15/2 soi 3 Kotchasarn Rd, Chang Klan

Situated between the Old City and Night Bazaar, the mid-range Kate and Hasu Boutique Chiangmai is a small, family-owned boutique hotel with stylish, minimalist modern decor in fresh white. The lobby features comfy hangout spots and doubles as a breakfast area where a simple but free made-to-order breakfast is served daily. There’s a tiny gym, a narrow lap pool, and a simple rooftop hangout space, but no full-service restaurant or bar. The hotel’s 20 guest rooms are clean and stylish with amenities like slippers and mini-fridges stocked with free water and soda. That said, rooms are all the same size, and that size is snug, especially in the bathrooms. Guests on the market for more spacious rooms might consider the nearby Viang Thapae Resort, which also has a restaurant.

X2 Chiang Mai Riverside Resort
369/1, Charoen Rat Road, Wat Ket

Located on the Ping River, the pristine and modern X2 Chiang Mai Riverside Resort appeals to couples and business travelers searching for an upscale hideaway outside of town. This contemporary, design-focused boutique resort (built from the ground up in 2017) consists of 30 rooms and suites, each equipped with solid tech and luxe amenities, like 4K Smart TVs, wireless Bluetooth speakers, loaner Smartphones for local use, bathrobes, and C.O. Bigelow toiletries. Twenty-eight of the 30 rooms face the river, and two units have private pools. Hotel features are on par with the rooms; they include a rooftop infinity pool and fitness center, a restaurant helmed by a Michelin-starred chef, and a beautiful spa. The location is outside of old town, but a free shuttle goes there three times a day. Those who want to be in the center of the action could consider Sirilanna Hotel

InterContinental Chiang Mai Mae Ping
153 Sridonchai Road, Chang Klan

The mid-range InterContinental Chiang Mai Mae Ping is one Chiang Mai's largest hotels, located in an imposing grand building that sits on a quiet street in the heart of downtown. It offers good value in this part of town, and has plenty of features on the premises, including Japanese and Chinese restaurants, two swimming pools, and large conference and meeting facilities. The rooms here, however, are not overly special; they are small and some are a bit dated, as this is one of the city's older hotels. You'll get the basics here, such as free Wi-Fi and free coffee/tea making facilities, and can sprawl out at the pool in a good location, but if you want something a bit more characterful and modern, you'd be best to try elsewhere.

B2 Ayatana Premier Hotel & Resort
99/9 Moo 14 Suthep Road, Suthep, Muang

B2 Ayatana Premier Hotel & Resort is a 36-room two-and-a-half-pearl hotel located a 15-minute drive from Chiang Mai's old city, our near the university. Rooms here have glazed concrete floors, painted murals on the walls, and northern Thai Lanna details -- it's a look that combines urban aesthetics with more rustic elements, though details like tube TVs date everything. The hotel has a swimming pool, a small restaurant, and a tiny bar, but it's a long walk to find shops or food, and much of the property has seen better days, with aged wood, cracked decks, and a rather run-down feel. Travelers wanting funkier, more eclectic digs in a far trendier part of town should consider At Pingnakorn Hotel Chiang Mai, which has similar rates just of Nimmanhaemin Road.

BED Nimman
20 Sirimangkalajarn Road

This three-pearl, 56-room boutique hotel is located in the trendy Nimmanhaemin Road area of Chiang Mai, around a five-minute drive from the historic Old City. It's sleek and modern, with minimalist decor throughout, and a casual vibe that attracts groups and young travelers. Air-conditioned rooms are modern, yet cozy and practical, equipped with furnished balconies and free Wi-Fi. The pool is a big bonus, surrounded by sun loungers and tropical greenery. There's no full restaurant, but a free breakfast buffet with generous hot and cold options is served daily. Guests can also help themselves to free tea, coffee, bottled water, and fruit from stations on every floor. Keep in mind that no one under 18 is allowed. Families might want to consider the Lanna Hotel instead, which adds a full-service restaurant.

Shangri-La Hotel, Chiang Mai
89/8 Chang Klan Road

The Shangri-La Chiang Mai lives up to the standards of the Shangri-La luxury brand. It has a massive footprint for a downtown property, allowing for lots of luxury features, including the largest swimming pool in the city, a spacious health club, renowned spa, and plenty of dining and drinking options, from an elegant Chinese restaurant to a casual cafe. The spacious, elegant rooms have large soaking tubs and terrific city and mountain views. The location is slightly out of the noisy tourist zone, within walking distance to the Night Bazaar but a long walk to the old city; those who'd prefer to be a bit closer to the city gates might want to consider the slightly pricier Le Meridien, but note that the rooms and grounds here are bigger.

Chiang Mai Plaza Hotel
92 Sridonchai Road, Chang Khlan

The 450-room Chiang Mai Plaza Hotel is a three-pearl option on Sridonchai Road, about a 10-minute walk from the night market. While this isn't the touristy heart of the city, there are still a number of dining options all around. Spacious rooms feature dated Thai decor, and come with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and minibars. Some have nice views of the city. A free breakfast buffet is served daily in the restaurant and consists of hot and cold Asian and Western selections. There's also a bar in the lobby and one by the large outdoor pool. Other pluses include a spa, fitness center, and meeting space. Travelers who would prefer a more modern option with similar rates could check out the Nordwind Hotel, although it doesn't have a pool, spa, or fitness center.

Ping Nakara Boutique Hotel & Spa
135/9 Charoenprathet Road, Changklan

The Ping Nakara Boutique Hotel is a charming, intimate in-town resort, housed in an exquisitely designed northern Thai and colonial-style home. The 19 stunning rooms have period furniture and balconies, and property features include a small pool, spa, and restaurant (breakfast is free). The gorgeous building occupies a space near the Ping River, well out of the tourist noise and chaos of the central city, but it's only a 15-minute stroll to the Night Bazaar downtown; guests can take trips around the city in the hotel's classic Mercedes.

137 Pillars House Chiang Mai
2 Soi 1, Na Wat Gate Road, Wat Gate, Muang

Near Chiang Mai's Old City, 137 Pillars House is a luxury boutique with 30 private and impressive villas. Separated by cobblestone paths and small lily ponds, teak-accented suites come with private verandas and silk-draped daybeds, plus some have private plunge pools. Also standard are clawfoot roll-top bathtubs, outdoor showers, and personal butlers. Colonial themes feature throughout, including dark-wood paneling, carved ceilings, and seating areas with curtain-enclosed sofas. Two restaurants alongside a bar and relaxed lounge serve homegrown foods and the Lawn offers everything from yoga to traditional dancing. Guests can sunbathe by the pool with a stunning ivy backdrop or book a massage at the spa. Be aware that past guests have complained of mosquitos, as well as noise issues. For a downtown location that's lighter on the wallet, consider Le Meridien Chiang Mai.

Kantary Hills, Chiang Mai
44, 44/1-4, Nimmanhaemin Road, Soi 12, Suthep

The Kantary Hills is a member of the boutique Kantary Collection of Hotels and Residences, and this branch delivers on brand expectations as well as the others. It's located in the uber-trendy and happening Nimmanheiminda Road area of Chiang Mai, and the streets here are lined with fashionable cafes and popular dining and drinking spots. The kitchenette-equipped rooms here are extremely large, more suitable to apartment living, as the hotel is also a long-term residence resort. They are contemporary and far bigger than anything found downtown for this price. While the facilities are excellent, you do sacrifice tourist location by staying here. The old city is not within walking distance and the traffic in this part of town is the worst in Chiang Mai.
