Mason Elephant Lodge
Jl. Elephant Park, Taro

The 25-room Elephant Safari Park & Lodge is a luxury property that delivers a one-of-a-kind vacation on a refuge with 31 Sumatran elephants, safari rides, elephant chauffeur service, a show arena, a museum, a gift shop, and a botanical garden. There’s also a modern gym, spa, and on-site indoor and outdoor dining. Balinese-style rooms have flat-screen TVs, safes, and elephant pick-up platforms, and some even have elephant park views. Suites feature whirlpool tubs and butler service. The gritty safari experience (which requires getting your hands dirty) isn’t for everyone, and the location is a bit removed from the sights, but it nonetheless delivers a luxurious stay with high-end amenities and features. Wi-Fi, breakfast, and parking are all free.

Natura Resort and Spa
Jl. Raya Laplapan, Petulu Village

The upscale 14-villa Natura Resort and Spa is a quiet and traditionally designed property overlooking the unspoiled Petanu River valley, a location that’s a short drive from downtown Ubud. Along with its secluded vibe, the romantic resort offers two infinity pools, a hot tub, an open-air restaurant and bar, and a riverside spa. Simply decorated thatched-roof villas have outdoor soaking tubs, private terraces, and -- in some -- private plunge pools. The hotel offers candlelit poolside dinners, free high tea in the afternoon, and free Wi-Fi throughout. However, some villa furnishings are dated and worn. For more luxurious interior designs, guests could consider the Ayung Resort Ubud.

Bambu Indah
Banjar Baung, Sayan

The 11-room Bambu Indah is a sustainable, upper-mid-range bamboo oasis that blends into the Indonesian jungle setting from its location above rice paddies and the Ayung River. The amenities at the resort match its ethos: They include an on-site greenhouse, natural pool, breezy yoga pavilion, and striking tree house. Guided tours and activities, plus a 24-hour front desk, are also on offer. The inviting open-air restaurant serves a menu made of organic ingredients, many grown on-site. Each Javanese bridal house is unique with rustic design, minibars, and indoor/outdoor bathrooms and patios. However, the bohemian experience means houses don’t have locks, TVs, or radios (but they do offer free Wi-Fi). The Puri Sunia Resort offers a more traditional stay.

Bidadari Private Villas & Retreat
Jl. Raya Kelabang-Moding, Kelabang Moding

The luxury Bidadari Private Villas & Retreat - Ubud is an intimate Balinese getaway in the forest that is home to six charming villas. Each of these spacious retreats has a private pool, kitchen or kitchenette, indoor/outdoor bathroom, and balcony or terrace. The resort offers a range of services, including a free round-trip Ubud shuttle, butler service, in-room dining, a 24-hour front desk, and guided bike tours. However, the jungle setting has steep steps that aren’t suitable for those with limited mobility. For a less rustic experience, try the Komaneka at Bisma. Wi-Fi is free throughout at Bidadari.

Ubud Green
Jl. Sriwedari no. 8

Ubud Green is a three-and-a-half-pearl all-villa property that's a five- to 10-minute drive from Ubud's town center. The star of the show here is the view, which looks out onto the hotel's own rice fields and the jungle beyond. These are particularly spectacular from the villas with private pools. The 16 villas feature air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi, and are silent at night. Some villas are looking a little tired, particularly the bathrooms, and insect issues aren't uncommon. The restaurant serves well-liked and healthy meals, and there's also a spa. Free shuttles run into town and mobile phones are provided to call the hotel. If you'd like something closer to Ubud's center, check out KajaNe Mua Private Villas instead, which has a bit more style but can be noisier.

Pertiwi Bisma
Jl. Bisma

Hotel Pertiwi Bisma 1 is an upper-middle-range hotel located a 10-minute walk from Monkey Forest Road. The on-site atmosphere is quiet, tranquil, and feels far from the buzz of downtown. The property features manicured tropical greenery and sits along a lush jungle valley perched above the river. The 35 rooms are clean and modern, feature elegant interiors, hardwood furnishings, roomy balconies, and modern amenities. Three room types are available, including affordably priced modern hotel style rooms and stylish wooden villas. Facilities include two swimming pools (with lush views), a yoga shala, and the affordably priced Kinara restaurant that serves Indonesian, Thai, and Western favorites. Parking and Wi-Fi are free. Komaneka at Bisma features more luxurious rooms and better facilities, including a spa, fitness center, and wedding chapel, though rates are higher.

Padma Ubud Retreat
Kajeng no. 13

Padma Ubud Retreat is a two-and-a-half-pearl bed-and-breakfast in the northern part of the center of Ubud, right by the city's famous Saraswati Temple and a short walk from tons of shops and restaurants. The 12 guest rooms are simple and bright and all have terraces or balconies plus sleek bathrooms. We noticed some musty odors in rooms. There's little in the way of amenities at this property, though breakfast is included in the room rates and includes lots of fresh tropical fruit along with made-to-order eggs. There's also a lovely outdoor swimming pool flanked with lush foliage. Travelers shopping around may want to also consider a stay at Ubud Bungalow, located right in the center of town.

Sapodilla Ubud
Jl. Raya Pengosekan

Sapodilla Ubud is a small, three-pearl hotel located in the southern part of Ubud, about a 10-minute walk to Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. The 14 rooms here are all called Suites, and while they are lovely, with marble floors and wooden furniture, they are a bit small and bland to merit their name. The piece de resistance here is the swimming pool, a long, narrow strip with a gorgeous vine-covered wall running along one side. Additional amenities are limited, though there is a free breakfast service at the beautiful White Ginger restaurant, along with three parking spots and a shuttle to the airport and area attractions. Travelers looking for a three-pearl property with a bit more in terms of amenities may want to compare rates at the Agung Raka Resort & Villas, which offers a mix of villas and hotel rooms.

Ubud Village Hotel
Jalan Monkey Forest

Ubud Village Hotel is an three-and-a-half-pearl boutique hotel located just outside of Ubud's main hub, on the popular Monkey Street. It's a 10-minute walk to both Ubud Market and Ubud Palace, and there are ample nearby restaurants, bars, and shops. The 64 guest rooms are modern with simple Balinese-style decor with flat-screen TVs and minibars -- some rooms have enclosed terraces. All rates include a free buffet breakfast, and there are a total of four on-site restaurants/bars for other meals and drinks. Other freebies include Wi-Fi, limited parking, shuttle into town, afternoon tea, and selected activities and experiences organized by the hotel. The two swimming pools, spa, and fitness center are nice bonuses. For stunning rice paddy views, along with similar rates and features, travelers can check out Puri Gangga Resort.

Blue Karma Nestling Ubud
Jalan Raya Suweta Lingkungan

Nestled among rice fields and rain forest removed from the bustling tourist hub of central Ubud, this beautiful upscale property is a resort more in the sense of being a peaceful haven rather than a sprawling property teeming with amenities. Relaxation is such a priority here that the 15 huge rooms, housed in traditional Javanese huts with tastefully remodeled interiors, don’t even have TVs or work desks. Guests pass their time on-site lounging by the beautiful outdoor pool, taking yoga or meditation classes, or getting spa treatments. Free amenities include breakfast, high tea, and Wi-Fi throughout. Guests seeking some solitude will love the creature comforts and natural beauty. There's also a free shuttle to Ubud. Svarga Loka Resort offers similar features (like a gorgeous pool and spa) but it’s walkable to the center of town.
