VIP Executive Arts Hotel

The VIP Executive Art’s is a so-so pick for a short stay if you’re on a budget. It is located in Campo das Nacoes, the former site of Expo '98 (the Libson World Exposition). While it is not central, this locale is convenient for those who need to be near the airport or who don’t mind taking the metro to get to the city center. Rooms are basic but pleasant, with wood floors, cream headboards, and coral bedding and curtains; most have flat-screen TVs, but some old tube TVs still linger. The hotel caters to business travelers, and has several meeting rooms that can host conferences (including a large auditorium-style option), as well as a tiny business center, but there’s no Wi-Fi in the rooms, and wired Internet is slow. In short, it’s an adequate option, but it’s worth comparing prices at nearby hotels.

HF Fenix Urban

The 148-room HF Fenix Urban is a nice mid-range property in a quiet location a block from the Parque metro stop. The clean, modern rooms feel Ikea-esque (think: blonde wood, plush beds with crisp white duvets, white walls), and feature flat-screen TVs and stocked minibars. There’s little in the way if amenities, and the bar and restaurant are nothing special, but the hotel does offer free Wi-Fi and discounted passes to a nearby local gym. This is a good value pick for both business travelers and families -- some rooms feature bunk beds, sofa beds, and microwaves.

Real Residência - Apartamentos Turísticos

The value Real Residencias offers 24 apartment-style suites in a somewhat removed location near Eduardo VII Park. The hotel is within walking distance of the park and a museum, but it's otherwise at least a 10-minute subway ride from Lisbon's main attractions. However, the two Studios and 22 one-bedroom Apartments are large, with separate living rooms and large kitchenettes equipped with cooking utensils, stovetops, microwaves, full refrigerators, and toasters. Decor is traditional and simple, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. Unfortunately, very few amenities are on-site aside from its restaurant, but guests get access to the health club facilities at the nearby Real Palacio. Travelers wanting a more central location and traditional hotel might prefer the similarly priced Turim Av Liberdade Hotel.

A Casa das Janelas com Vista
Rua Nova do Loureiro 35, Bairro Alto

This 12-room, upper-middle-range Barrio Alto boutique is a family-owned spot ideal for travelers who are looking for a little bite of Lisbon's bohemian side. This colorful guest house features a blend of modern and industrial decor, free Wi-Fi, in-room TVs on request, and a communal breakfast table. Rooms are bright and comfortable, each with sleek bathrooms. While this is not a full-service hotel (no gym or restaurant), visitors can expect a free, homemade breakfast buffet, bar service in the living room lounge, nibbles of banana bread and sips of coffee or tea, and concierge service. Travelers looking for a full restaurant and bar on-site should check out the nearby Independente Hostel and Suites, though a bit less charming.

Yes! Lisbon Hostel
Rua de Sao Juliao 148

The two-pearl Yes! Lisbon has a prime location in the city’s historic center, near the River Tagus and close to attractions, trams, and busses. The friendly staff, clean facilities, and organized activities -- including free walking tours and cheap nightly dinners with an open bar -- make this hostel a good value for budget-minded single travelers or groups. Dorm rooms have bunk beds with privacy curtains, lockers, and individual lamps, though the rooms could be brighter, and those facing the street can get some outside noise. Rates include daily breakfast, and Wi-Fi, and the hostel organizes free walking tours. By comparison, Travellers House hostel has more room options, but Yes! Lisbon has larger bathrooms.

Lisbon Marriott Hotel
Avenida dos Combatentes 45

Lisbon Marriott Hotel is an upper-middle-range chain property in the financial district and close to the zoo, but far from Lisbon's city center -- and the nearest metro station is a 15-minute walk away. With 16 meeting rooms, it’s frequented mostly by business travelers -- though note that in-room Wi-Fi costs a fee. On-site amenities are aplenty, including a restaurant and tapas bar, a lovely outdoor pool, and a bright and airy fitness center equipped with modern machines, plus a handful of shops are on-site. The 577 guest rooms are clean, though slightly dated, and equipped with flat-screen TVs and balconies. As an alternative, VIP Executive Marques Aparthotel is closer to the city center and offers free Wi-Fi throughout, but decor is dated and it lacks a fitness center.

Portugal Boutique Hotel

The 53-room Hotel Portugal is a stylish boutique located a block from historic Rossio Square and within walking distance of most major attractions. Rooms are stylish and contemporary, with a chic white and blue color scheme, sleek bathrooms, and upscale amenities such as espresso machines, TVs built into mirrors, pillow menus, and Rituals toiletries. A breakfast room is all there is in the way of amenities, but freebies such as parking, Wi-Fi, and breakfast are great perks. Also, the hotel offers access to adjacent Hotel Mundial’s facilities, including two restaurants and a popular rooftop bar with stunning city views.

PortoBay Marques
Rua Duque de Palmela 32

The 72-room PortoBay Marques is an upper-middle-range hotel on a quiet street near Lisbon's business district and a two-minute walk to the Marques de Pombal Metro station. Luxury shopping on Avenida da Liberdade is also nearby, and it's a 10-minute drive or metro trip to the city's historic neighborhoods. Rooms are modern and attractive, and include flat-screen TVs, minibars, and electric kettles. Suites feature kitchenettes and balconies with nice city views. The restaurant serves all meals, including a well-liked breakfast, and there's a bar in the lobby. A fitness room is fine for a basic workout, and the rooftop pool and bar are a bonus, but the latter close early.  Alternatively, the nearby Marques De Pombal Hotel has sharp modern style and a spa, though rates will be higher.

Britania Hotel, a Lisbon Heritage Collection
Rua Rodrigues Sampaio 17

Hotel Britania has a loyal set of customers who return year after year. Its location on a tree-lined street just off of bustling Avenida de Liberdade is convenient, but removed from the loud noise of the city. It's a boutique, with only 32 rooms, and it lacks the amenities of a larger property -- there is no fitness center, spa, or full restaurant. However, the hotel does offer a breakfast buffet as well as 24-hour room service, and guests can grab a drink at the wood-paneled bar. Built in the 1940s, the hotel maintains the Art Deco look: The lobby is outfitted with marble columns and impressive chandeliers, and the spacious rooms have dark woods, silver accents, funky light fixtures, and marble bathrooms.

9 Hotel Mercy
Rua da Misericordia 76

The 47-room 9HOTEL MERCY is a chic luxury boutique with bold decor located in a convenient location in the city center, between the lively Bairro Alto and Chiado. Opened in 2012, this modern property attracts guests with its design and style, such as in the posh lounge area. Rooms are as stylish as the common spaces, with tufted headboards, stocked minibars, and sleek bathrooms; some have terraces and big soaking tubs. The staff earns good guest reviews and there is a quality breakfast available (for a fee), but no formal restaurant. Guests may want to compare rates with Lisboa Carmo Hotel, a modern, upscale hotel with a tapas restaurant with an outdoor dining area in a cobblestone square.
