The Hay-Adams

Quite possibly the most famous hotel in the capital, and deservedly so, the five-pearl Hay-Adams draws power brokers, dignitaries, and VIPs from around the world with its impeccable service, great bar and restaurant, and elegant rooms, some of which overlook its famous next-door neighbor, the White House. This historic property has stately, classically styled interiors full of Old World details, and its 145 guest rooms come equipped with an array of modern comforts, including large flat-screen TVs, well stocked minibars, and free Wi-Fi. Business amenities abound here, with a 24/7 business center complete with a Nespresso machine, free morning newspapers, and even Tesla car service around the downtown area. The Jefferson hotel has a similar historic and luxurious vibe -- plus added amenities like a spa -- but it doesn't beat the Hay-Adams' location.

Courtyard Washington DC/US Capitol

The three-pearl Courtyard Washington, DC/U.S. Capitol opened in 2009 in the emerging NoMA neighborhood just north of Capitol Hill. It’s a modern property, and its location next to a metro station makes for easy access to top sights, though none are within walking distance. An attractive features package includes a restaurant and bar, 24-hour gym and business center, plus a pool and evening room service. While the 218 guest rooms are tidy and comfortable, with flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi, they lack microwaves and decor looks tired. Travelers who want accommodations that include breakfast, which costs extra at the Courtyard, can compare rates with the nearby Hyatt Place Washington DC/US Capitol.

Hotel Madera

This 82-room upscale boutique Hotel Madera may lack amenities -- there's no fitness center and not much of a business center -- but the can-do staff, modern guest rooms, jewel of a restaurant, and vibrant neighborhood location add up to a solid value in Dupont Circle. Boldly colored contemporary decor in guest rooms is accompanied by an array of modern amenities -- but bathrooms are tiny and cramped, and Wi-Fi incurs a fee. Though features may be limited, the hotel piles on the freebies, including evening wine receptions, gourmet coffee/tea in the lobby, and late-night milk and cookies, plus pets stay for free and enjoy plenty of perks as well. Travelers seeking more amenities may want to check out the nearby Palomar, which has a well-equipped fitness center, a pool, and a larger lobby.

Donovan Hotel

The Donovan Hotel is currently closed for renovations through June 2020. Please refer to the hotel's official website for the most up-to-date information in the meantime.

Kimpton Rouge Hotel

This upper-middle-range property is a few blocks from Dupont Circle, one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods. With edgy modern design throughout the property and rooms featuring bunk beds, Xboxes, and animal print bathrobes, Hotel Rouge is easily one of the more fun-spirited and family-friendly hotels in D.C. (though couples and business travelers are equally welcome here). Highlights include large, sexy rooms; in-room spa treatments, and nightly wine hours. There are slightly cheaper hotels in the heart of Dupont Circle, but the Rouge delivers more style and perks than most of its competitors. However, visitors interested in seeing Washington's major attractions may want to consider a hotel closer to the National Mall.

Courtyard Washington, DC/Foggy Bottom

This mid-range, 147-room hotel is located near George Washington University in the sleepy Foggy Bottom neighborhood, just a 15-minute walk from The White House. A block away is the 19th Street bus station, and a five-minute walk east is Farragut West Metro station for connections to attractions across the city. There are few surprises here, and everything is clean and modern, with muted neutral decor throughout. Rooms have flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. There’s an indoor pool, simple fitness center, and business center on-site, but breakfast is not included in the nightly rates. There’s also a bar and bistro, and a lovely outdoor patio. Guests who are willing to replace the indoor pool for suites with kitchens might try nearby River Inn, where rates are lower.

Grand Hyatt Washington

One of D.C.'s largest hotels, the three-and-a-half-pearl Grand Hyatt Washington has 897 rooms and suites that cater to the city's plethora of business travelers. With many of its guests conducting business on-site, the hotel has 42,000 square feet of meeting space and a full-service business center. It's also located just three blocks from the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and is connected to the Metro Center station that services Metrorail's Red, Orange, Silver, and Blue Lines. Rooms are modern and include multimedia-enabled TVs and free Wi-Fi. Two restaurants, a Starbucks Reserve, full gym, and Club Lounge add to its appeal. The newer Marriott Marquis is a comparable, business-oriented hotel that's more stylish and located just across the street from the convention center. It's worth considering if you have a bigger budget.

Kimpton Hotel Monaco Washington DC
700 F St NW Neighborhood Penn Quarter

Kimpton Hotels operates multiple properties in the nation's capital and the Hotel Monaco is one of its most upmarket. In a historic landmark building, this four-pearl property has 183 rooms and suites with soaring ceilings and handsome decor, plus a wealth of modern amenities. Its stunning lobby is a hub of social activity, including a free nightly wine hour. Located in the Penn Quarter, some of the city's top museums, entertainment venues, and restaurants are nearby. The Monaco's own restaurant, Dirty Habit, is well-liked for its food and cocktails, as well as its outdoor patio. For a nearby alternative, The Courtyard Washington Convention Center might seem a surprising choice, but its historic setting and notable restaurant make it a fine bet, plus it adds a pool (which the Monaco lacks).

Hotel 1600

Located in upscale Dupont Circle, just a short walk from some of D.C.'s best restaurants and nightlife, the Courtyard doesn't look dazzling, but its 156 bigger-than-average rooms, helpful staff, small indoor pool and Jacuzzi, well-equipped fitness center, quality independent restaurant, and nice perks (like free coffee, cookies, and Wi-Fi) make it an excellent choice.

The St. Regis Washington, D.C.

The feather in Starwood's D.C. cap, the luxury St. Regis hotel is just two blocks from Lafayette Park and under a 10-minute walk of the White House. Beautiful, classically styled interiors include an atmospheric lobby bar and 172 guest rooms, where traditional decor is accompanied by modern amenities like flat-screen TVs, DVD players, and Bose iPod docks. The on-site Decanter restaurant serves haute American cuisine, plus a wonderful afternoon tea service is available and the hotel offers free evening Champagne. Other perks include a 24/7 business center, several meeting rooms, and free area car service -- but the fitness center offers a limited number of machines and high speed Wi-Fi incurs a fee (free for SPG members). Travelers might want to compare with the nearby Hay-Adams or the Jefferson, which offer plenty of charm and similar amenities.
