Khum Phaya Resort & Spa, Centara Boutique Collection
137 Moo 5, Chiang Mai-Lampang Road, Nongpaklang

This lovely property, a city escape just outside of town, is set on landscaped grounds and gardens that include hundred-year-old trees. While the upscale hotel is located in a rather unappealing industrial-like area off the ring road and not within walking distance of central Chiang Mai, it is quiet, and once inside the gates, a world of its own. The spacious rooms are decked out in northern Thai Lanna style, have plenty of amenities, and have private balconies and terraces. The elongated pool here runs through the entire grounds, and the good restaurant and several atmospheric bars, along with a pampering spa, help make up for the lack of places to go in the neighborhood. The hotel also runs a free shuttle to the Night Bazaar and downtown.

Rimping Village
13/1 Soi 2, Chiangmai-Lamphun Rd.,, Watgate, Muang

Rimping Village is a small resort outside of the city center across the Ping River. It is quiet and intimate, with only 34 rooms, and staff were attentive during our visit. While the resort does not have facilities like a fitness center or spa, it does have a decent-sized pool out on a sunny terrace, and its restaurant sits in a leafy garden that's home to a century-old banyan tree and other tropical foliage. Big, attractive rooms have terra-cotta tile and dark wood furniture. Bicycles are available for guests to use, making the city center less than a 10-minute ride away.

Yaang Come Village
90/3 Sridonchai Rd, Changkhlan

The Yaang Come Village is a smallish boutique resort, featuring traditional Lan Na-style architecture and design. The upper-middle-range hotel features some of the most spacious rooms in Chiang Mai, and the higher-category rooms are beautifully furnished, with huge bathrooms and tubs, but all lack views. A pleasant, sunny swimming pool sits in the middle of the grounds and there's a small library adjacent to the resort's atmospheric restaurant. It's only a five- to 10-minute walk to the Night Market and the city center, yet the hotel feels quiet and secluded. It's a good choice for those wanting a peaceful and comfortable spot close to the city center, although it is quite pricey compared to similarly rated hotels in the area.

Anantara Chiang Mai Resort
123 Charoen Prathet Road, Changklan

The Anantara Chiang Mai Resort & Spa is an 84-room boutique resort located right on the Ping River and just minutes on foot from downtown Chiang Mai. This luxury property has some of the most elegant rooms and suites in Chiang Mai, all with private terraces, wood floors, rain showers, and freestanding bathtubs -- plus free breakfast and Wi-Fi. Features include a riverside swimming pool, spacious gym, and spa with private treatment rooms. Stylish lounges complement the tranquil grounds, while the restaurant serves Thai and Indian cuisine. However, there can be some street noise at night. This is one of Chiang Mai's most refined stays, and as such is one of the priciest properties here; the splurge is generally worthwhile, but guests seeking a less expensive, more remote stay could try Siripanna Villa Resort & Spa, which has its own rice field.

BanThai Village
Tapae Soi 3, Tapae Road, T. Changklang, A. Muang, 19 Changklan, Mueang

The 23-room BanThai Village is a boutique resort nestled into a narrow lane just near the entrance to Chiang Mai's historical Old City. The hotel is within easy walking distance of both the Night Bazaar and downtown on one side, and the Thapae Gate entrance to the moat and old town on the other. Rooms here are on the small side, but are tastefully styled with Lanna Thai design, handmade cushions, interesting art, and wood floors in the suites and around the building. All rooms have stocked minibars, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and stylish bathrooms. The hotel has two swimming pools, one small, and one very small, and a pleasant bar/restaurant overlooking the pool. Compared to what's around it, the hotel is a good choice for a boutique and charming spot in a quiet location, still close to all the action.

Dusit Princess Chiang Mai

The Royal Princess Chiang Mai is a very large hotel located in the heart of downtown Chiang Mai, right near the Night Bazaar and Anusarn Market. It has almost 200 rooms, all of which feature flat-screen TVs, safes, electric hot water kettles, and free breakfast and Wi-Fi. The hotel has large conference facilities, a decent-sized swimming pool, a small gym, and a good Chinese/Thai restaurant that features dim sum lunch buffets. The hotel is popular with business travelers for its convenient location and facilities, and has comparable rates to the nearby competition. However, some rooms are small and the area sees a lot of traffic.

Sakorn Residence & Hotel
2 / 2 Na Wat Kate Rd. Soi 1, T. Wat Kate

The Sakorn Residence is a pleasant mid-range hotel located in a quiet area on the east side of the Ping River, about a 20-minute walk from downtown. The rooms here are simple but spacious, and are outfitted with amenities suited to long-term guests, including kitchenettes with large refrigerators in some. The hotel has an outdoor swimming pool and gym, as well as a cozy restaurant and colorful little coffee shop. Overall, it's a great value, certainly cheaper than many of the competing properties and breakfast is free.

Awanahouse
7 Ratchadamnoen Road, Lane 1 Thapae Gate

The Awanahouse is a small guesthouse in a quiet alley just inside the walls of the Old City. Its 16 air-conditioned rooms are tiny and basic, but all come with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, and tiny balconies. Although the guesthouse is small, it manages to fit in a little covered swimming pool, a restaurant, a massage room, and a rooftop terrace hangout area. The plain rooms aren't going to win any fashion awards, but this the guesthouse offers good value in a quiet and convenient location.

Baan Klang Wiang

Baan Klang Wiang is a charming, colonial-style boutique set in the heart of Chiang Mai's historic old town, about a 10- to 15-minute drive from the airport. Hidden down a quiet alley, the tiny retreat has only ten rooms, all of them spacious and furnished with elegant Lanna Thai decor, four-poster canopy beds, sofas, desks, polished wooden floors, and plenty of amenities like multi-disc DVD, CD, iPod players, large flat screen TVs, and bathrobes and slippers. The resort has just a small swimming pool and a pleasant set of tables in the garden where guests can order breakfast, but there are plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops nearby for all necessities. The resort is perfect for those looking for an intimate and private getaway in the heart of the city with plenty of peace and quiet, and the rates are competitive -- certainly not cheap, but pretty much on par with the surrounding competition.

99 The Gallery Hotel

99 The Gallery Hotel is mid-range property with 53 rooms set in the heart of the historic old town. The property, which has an artsy vibe resembling a gallery, is right around the corner from Wat Pra Singh temple and many attractions. The rooms here are pretty small, but do have free Wi-Fi and inclusive breakfast, and are decorated with contemporary Lanna Thai decor. This is a small property, so besides the rooms there are just a small swimming pool, terrace, and restaurant serving only breakfast. However, there are plenty of restaurants and shops in the neighborhood, and compared to similar properties, the price is lower than most, making this a good choice for an old city stay.
