Seven Bridges Hotel

Named for the seven bridges it overlooks at the intersection of the beautiful Reguliersgracht and Keizersgracht canals, the eight-room Seven Bridges Hotel is a real slice of Old Amsterdam. It's housed in a 300-year-old authentic canal house, carefully restored and stuffed with well-chosen antiques by the owners. An annex building is next door. Rooms are elegantly decorated and come with free Wi-Fi. A continental breakfast (for a fee) is delivered to the rooms. The inn is a good choice for travelers who want charm and serenity and don't need full hotel facilities. Prices are also reasonable for such a central, upscale location.

Rho Hotel

The RHO Hotel's location is hard to fault -- it's just off Dam Square but on a relatively quiet side street, making it ideal for tourists who want proximity to Amsterdam's buzzing center and minimal noise disturbance in their rooms. However, despite the beautifully ornate reception area, much of the hotel is lacking in atmosphere with many of the rooms, though clean and fairly modern, in need of a style upgrade. Still, they're adequate for a mid-range property and prices are fair, particularly given the central location, though it may also be worth considering the nearby Best Western Dam Square Inn.

NH Amsterdam Museum Quarter
Hobbemakade 50

The NH Amsterdam Museum Quarter overlooks a picturesque canal, and is within walking distance of Amsterdam's famous museums and the nearby Canal Ring. It's far from the most compelling hotel in the city, opting for a more conservative, dated design style, with an ambiance that pales in comparison to the sophisticated College Hotel nearby. But the rates are slightly more reasonable and the outdoor courtyard gives it some extra appeal. Top-floor rooms each have an incredible wall of windows, sloping at a gentle angle from floor-to-ceiling, with impressive views of the canal or the inner courtyard. A bit removed from the city center and its congested traffic, the hotel is also popular with business travelers, who can stay easily connected to the southern business district. The hotel also has its own underground parking.

NH Amsterdam Centre
Stadhouderskade 7

The NH Amsterdam Centre is popular with tourists and business travelers who want a stylish and comfortable stay within walking distance of most of the city's sights. The hotel is a mid-range value; it includes nice features such as a fitness center and an interior courtyard, but extra fees are required for access to the spa and breakfast. Rooms are small, but up-to-date with free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs.

The Albus

The Albus is a 74-room upscale boutique hotel located in Amsterdam’s Canal Ring, near many popular sights. The rooms, lobby, and Senses restaurant are decorated in a chic, modern style by a well-known Netherlands designer. While some rooms are small, they're upscale and include such amenities as Nespresso coffeemakers. Street-side rooms can be noisy.

Aalborg Hotel Amsterdam

Away from the city's center in the De Pijp neighborhood, Aalborg Hotel offers 36 small yet comfortable rooms with a modern style. Each room looks different; for example, the Graffiti Room has cool black and blue graffiti art stenciled on the walls and ceiling, while others feature black-and-white framed photographs. However, amenities such as ceiling fans and tube TVs are older and could do with replacing, space is tight, and storage space is insufficient. The on-site 25th Hour Lounge sounds stylish and trendy, but it looks more like a glorified sports bar. Guests can grab a continental breakfast (for a fee) at the breakfast buffet, but it's quite small and the seating is minuscule. Off of the bar is the Mac Cafe, a computer cluster with three Mac desktops that guests can use free of charge during their stay. The hotel definitely has a sense of humor about it that resonates with the staff and the guests: no one takes themselves too seriously at this laidback, youthful hotel. A cool vibe is strived for, if it is not always delivered. The quiet and pretty location may be an upside for some; it's far from main attractions, but close to tram stations that will get visitors through the city quickly and efficiently.

Hotel Sint Nicolaas

The mid-range Hotel Sint Nicolaas occupies a prime location in the heart of Amsterdam, just a short walk from Central Station and many of the city’s most popular attractions. It’s a quaint, 24-room boutique hotel with attractive amenities including a free hot breakfast buffet, free Wi-Fi, and a cozy lobby bar with a real fireplace. Rooms are comfortable and stylish, with mini-fridges, safes, Nespresso coffeemakers, and lovely bathrooms. But room sizes can vary, and Single rooms are small. Rates are fair given the hotel’s superior location, but it often sells out on weekends. One attractive alternative is the upper-middle-range Crowne Plaza Amsterdam City Centre that’s across the street. It’s a clean and modern chain hotel with a fitness center and lots of other amenities, but rates are higher there.

Boutique B&B Kamer01
416 Singel Amsterdam-Centrum Amsterdam

There's little to find fault with at the Boutique B&B Kamer01. It's set in a beautifully renovated 16th-century Amsterdam townhouse in the heart of the Canal Ring, and serves a five-course champagne breakfast each morning overlooking a picturesque neighborhood scene (it's clear why the Canal Ring is on the Unesco World Heritage List). The three rooms are sumptuously furnished and equipped with DVD libraries and iMacs, while bathrooms come complete with designer toilets and luxury Korres toiletries. While guests can pay a similar price for luxury hotel with much more in the way of facilities, such as the nearby Hotel Pulitzer, many prefer the boutique intimacy and meticulous attention to detail offered here.

Boutique Hotel View
Leidsekade 77

Among the two-pearl hotels vying for the tourists who flock to central Amsterdam, the family-run Boutique Hotel View stands out for its recently updated common areas and more stylish rooms, some of which have overlook a canal. It's right on a tram line, making it a convenient base for exploring the city, but can also suffer from the heavy traffic that comes with it -- which can be exacerbated by the area's late-night party scene. The noise levels and lack of an elevator make it best-suited to younger tourists looking to experience Amsterdam's canal life, without the usual frills -- or the usual bill.

Apollo Museumhotel Amsterdam City Centre
P.C. Hooftstraat 2

A prime location one block from the Rijksmuseum is the main benefit to a stay at the Apollo Museumhotel Amsterdam City Centre. It's a solid, affordable mid-level hotel with a breakfast buffet, small cocktail bar, business center, and outdoor terrace. Although rooms are very small and lack the pizzazz of those at the nearby Hotel Cornelisz, they do offer free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs.
