Flying Pig Downtown

The Flying Pig Downtown is a friendly, fun-focused Amsterdam hostel. Located on a busy, central shopping street, this hostel is surrounded by many of the city's nightspots, while also being a short walk to popular sights and the Red Light district. Private rooms are available in addition to the secure and tidy dorms, and the property is frequented by a mainly backpacking clientele. There is a modern guest kitchen, cozy smoking lounge, and lively bar on-site. For those looking for a more subdued hostel option, the Inner Amsterdam near Vondelpark has similar rates, but less buzz.

Amadi Panorama Hotel
Ijburglaan 539, Zeeburg

The Amadi Panorama Hotel is an upper-middle-range hotel with a chic and modern vibe located on Ijburg island, in a newly developed waterside district of Amsterdam. The 67 guest rooms are spacious and get lots of natural light through large floor-to-ceiling windows, and all come with flat-screen TVs, Nespresso coffeemakers, and free minibars. However, past guests have reported dirty carpets and some wear, and on-site features are limited to a breakfast service (for a fee), free Wi-Fi, and free tea and coffee. Travelers may want to also consider the similarly priced NH Amsterdam Zuid, which offers a restaurant, a fitness room, and a sauna, but charges extra for high-speed internet.

New West Inn Amsterdam
Reimerswaalstraat 5

The 180-room New West Inn Amsterdam is a relaxed (but dated) three-pearl property located in a suburb, a 30-minute drive from the city center. Rooms were renovated in the winter of 2016, and though plain, they're spacious and contemporary, with flat-screen TVs and tea- and coffee-making facilities. In-room heating and cooling can be a trial, however, and there is some noise in back rooms. The hotel has a casual restaurant, though guests report that food is average, as well as a bar, fitness center, and a tanning bed that's available to use for a fee. Bikes can be rented and discount tickets for area attractions may be found at the reception desk. Travelers seeking a mid-range property in the center might want to consider the Best Western Dam Square Inn or Ibis Amsterdam Centre, but rates are more expensive.

citizenM Amsterdam South
Prinses Irenestraat 30

Modeled after the "capsule hotels" from Japan, with small rooms and largely automated service, citizenM Amsterdam City has a mega-cool feel and chic design features at affordable prices. The tech-savvy rooms are pod-like in design, and the open-plan lobby mixes retro and futuristic styles. The hotel also has a 24-hour canteen and lobby iMac center. Although the location is a little far from tourist attractions, a tram stop is adjacent to the property for access to the rest of the city.

Crowne Plaza Amsterdam South
George Gershwinlaan 101

Located in Amsterdam's business district, within an eight-minute walk of a subway and train station, the upscale Crowne Plaza Amsterdam South appeals mostly to business travelers. The 207 guest rooms and suites are done up in a chic, modern style and are well-equipped with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, minibars, and electric kettles. The Club Rooms and suites feature extras like Illy espresso machines, rainfall showers, and include access to the Club Lounge for free breakfast, drinks, and snacks. There's an on-site restaurant, lounge bar, small fitness center, and meeting facilities, but no swimming pool or spa. By comparison, the upscale Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam set in a historical building offers an indoor pool and spa, and, at times, cheaper rates.

WOW Hostel Amsterdam

The two-pearl WOW Hostel Amsterdam is an artsy budget option with an urban industrial vibe in Amsterdam’s Kolenkit neighborhood, close to up-and-coming Bos en Lommer. A simple restaurant serves affordable dinners and continental breakfasts are included in rates. The 57 rooms are mostly dorms, done in single primary colors, and feature free Wi-Fi. In such a cool building with innovative concepts like artists in residence and an urban farm, travelers might expect a vibrant atmosphere -- but the social scene here tends to be low key. Downsides? The location is removed fro the city center and bed bugs were reported in 2017. The WOW is one of the cheapest options in Amsterdam, but travelers should consider paying a little more to stay at the centrally-located St Christopher’s at Winston Hotel.

Hotel Internationaal

The Hotel International is a budget hotel with eight rooms that's best suited to young travelers. Rooms include flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and earplugs to help guests with bothersome noise from the street and from other rooms. Though the rooms are simple and some have shared bathrooms, they provide more privacy than what's found at a hostel. Cafe International, the on-site pub, has an antique nautical decor, a lively atmosphere, and doubles as the lobby. However, it's a little seedy, and families or solo female travelers may be more comfortable at the family- and budget-friendly, Hotel Luxer.

Hotel The Golden Bear
Kerkstraat 37

Housed in two 18th-century buildings with incredibly steep, narrow stairs, the 26-room The Golden Bear is a no-frills property better suited to young (and fit) travelers on a budget. Its location in the Canal Ring is the hotel’s main selling point, which puts guests within easy walking distance of all of Amsterdam’s top attractions, including Dam Square, the Museum Quarter, and Nine Streets shopping area. Rates are some of the lowest in this area for a non-hostel property, but room quality varies widely, ranging from tiny units with cleanliness and maintenance issues, to pleasant rooms with private bathrooms and decent amenities. Basic continental breakfasts are usually available for a fee, and front desk staff can arrange bike rentals, but the hotel lacks common areas and reception closes at night. The similarly priced and nearby Boutique Hotel View is a good alternative.

France Hotel Amsterdam
Oudezijds Kolk 11

France Hotel Amsterdam is a simple three-pearl hotel set next to a pretty canal, with a prime location just a five-minute walk from Centraal Station. It's a great spot for budget tourists wanting to explore the city on foot, with the heart of the Red Light District and Dam Square within easy walking distance. Many of the hotel's 57 guest rooms are windowless, and they range from smallish singles to somewhat cramped quads, but they all have flat-screen TVs and are decorated well above the standard for the area. Facilities are slim, with just a lobby lounge and a shared outdoor terrace, but guests get free breakfast at the pub next door. Compare rates at Hotel Luxer nearby, which has larger rooms with windows and its own bar.

St Christopher's at Winston Hotel

People book a room at the St Christopher's at Winston Hotel to have fun and mingle with like-minded revelers. The property is set in a busy street just two blocks from the Red Light District, and is thus part of the throbbing heart of Amsterdam's nightlife. Eccentric and idiosyncratic guest rooms and dorms are generally clean and surprisingly quiet, though some noise is inevitable. Many hostels don't come this well presented and organized, but if you'd rather be a bit farther away from the edgier part of town, check out the Flying Pig Downtown.
