Huarn Jana Boutique Resort
333 Moo 11 T.Namphrae

Huarn Jana Boutique Resort -- sometimes called Fondcome Resort -- is a quirky two-pearl hotel on the Samoeng Loop, a mountain road outside of Chiang Mai. The 50 rooms range from grotto-like Superior Rooms to more conventional rooms, and Deluxe Rooms have creek views and feature northern Thai Lanna decor. Unfortunately, most of the resort is not in good shape, and there is plenty of wear and datedness issues throughout. It's at least a 25-minute drive from the sights in central Chiang Mai, and far more pleasant digs can be had right in the old city at lower rates -- check out the Raming Lodge Hotel & Spa as an alternative, which also has a pool.

De Chai Colonial Hotel & Spa

De Chai The Colonial is an upper-middle-range boutique hotel located in a narrow lane between downtown Chiang Mai and the historic old city area. The 40 rooms here feature sharp contemporary decor in soothing tones, and include attractive canopy beds, iPod docks, and DVD players. Wi-Fi and snacks are included in the room rates, as is breakfast (though options are a bit simple). The hotel has a tiny covered swimming pool, a small spa, and one restaurant that serves both Thai and Western cuisine. While the rooms are bigger than some of the other nearby boutique options, they aren't nearly as charming as Thannatee Boutique, nor are the facilities as pleasant, so be sure to compare prices.

Ban Sabai Village Resort & Spa
219 Moo 9, San Pee Sua subdistrict

Ban Sabai Spa Village is a small three-pearl boutique resort located near the Ping River about 30 minutes outside of central Chiang Mai. It's a relaxing vacation destination in its own right as it has a comprehensive spa for detox treatments, a romantic restaurant, and a garden swimming pool. Twenty rooms here range from newer Jacuzzi Suites that have in-room whirlpools, to elegant Thai villas that feature wood floors and furnishings along with their own private steam room and sauna. The resort has free bicycles to explore the area and offers yoga classes. The major downside is the isolated location. Prices are similar to nearby spa resort competitors like RarinJindra Wellness, but Ban Sabai is far more intimate and has a wider selection of rooms.

Oasis Baan Saen Doi Spa Resort
199/135 Moo 3, Mae Hia

Oasis Baan Saen Doi Spa Resort is a three-and-a-half-pearl boutique property located in a gated community, about a 20-minute drive from Chiang Mai's old city. Its 11 rooms are spacious and done in elegant traditional materials, with polished wood floors, teak and rattan furnishings, and touches of northern Thai style. The more luxurious rooms share a large private swimming pool and have whirlpool tubs, and the hotel's spa gets high marks. The community clubhouse across the road provides a giant outdoor pool, kids' pool, tennis courts, and a terrace restaurant overlooking the owner's organic rice field, but it's open to non-hotel guests. There's not much within walking distance, however, and travelers seeking something right in the old city should investigate four-pearl Bodhi Serene Hotel, which has traditional charm and lower rates.

De Lanna Hotel

The three-pearl, 62-room De Lanna Hotel is conveniently located in the center of Chiang Mai's Old City, just a five-minute walk from the famous Sunday Night Market and near Wat Phra Singh. It's decorated in a modern Thai Lanna style with dark hand-carved wood furniture, centered around an inner courtyard with gardens and an outdoor saltwater pool with a poolside bar. Air-conditioned rooms include furnished balconies, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and en-suite bathrooms. The restaurant has a casual atmosphere and serves international cuisines, plus a free breakfast buffet with hot and cold options. Travelers preferring a quiet location away from the touristy city center might like the Sakorn Residence instead, which adds a fitness center and a coffee shop.

Na Inn Bed & Breakfast
136 / 6 - 7 Rajpakinai Rd Prasingha

Na Inn is a tiny budget hotel with just 10 rooms located in the eastern part of Chiang Mai's historic old city. It's a great base from which to explore the famed temples, plus there are lots of restaurants, bars, and shops nearby. The hotel itself is quite plain, but it offers a good value with its central location. Rooms are large and mostly clean, though worn, and have amenities like air-conditioning, refrigerators, and old tube TVs. Wi-Fi is free, as is a simple breakfast -- though it's basically just toast and coffee -- plus bikes are available for rent. Rooms at The 3 Sis hotel are a bit nicer, plus the on-site cafe serves lunch and dinner, but rates are more expensive.

Tamarind Village

The Tamarind Village is a charming boutique hotel located in the middle of Chiang Mai's old city. The small resort, built in a traditional northern Thai Lanna style with whitewashed plaster walls and dark timber beams, is set around lovely courtyards with flower-filled gardens and a 200-year-old giant tamarind tree. The rooms here, although small, are filled with unique touches such as homemade ethnic hill tribe handicrafts and outdoor showers, with cozy balconies overlooking the gardens. While there is no fitness center and the swimming pool is small, there is a pampering spa with beautiful decor, and the cozy poolside restaurant serves up northern Thai cuisine.

ZZ House
229/2, Tha Sa Toi Road

ZZ House is a charming budget guesthouse located just east of the Ping River in a small alleyway. There are only 12 rooms here, half of which have air-conditioning, and half of which only have fans. Despite being basic, rooms are bright, and come with desks and mini-fridges with minibar items. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, but there aren't many other features. This is popular spot with the backpacker set, but it's a long 20-minute walk to the gate of the old city. Travelers wanting something more central may prefer the Funky Monkey Guesthouse instead.

Chankam Boutique Hotel
7/2 Arak Rd. Soi 4, Phra sing Subdistrict

Set along a quaint, cobblestone backstreet in the heart of Chiang Mai’s old walled city, the Chankam Boutique Hotel is a tiny, three-and-a-half-pearl hotel that's close to the city’s main attractions. The 12 rooms are decorated in a traditional Thai style, and are kitted out with king-size beds, Nespresso coffee machines, modern bathrooms, and free soft drinks from the minibar. Guests enjoy the free Western-style breakfast, served in the hotel’s plush lounge area, although the selection is a bit basic and some guests aren’t too keen on having to order it the night beforehand. The hotel has free Wi-Fi and offers free bikes to borrow, but there's no pool. Those dead-set on staying in a hotel with a pool might want to check out the BED Phrassingh -- but it's adult-only.

Maraya Hotel & Resort
12/2 Moo 3, Pa Daet subdistrict

Set on the banks of the Ping River, and with enviable views of the ancient Wiang Kum Kam city, the Maraya Hotel and Resort is a tiny, but stylish, mid-range boutique spot. The 18 rooms are large and bright, with luxe touches like deep soaking tubs, rainfall showers, and large flat-screen TVs. Although they can feel somewhat generic with cheap-looking wood veneer furniture which is a let-down, given the elegant, Lanna-style decor in the airy pagodas housing the hotel’s lounge and restaurant. The hotel offers free shuttle buses to the old town and night market, but guests looking to stay in a more central spot might want to try the U Chiang Mai, in the heart of the walled city.
