Canada Drive Hotel and Suites
7400 Canada Ave

Formerly known as Quality Suites, the 154-room Canada Drive Hotel is a two-pearl hotel that's an easy drive from Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center as well as area theme parks. With free breakfast, an outdoor pool, game room, and free Wi-Fi, this hotel is well-suited to families traveling on a budget. Spacious rooms have separate living areas, but furniture and carpet show signs of age and wear. The nearby International Palms Resort is more modern, but it's hard to beat the price at the Canada Drive Hotel.

Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Orlando - International Drive

True to the Holiday Inn brand, the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Orlando is clean and predictable but lacks distinctiveness, especially when compared with the nearby Hilton Grand Vacations or Grande Villas Resort. The pool is small, and there's no poolside bar, but the expansive meeting and banquet space is a plus for business travelers (the hotel is within three miles of the Orange County Convention Center). Suites are large enough to accommodate families and groups, and the property is close to the area's fun parks and attractions: Universal Studios is across the street, and Disney World, SeaWorld, and Wet n’ Wild are within a 15-minute drive. The hotel has free shuttle service to Universal and Disney's Magic Kingdom, the main park at Walt Disney World.

Blue Heron Beach Resort
13428 Blue Heron Beach Drive

Blue Heron Beach Resort, with 280 spacious one- and two-bedroom suites, is a family getaway for budget-minded guests near Walt Disney World (you can see the nightly Disney fireworks show from balconies of some rooms). Located on Lake Bryan, the resort is also ideal for families that want to take a boating or fishing trip. Rooms and common area furnishings are outdated and in minor disrepair, but there are two large heated pools and a hot tub on-site. Some guests have complained about a timeshare pitch at check-in -- to avoid this there's always the nearby, but more expensive, Sheraton Vistana Resort Villas.

The Florida Hotel & Conference Center, BW Premier Collection
1500 Sand Lake Road

While so many of Orlando’s hotels are geared towards families, this upper-middle-range hotel caters to couples and business travelers with its sleek rooms, tranquil pool area, and modern meeting rooms and business services. Attached to the Florida Mall, the Florida Hotel can be a tad difficult to reach; but once past the traffic, guests find an modern hotel with lovely amenities such as a large 24-hour fitness center, a nice (and reasonably priced) restaurant, and an on-site Starbucks.

Westgate Palace Resort

When driving up to this timeshare property –- comprised of two nondescript high-rise buildings –- guests may not be too impressed, but this mid-range property has a lot more to offer than what first meets the eye. All units have an upscale, homey vibe and come equipped with modern, fully-stocked kitchens, bedrooms with spacious bathrooms, and up-to-date technology like large flat-screen TVs with DVD players. And the list of on-site activities is extensive; aside from the lovely pool area, the hotel features family-friendly amenities such as basketball, volleyball, and a game room. Pesky sales people can be a bother and there is a fee to use Wi-Fi, but the Westgate is nonetheless a solid choice for those planning longer Orlando stays.

Westgate Lakes Resort & Spa

This upper-middle-range property is a massive lakeside resort with lovely features including seven pools, a pretty spa, and several dining options. All condo-style units feature homey touches such as kitchenettes, modern technology, and warm decor, and guests can take their pick of everything from studios to four-bedroom villas. While freebies are plentiful, they come at the cost of a daily resort fee. Nonetheless, this resort is an excellent pick for families and business travelers -- but guests may consider comparing prices with the nearby Westgate Palace.

Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress

The Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress is a self-contained mega-resort situated on 1,500 acres of private grounds in the heart of Orlando's bustling theme park landscape. The 815 modern rooms have balconies overlooking the resort's pool area or Lake Buena Vista -- with views of the fireworks at Epcot and the Magic Kingdom included. Though the property is adjacent to Disney, you'll still need a car to reach it, as well as the other major theme parks, which are all within close driving distance. There are numerous activities here (from boating to biking), but the extra fees can be steep. Though the grounds cannot compare, the updated Marriott Orlando World CenterResort has cheaper rates for similar amenities in a comparable location.

Clarion Inn Lake Buena Vista

This mid-range property offers a solid value for families in town to visit Disney parks and area attractions such as Universal Studios and Sea World. Rooms here are a step above some similar properties; decor may be nothing special, but they are spacious and up-to-date with extras like flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, and microwaves (that are oddly nestled beside the bathroom sinks). There is no on-site fitness center. Nonetheless, families appreciate features such as a pool with a splash zone, a game room, and laundry facilities.

La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Orlando I Drive/Conv Ctr
8504 Universal Blvd

This budget-friendly chain hotel is located, as the name suggests, near the Orlando Convention Center. Rooms are fresh and modern after a 2012 renovation, and the hotel is a good fit for both convention-goers and families. Several extras add to the value: the free continental breakfast (hot items are limited, however); free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel; free parking; and a morning shuttle to Universal Studios. Some (but not all) rooms have microwaves and mini-fridges to help guests save costs on food. Guests traveling with pets will appreciate the hotel's pet-friendly policies. Just note that some guests still complain about maintenance and minor cleanliness issues.

Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando

This budget-friendly property attracts both business and leisure travelers with its low rates and long list of freebies. Rooms are simple, with IKEA-like furniture, but all come with nice additions such as microwaves, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. Those who require a fitness center should look elsewhere, but there are three on-site pools and overall this hotel offers a solid value -- if nothing particularly special.
