Amazonia Lisboa Hotel
Travessa Fabrica dos Pentes 12 20

The Amazonia Lisboa Hotel is located in a quiet, central neighborhood, near a metro station and some local dining. For the price, the two-and-a-half-pearl hotel has some of the best views over the city of Lisbon, but that's only from some units on upper floors. Overall, the 192 guest rooms are dated, and many face an unappealing courtyard. They all come with free Wi-Fi, but there are old, tube-style TVs and not all have mini-fridges. The tiny outdoor pool is a rarity in the city, but it's only open seasonally and the surrounding sundeck is in disrepair. There's an Amazon-themed lobby bar and breakfast is served for an extra fee. Travelers looking for a step up can check out the four-pearl Skyna Hotel Lisboa.

The 7 Hotel
Rua Aurea 133 143

The 7 Hotel is a modern two-and-a-half-pearl boutique hotel that opened in 2015 in downtown Lisbon. It’s a 17-minute walk to Sao Jorge Castle, around the corner from a metro, and surrounded by attractions and restaurants. The 37 rooms are contemporary, but may be small for some tastes, and come with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and electric kettles. Some rooms have kitchenettes. There’s not much to do on-site here, apart from enjoying the hot breakfast (for a fee), free Wi-Fi, 24-hour reception, and nearby public parking. Travelers may also want to consider the nearby My Story Hotel Ouro which has an on-site Portuguese restaurant.

Ramada by Wyndham Lisbon

The Altis Park Hotel is one of the more disappointing options in the Altis chain. Though the hotel is a good pick for business travelers -- it has 11 meeting rooms, a large auditorium, and is a short drive from the airport -- it has bland decor and is isolated from major attractions. Small rooms are dated with graphic carpets and plain bathrooms. Rooms do feature small flat-screen TVs, but Wi-Fi will cost extra. The hotel has a restaurant and bar with live music six days a week, and though the hotel does not have a fitness center, it does offer discounted rates at a health club nearby with tennis courts, two pools, and a gym. The sister property, Altis Hotel, has a more central location as well as on-site amenities such as a pool and fitness center.

Hotel A. S. Lisboa
Avenida Almirante Reis 188

The 75-room Hotel AS Lisboa is a mid-range property with a quiet location in the northern area of the city, just a one-minute walk from two metro lines. Though elements of its old, dated decor still shine through, the hotel's much-needed refurbishment in 2010 brought brighter decor and modern furniture to all areas. Expect spotless rooms with beautiful tower-top views, satellite TVs, minibars, and clean bathrooms. There's no full restaurant or gym, but there are a decent free breakfast buffet and access to a 24-hour honor bar. Babysitting services, a business center, and meeting rooms are also available. Nearby Turim Alameda Hotel has a much lower price point (plus a bonafide restaurant and bar), though is still has dated decor.

Eurostars Lisboa Parque
Rua Largo de Andaluz 13B

The upper-middle-range, 83-room Lisboa Parque Hotel is part of the Eurostars family (a Spanish chain with 90 urban locations), and, in keeping with brand standards, it provides contemporary comfort at a reasonable cost. Located near Marquês de Pombal Square, two metro stops from Lisbon's tourist center, the hotel was built in 2003 and refurbished a decade later. As a result, its on-site features -- like the sleek restaurant and small fitness center -- are up to date. Ditto for its spacious guest rooms: the downside is that these offer few extras in terms of either decor or equipment. The minimalist look, for instance, is a bit bland, and some welcome perks (like in-room coffeemakers) are missing. Visitors looking for a more fashionable, hi-tech alternative should consider heading a little farther north to the four-pearl EVOLUTION Lisboa Hotel.

Internacional Design Hotel

The upper-middle-range Internacional Design Hotel is a stylish, trendy boutique right on Rossio Square. Its 55 rooms are divided into four different categories -- Zen, Urban, Pop, Tribe -- all with distinct decor styles and vibes, but with the same modern amenities, including Nespresso coffeemakers, Sony flat-screen TVs, Ritual toiletries, and rainfall showerheads. But rooms, especially entry-level rooms, are tiny. The hotel lacks wellness facilities and a proper lounge, but it has a solid restaurant with a wine and cocktail bar, plus a nice breakfast buffet. Features aside, what really sets this property apart is its splashy decor and central location. For a more refined take on a design-conscious boutique, The Beautique Hotels Figueira is right down the street and adds a fitness area and spa.

Lisbon Dreams Guest House
Rua Rodrigo da Fonseca 29

The Lisbon Dreams Guest House is a small, two-and-a-half-pearl option that's a good value for travelers looking for something cozy and communal. The hotel has some great amenities for its size, like plenty of common space -- including an outdoor terrace and kitchen -- as well as comfort-enhancing in-room details like robes and slippers for all guests. The 18 rooms are clean and colorful, and all but one share hallway bathrooms. Most of Lisbon’s top sights are about 20 minutes away on the metro, which is a five-minute walk from the hotel. Both internal and external noise can be an issue, so guests looking for more peace and private bathrooms might check out The House, which is a bit more removed from the city center.

Hotel Real Palacio

The 147-room Hotel Real Palacio feels like two separate hotels. Though all guests can enjoy the elegant lobby, which features antique furniture, classic artwork, and lots of natural sunlight from the windows framed with floral curtains, only 12 guests can stay in the Palace rooms, housed in the 17th-century palace. These rooms, though not ultra-luxurious, are decorated in a Rococo style reminiscent of when the palace was built; they feature canopied beds and rich curtains in pastel colors. But all other guests stay in rooms in the main building, which lack the historic look and feel. Instead, they have blonde, IKEA-like furniture and beds accented with striped red runners. All guests have access to the hotel's many amenities, which include two restaurants (one with a free breakfast buffet) and a health club outfitted with a fitness room, a Turkish bath, a Jacuzzi, a sauna, and one treatment room (which offers limited spa services). But the location is somewhat removed from the action.

Occidental Lisboa
Rua Artilharia 1 112

The 105-room Skyna Hotel Lisboa is a three-and-a-half-pearl hotel located in a quiet area between Parque Eduardo VII and the Amoreiras shopping center. It's a bit removed from the city center and its attractions, but the metro is nearby for getting around Lisbon. Rooms are modern and bright, and come equipped with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Upgraded rooms add kettles or coffeemakers, and some rooms have furnished balconies. There's also a Mediterranean restaurant, plus two bars -- one in the lobby and one on the rooftop. While the hotel has a small fitness center, there is no indoor pool or spa. Travelers who'd like to be closer to Lisbon's sights without spending more money could check out the VIP Executive Eden Aparthotel, which also adds a pool.

Hotel Alif Avenidas

The Alif Avenidas (formerly the Dom Manuel I Hotel) is a modern business hotel located across the street from Sao Sebastiao metro stop. It was completely renovated in late 2010, and it now features 64 decent-sized rooms (by Lisbon standards) with flat-screen TVs, comfortable beds, and empty mini-fridges. Decor is contemporary, and some rooms feature bright red accent walls -- but there’s a fee for Wi-Fi. The restaurant and bar are mediocre at best, but the breakfast buffet (not included in the standard rate) is decent, and there’s a small business center with two computers and a printer. In short, it’s a good pick for business travelers, but it’s worth comparing rates at nearby hotels before booking.
