Romyen Garden Resort
40/1-5 Chiangrai - Chiangmai Highway, Baan Taladkwuan, Tambon Taladkwuan

The Romyen Garden Resort is a sleepy, lush resort located about 20 minutes outside of Chiang Mai down a dirt road -- yet it's just minutes from the main road into town. There are only six bungalows here, ranging from a divided smaller one to an entire house suitable for large groups. While some of the bungalows are pretty rustic, others look brighter and more modern. All bungalows come with televisions, DVD players, mini-fridges, free Wi-Fi and breakfast, large beds, and small desks, along with outdoor decks. Some of the bigger bungalows have kitchens. The resort does not have any facilities other than a small restaurant where breakfast is served and dinners can be ordered. It's a great spot if you are looking for peace and quiet but while the bungalows do have rustic charm, some of them look pretty worn, and the prices are certainly not as low as what some may expect for the area.

RarinJinda Wellness Spa Resort
14 Charoenraj Road, Wat Kate

Situated on the east side of the Ping River, a 10-minute walk from downtown Chiang Mai, RarinJinda Wellness Spa Resort is an upscale 35-room boutique resort with a one-of-a-kind spa. Stylish rooms have huge balconies and some have direct pool access. The hotel's main attraction is its spa, which comes with an onsen-style hot spring pool, and there's also a fitness center, a library, and a high-end restaurant, Deck 1. Room rates are high, and those shopping around for a good value may want to compare rates at the Siripanna Resort, which is on the same side of the river but lacks the impressive spa facilities found at RarinJinda.

Hotel M Chiang Mai

The 79-room Hotel M Chiang Mai is a budget hotel that sits right inside the Tha Phae Gate, which is the eastern entryway into Chiang Mai's historic old city. Rooms are sparsely furnished and windows don't open, though all include air-conditioning and flat-screen TVs. A breakfast-only restaurant is on the second floor, though breakfast costs extra unless guests book through the hotel's website. There are bicycles for rent, and the hotel provides a free shuttle to the night market downtown, but that's about it. Travelers may want to compare rates at Thannatee Boutique, which has much nicer rooms and better facilities at similar rates.

Sri Pat Guest House

In the quiet northeast corner of Chiang Mai's old city, the two-pearl Sri Pat Guest House is a longstanding operation with just 24 rooms. Artsy coffee shops, restaurants, and other tourist-oriented spots abound nearby, and the ornate Wat Chiang Man is just down the road. Rooms here are simple, but clean, with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, balconies, and free Wi-Fi. The guest house has a small swimming pool, a breakfast-only restaurant, and bicycles to rent. It's not as stylish as the Green Tiger Vegetarian House down the street, but it is a bit cheaper, and is a good choice for those who want to stay inside the moat and save some cash.

Baan Orapin Bed and Breakfast
150 Charoenraj Road, Wat Gate, Muang

Baan Orapin is a tiny bed-and-breakfast set in a charming 100-year-old traditional Thai house. The resort hides behind a gate on the river road on the east side of the Ping River, away from the tourist hordes, yet only 15 to 20 minutes by foot into the heart of downtown. There are only 15 rooms here, all with fine wood floors, four-poster teak beds, rainfall showers, safes, televisions, and free Wi-Fi. The grounds and old buildings on the property are lovely, and it's a quiet retreat from the traffic outside, although there aren't any major features other than a small swimming pool and pleasant indoor/outdoor niche for having breakfast. It's a good choice for those looking for a quiet and alternative stay in an intimate old home, which is fairly priced against the competition.

Eastin Tan Chiang Mai
165 Huay Kaew Road

Eastin Tan Hotel Chiang Mai is a sleek and modern four-pearl hotel right next to trendy Nimmanhaemin Road -- a 10-minute ride to the old city. The 128 stylish rooms are bright and get plenty of natural light, though the style is simple. All have furnished balconies and lovely bathrooms with contemporary fixtures. Many have fully equipped kitchens, and apartment-style units with separate bedrooms are available. Features include a covered swimming pool with a whirlpool hot tub, a fitness center with a steam room and a sauna, and an all-day restaurant, T Station, built to resemble a 1920's American railway station. Guests looking for something with more boutique style in the old city should consider similarly priced BanThai Village, though its pool is smaller.

Chiang Mai Gate Hotel

Chiang Mai Gate is located just to the south of the old city, a five-minute walk to the moat that marks the its entrance. This two-and-a-half-pearl hotel is over 50 years old and some of the 121 rooms show their age, especially the spacious Standard Rooms. More modern rooms are smaller, but feature pleasant Lanna northern Thai decor, and all rooms have flat-screen TVs, minibars, and come with free Wi-Fi and breakfast with a decent number of buffet options. The hotel has a decent swimming pool, a large restaurant, and a bar/cafe. Massage services and bike rentals are available, too. The nearby Thannatee Boutique has fresher rooms and better style overall.

Club One Seven Chiang Mai
385/2 Charoen Prathet Rd., Changklan, Muang

The mid-range, 11-room Club One Seven Chiang Mai is a gay-friendly hotel on the Ping River in Chiang Mai's residential Chang Khlan area south of the Old City. Traditional teak wood rooms have en-suite tile bathrooms, and some have terraces with exceptional river or garden views. There is a popular sauna and outdoor pool, as well as free breakfast served at the on-site restaurant and bar. No female guests or children are allowed at the hotel, and the rustic vibe and hotel's age (which shows in some spots) won't be for everyone. For more traditional, urban-chic digs, guests should consider Dusit D2, near the Night Market, which doesn't have a men-only policy.

Varada Place
10 Ratchaphruek Road

The budget, 50-room Varada Place is in Chang Phueak, just a 10-minute walk from the walls of Chiang Mai's iconic Old CIty. Air-conditioned, pleasant rooms are basic and impeccably clean, with balconies and en-suite bathrooms; however, some rooms suffer traffic noise. Wi-Fi is free and the friendly owner has a wealth of local knowledge (a highlight for many guests), but no breakfasts are served. There are plenty of trendy restaurants and street food on Nimmanheiman Road, also just 10 minutes away on foot. Guests looking for more amenities should consider the similarly priced Awanahouse in the Old City, with its outdoor pool and on-site restaurant.

Na Nirand Romantic Boutique Resort
1/1 Soi 9, Charoenprathet Road, Changklan Subdistrict

Opened in November 2016, Na Nirand Romantic Boutique Resort is a charming luxury property offering a quiet escape along Ping River, about a 20-minute walk from the Old City walls. The hotel's design is inspired by the late-19th century, with colonial-style wood furniture, woven cloths, and patterned tiling. This look continues in the 45 elegant rooms, all of which have furnished terraces, free (albeit spotty) Wi-Fi, and an array of toiletries. Most have separate showers and tubs, and four huge units have access to a shared private pool. A chic outdoor pool adjacent to a huge 100-year-old rain tree acts as the centerpiece, plus there are an all-day restaurant serving Thai and international fare, a rooftop bar above it, and another pool bar. A small spa offers a range of treatments, and there are a few pieces of outdoor exercise equipment. Families may prefer the more kid-friendly Shangri-La Hotel Chiang Mai.
