The Late Birds Lisbon - Gay Urban Resort
Travessa André Valente, 21-21A, Bairro Alto

For men -- particularly gay men -- The Late Birds Lisbon, is a sharp choice. This upscale guest house is a three-minute walk to the center of Bairro Alto, and has just 15 rooms and suites. All are done in a minimalistic, modern style, with excellent beds, iMac computers, and plenty of quiet. Things aren't completely tame here, though, and features include a clothing-optional plunge pool and a lively bar. Interiors have a bespoke, artsy style and the home-like atmosphere draws plenty of repeat guests. Add free Wi-Fi, a free all-day breakfast, and extensive app for local recommendations, and the hotel is hard to top. There's nothing else like it in Lisbon, and non-male or heterosexual couples wanting a stylish boutique option might consider the Internacional Design Hotel instead.

Hotel Jorge V
Rua Mouzinho da Silveira 3

In terms of location, Hotel Jorge V doesn’t do too bad as it is quite close to Avenida da Liberdad, Rossio Square, and Marques de Pombal, plus it's well serviced by public transportation. Unfortunately, the location is all this budget hotel has going for it. Its 49 rooms are spacious and have flat-screen TVs and minibars, but they’re dated and show signs of wear. Facilities are few -- a public computer, small bar, and a basic breakfast (that can be included in room rates) served in a small, overcrowded dining room. There is no gym nor restaurant on-site. The nearby Inspira Santa Marta Hotel is a better option, with modern decor, plus multiple on-site amenities like a spa, bar, restaurant, and a small gym.

Lisbon Destination Hostel
Largo do Duque de Cadaval 17 Rossio Train Station

The Lisbon Destination Hostel is a budget property with an exceptional location inside the beautiful Rossio Train Station, right in the middle of Lisbon's historic city center. This social hostel features a spacious and funky skylit lounge, a movie room, a large community kitchen, and a dining area. The 20 modern private and dorm-style rooms have either shared or en-suite bathrooms. Dorms feature privacy curtains, reading lights, and private lockers. The hostel offers a free pancake breakfast, free coffee and tea all day, and organized social events. Travelers might also consider the Sunset Destination Hostel, a sister property with custom-designed bunks and a rooftop terrace with a pool -- it's not quite as centrally located, but it's on the waterfront.

Inspira Santa Marta Hotel
R. de Santa Marta, 48

The 89-room Inspira is a four-pearl boutique property situated just off of lively Avenida da Liberdade. The sleek, modern hotel design includes elements of Feng Shui; the common areas of the hotel, including the lobby and bar, have an open feel, and the rooms and suites are themed after the five traditional Chinese elements. There's a lovely restaurant that can cater to vegan and gluten-free diets, and the hotel offers three well-equipped meeting spaces, a gorgeous spa with all sorts of treatments, and a tiny fitness center that just gets the job done with a limited selection and lack of free weights. Travelers may also want to consider the Hotel Florida, which has a similar vibe (but an equally unimpressive gym).

Lisbon Story Guesthouse
Largo de Sao Domingos 18

Lisbon Story Guesthouse is a decent two-pearl hotel in a great location in central Lisbon, near shopping and dining, and a two-minute walk from Rossio Square. The hotel serves a free, high-quality continental breakfast buffet, and also has a communal kitchen. A small outdoor terrace and a guest lounge for reading, music, and relaxing give it a low-key communal vibe. The 11 rooms are simple, but pleasant, and many have shared bathrooms. Additionally, rooms can be small, and none have air-conditioning or TVs. Guests have also noted that noise can be an issue. Those who'd prefer an even more budget-friendly option in the middle of Baixa-Chiado may want to consider Travellers House, which has a mix of dorms, private rooms, and apartments, all of which are air-conditioned.

SANA Executive Hotel
Avenida Conde de Valbom 56

SANA Executive is a two-and-a-half-pearl hotel north-central Lisbon, a five-minute walk from the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and near the El Corte Ingles mall. Staying here means a 25-minute metro ride to central Lisbon's historic districts, but rates in this area are a bit cheaper than those downtown. The SANA has a lobby bar and serves a hot-and-cold breakfast buffet (for a fee), but there are no other major facilities. The 72 rooms are done in a modern style with Art Deco touches that verge on dated, and all come with minibars, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. Alternatively, the hotel's nearby sister property, the SANA Reno, has a rooftop pool, sauna, and steam room, and it's closer to the metro.

Sheraton Lisboa Hotel & Spa

The 369-room Sheraton Lisboa is an upscale chain hotel just outside the city center, near two metro lines and the airport bus stop. Elegant rooms are fairly spacious and modern, with stylish furnishings, Bang & Olufsen flat-screen TVs, and signature mattresses. Sleek bathrooms have glass walls, and while they do have blinds, guests complain about lack of privacy. The property boasts wonderful dining options (both casual and formal), stunning city views, a full-service business center, and an upscale spa. But guests may feel nickel-and-dimed due to pesky fees for everything from Wi-Fi to pool access.

Hotel Real Parque

The 153-room Hotel Real Parque is a mid-range hotel a bit outside of the bustling center of Lisbon -- but still within walking distance of several sights, as well as the metro station. There is nothing special about the rooms here; they are spacious, and some have large balconies with sweeping views of the city, but the decor is dated (picture old tube TVs, hard beds with floral runners, and tired, striped curtains). And the hotel doesn't offer much in the way of on-site amenities, aside from the dining options: There is a nice restaurant, as well as a bar, attractive coffee shop with an extensive menu, and a convenience mart with magazines and cigarettes. The hotel also offers 24-hour room service and free breakfast. Rates are cheap, but guests may consider comparing prices with the nearby sister hotel, Hotel Real Palacio, which has a bit more charm, as well as its own health club.

VIP Executive Éden Aparthotel
Praca dos Restauradores 24

The 134-room VIP Executive Eden Aparthotel is a contemporary three-pearl option that has been cleverly built behind the facade of a vintage Art Deco theater. Its enviable downtown location -- beside a major metro station and within walking distance of Lisbon’s premiere sights -- is one main draw. The other is the Eden's stunning rooftop pool, a rare find among mid-range hotels here. The actual accommodations, however, are disappointing. Studio rooms and one-bedroom apartments are reasonably priced and all have functional kitchenettes, but their dated decor is decidedly bland. Style-conscious travelers who want more up-to-date rooms for the price may want to consider the Holiday Inn Express Lisbon - Av. Liberdade, a three-pearl competitor, instead.

VIP Executive Entrecampos Hotel & Conference

The 171-room VIP Executive is a mid-range hotel outside of Lisbon's city center. Though tourists may not love the location -- unless they are visiting the nearby bull ring -- the hotel attracts business travelers who are working in the area and want close proximity to the airport. The hotel has numerous amenities: an indoor pool, a fitness center, a small business center, and two restaurants, as well as a coffee shop that is often bustling in the mornings. Rooms are clean but bland; they feature blonde wood, IKEA-like furniture, and tube TVs. Its extensive list of features still makes it a solid choice, but it's worth comparing rates with the Villa Rica's more upscale sister hotel, the VIP Grand Lisboa, which offers more contemporary rooms and a small spa.
