays open late and can get noisy. For a similar price, guests may also want to check out the family-friendly Caribe Royale Orlando for its huge pool with fountains and a slide.

Ramada by Wyndham Orlando Downtown
3155 S John Young Pkwy

The 205-room, two-pearl Ramada Orlando Downtown is situated near Millenia Mall, within easy driving access of downtown Orlando and most area attractions. Rooms are bland but feature balconies with decent views of the surrounding area, mini-fridges, and microwaves; suites have separate living areas with extra beds. There's a pool and ample space for conferences and conventions, but overall this is not one of the Ramada chain’s nicest properties and is in need of some serious upkeep. Travelers looking for a more inspiring budget option should consider La Quinta Inn & Suites Orland Convention Center, which has fresher rooms and a free breakfast, though rates will be a bit higher.

Disney's BoardWalk Villas
2101 Epcot Resorts Blvd, Lake Buena Vista

Made to look like Atlantic City in the 1940s, the more subdued Boardwalk Villas rests beside a glittering stretch of great restaurants, bars, and carnival games on Crescent Lake, within walking distance of Epcot and Hollywood Studios. In addition to its pools, waterslide, and great gym, all of its large suites have washer-dryers and (in most units) full kitchens.

Best Western Airport Inn & Suites
8101 Aircenter Ct

Best Western Airport Inn & Suites is a two-pearl transit hotel located a seven-minute drive or free shuttle ride from Orlando International Airport. It offers 100 rooms in total, including Suite units, which add pull-out sofa beds. All rooms feature microwaves, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges. The free hot breakfast is served daily in a room just off from the lobby. Other amenities include a large outdoor pool (which is unfortunately not heated in the winter), a fitness center, and free Wi-Fi, plus a small business center in the lobby with free printing. While it's a convenient and well-maintained choice for travelers looking for lodging near the airport, those needing easy access to theme parks are better off staying somewhere closer to the tourist area, such as Clarion Inn & Suites near Universal Studios.

The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes

Midway between Universal Studios and Disney World, The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes is one of few five-pearl properties in Orlando. Its 582 rooms and suites are stylishly decorated and outfitted with luxe amenities, and the hotel is packed with great features. Families can take advantage of the gorgeous pool, outdoor kids' splash zone, and the Ritz Kids club, while couples and business travelers can check out the spa, modern fitness center, and 18-hole golf course. Four excellent dining options appeal to all kinds of travelers, and the adjoining JW Marriott’s amenities are free to use. The Ritz isn’t affiliated with any nearby theme parks, which may not be ideal for families. The Four Seasons Resort Orlando is located within Walt Disney World, and offers Disney related perks, but rates are pricier.
