Hotel Cornelisz
PC Hooftstraat 24-28

The Hotel Cornelisz is a fairly stylish mid-range hotel, located on one of the most exclusive shopping streets in Amsterdam. The neighborhood is home to the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and tram stations, and all are within easy walking distance. The minimalist furnishings contrast with the '70s-style light fixtures and '80s-style wall art, making the common spaces fall a bit short of the wow factor that other boutique hotels deliver. Its 51 rooms, however, feel refreshingly contemporary, albeit small in size. Despite the bustling location, street noise is minimal in the rooms. Features are few, there are no fitness facilities or meeting rooms, and there's no full restaurant -- only breakfast service, for a fee. It's worth comparison shopping with the three-pearl Conscious Hotel, which offers hot, organic breakfast dishes and often lower rates.

Ozo Hotel

The 165-room, three-and-a-half-pearl Ozo Hotel combines a smart, contemporary look with amenities geared toward business travelers. It’s far from the city center with little in walking distance beyond businesses and a metro station. Modern rooms are attractively styled and well-soundproofed, and have flat-screen TVs, kettles for coffee and tea, and mini-fridges. But not all guests appreciate the frosted-glass bathroom walls. The restaurant serves three meals a day, plus the Ozo offers a free breakfast, a small gym, and a few meeting rooms. The more eclectically decorated Hotel V Frederiksplein may be a better option for those who want to be closer to the city center, though rates are sometimes higher.

377 House - Amsterdam

The three-pearl 377 House - Amsterdam is a traditional canal house with fashionable, design-conscious decor and a romantic vibe that makes it a hit with visiting couples. It’s optimally located next to one of Amsterdam’s canals, which means there are great views from many of its 15 air-conditioned rooms. A dark and handsome design characterizes the rooms, though some can be cramped. And on-site features are fairly limited to free Wi-Fi, bike rentals, and breakfast (for a fee). The Hotel De Hallen is a nearby alternative with an equally trendy design plus an on-site dining option and a public computer.

Die Port van Cleve

The Die Port van Cleve is a 122-room hotel with a Dutch neo-classical facade and marvelously maintained Old Amsterdam bar. Situated a stone's throw from Dam Square, it's popular with tourists who enjoy stepping out right into the city's buzzing center. Rooms are nothing special, and some are a little noisy during the day, but are clean and modern with mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and electric kettles. The similarly priced and centrally located Convent Hotel might also appeal to those looking for a historic hotel.

Hotel Amsterdam - De Roode Leeuw

There's little in the way of wow factor at The Hotel Amsterdam - De Roode Leeuw besides its buzzing central location. The hustle and bustle right on its doorstep might be too much for some, but the hotel's position makes exploring Amsterdam a breeze. Don't expect too much in the way of interior design, but the on-site restaurant does provide some plush, traditional surrounds as well as street views from its covered patio. Rooms are contemporary if not quite luxurious. Ultimately, the hotel is light on the features you might expect from an advertised four-star property, but for those who want to be in thick of it, the price is right for what you get and the location is hard to beat.

Wittenberg
Nieuwe Kerkstraat 157

Catering to the expat market, the four-pearl Wittenberg is a beautiful long-stay property located in a quiet, residential area in the eastern edge of the Canal Ring. Sunny, upmarket apartments range from cozy studios to large three-bedroom units, all equipped with full kitchens, Apple TVs, free Wi-Fi, and squeaky-clean bathrooms with rainfall showers. The property offers all the perks of residential living with a few hotel-like features, including weekly wine hours, a small gym, and a 24-hour front desk. Though the Wittenberg is located about a 20-minute walk from most major attractions, those calling Amsterdam home for a few weeks of months may appreciate the quieter location near the Botanical Gardens, the Hermitage Gallery, and several pleasant parks. Seven nights is the minimum here, so shorter-stay visitors should consider the central Hotel V Nesplein, which has a popular bar on-site.

Luxury Suites Amsterdam
Oudeschans 75

Luxury Suites Amsterdam is an upscale 25-suite hotel set on the Oudeschans canal in a quiet spot that's still close to restaurants, sights, and public transit. The hotel offers the freedom of an apartment without losing the perks of hotel amenities -- there's a 24-hour lobby bar and a small gym, though there's no full-service restaurant  or a spa. Suites are spacious with elegant decor, fully equipped kitchenettes, seating areas, roomy bathrooms, and high-end amenities like 60-inch smart TVs with keyboards. Service here is personal and posh: guests get free welcome drinks, and plus in-room massages, taxi service, and babysitting can be arranged for a fee. The Dylan Amsterdam has a more central location and a Michelin-starred restaurant on-site, but lacks the spacious rooms of this property.

InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam
Professor Tulpplein 1

Set overlooking the Amstel River, the stunning, luxurious Intercontinental Amstel is one of Amsterdam’s most iconic hotels. Its 79 rooms and suites are some of the largest in town, and are outfitted in an elegant style that combines beautiful antiques and handmade porcelain with top-of-the-line amenities and palatial marble bathrooms. Dining is outstanding at both La Rive and at Amstel Brasserie, and the gorgeous Amstel Lounge is popular among locals and tourists alike for its excellent afternoon tea service and lovely river views. The hotel also features exceptional fitness and wellness facilities, complete with personal trainers, massage services, and a heated indoor pool with large windows. In this price range, The Dylan Amsterdam is more contemporary and has a more central location in the Canal Ring.

Citiez Hotel Amsterdam
Osdorpplein 372

Citiez Hotel Amsterdam is budget hotel with lively decor and a hostel-like atmosphere located in a residential neighborhood that's far from the city center. The retail mall it's attached to might be one of the most interesting things about the bland area. The property's 71 guest rooms are modern but tiny -- with bathrooms only a few steps from beds -- and some are windowless. Standard amenities include AC, flat-screen TVs, safes, and free Wi-Fi, but units lack kettles and wardrobes or shelves to stow clothing. Upgraded units have mini-fridges and Nespresso machines. The lobby doubles as a 24-hour cafe frequented by locals that serves Dutch products and organic coffee, but breakfast costs extra. Travelers looking for a stay closer to Amsterdam's nightlife should look into the hip and well-priced Volkshotel.

Hotel Piet Hein
Vossiusstraat 52 /53

The Hotel Piet Hein is a sleek, nautically themed upper-middle-range hotel with 81 rooms, centrally located in the Museum Quarter. Unusual for Amsterdam, the property has a spacious terrace, which is beautifully surrounded by ivy-covered walls. There are also a cozy lounge and bar indoors, which, like the guest rooms, are decorated in muted earth tones and with high-quality wood and leather furnishings. Guest rooms have flat-screen TVs, safes, and the brand's signature comfortable beds; suites overlook nearby Vondelpark, and have large soaking tubs. Wi-Fi and breakfast are free. Compared with others in its class, this hotel has impressive features and is very well situated for tourists, within walking distance of the canal district and shopping.
