Sri Bungalows
Jl. Monkey Forest

Sri Bungalows is a tranquil budget hotel that has a classic Bali look and feel, and is ideally located along Monkey Forest Street, Ubud's most happening downtown locale. The hotel opened in 1995 and both the rooms and facilities are somewhat aged. The property features stunning rice field and river views, lush tropical gardens, two swimming pools, a riverside spa and yoga shala, and a restaurant serving Indonesian and Western favorites. The 48 bright rooms offer rice field or garden views, hardwood furniture, and modern amenities. Room types range from small suites to large two-story family bungalows. As an alternative hotel that's a five-minute walk from downtown, Pertiwi Bisma 2 features a more serene setting and standalone wooden bungalows with elegant interiors.

Yulia Village Inn
Monkey Forest Road

Yulia Village Inn is an upper-middle-range boutique hotel ideally located along the bustling Monkey Forest Road in downtown Ubud. The hotel features traditional Balinese architecture, tropical greenery, and a laidback vibe. The 19 rooms are reasonably priced, plus sport quality modern amenities and stylish contemporary interiors with intricately carved hardwood details. Facilities are limited, with just an outdoor swimming pool, a poolside lounge, and reception. The restaurant is only open for breakfast but room service is available all-day and there is a plethora of dining options within walking distance. Breakfast and Wi-Fi are included in most room rates. As an alternative hotel, Sri Bungalows features a bigger pool and a small spa.

Wapa di Ume Ubud
Jl. Suweta, Banjar Bentuyung

Tucked into the terraced rice fields of central Bali, Wapa di Ume Resort and Spa is a rustic four-pearl gem that's draws couples and newlyweds wanting to relish an upscale version of the simple life. Just a five-minute drive from central Ubud, its 33 modern rooms and villas have breezy, traditional Balinese accents with huge bathrooms, private balconies, and free Wi-Fi, but in the spirit of peace and tranquility there are no TVs. There are also two outdoor pools, free yoga, and a tasty restaurant serving an extensive free breakfast. Guests who need entertainment like TVs may want to consider The Purist, though rates will be higher.

Lumbung Sari Cottages
Monkey Forest Road

The 14-room Lumbung Sari Cottages is a charming mid-range property located in the heart of Ubud. There isn’t much in the way of amenities besides a cafe open for breakfast only, and a small though lovely pool with a swim-up bar and a handful of loungers, but rates are competitive for the location and include Wi-Fi, breakfast, afternoon tea, and shuttle service within the downtown Ubud area. Clean rooms have flat-screen TVs, minibars, air-conditioning, and electric kettles. Decor is simple in all, but each room has a few local touches, along with a balcony with serene garden views. Some bathrooms, however, could use an update. Travelers seeking something with a few more on-site amenities may want to consider the Agung Raka Resort & Spa, which has two pools and a spa, and is generally a few dollars cheaper.

KajaNe Yangloni
Jl. Peliatan

KajaNe Yangloni is a 48-room upscale hotel located in Mas, a 20-minute shuttle ride from Ubud. Rooms include ultra-private wooden villas with plunge pools plus spacious, contemporary suites, all with modern amenities. Set within manicured tropical gardens overlooking rice fields, the vibe is tranquil and the property features traditional Balinese details throughout. In fact, the hushed setting is a major reason to pick this hotel over its sister property in central Ubud. Facilities include a large yoga studio, fitness center, stylish spa, great outdoor pool, and an all-day restaurant. Rates usually include breakfast, as well as extras like afternoon tea, shuttle services, twice-weekly yoga classes, and daily cultural activities. As an alternative, guests can check out the Sankara Resort, which is similarly priced but has fewer on-site facilities.

Junjungan Ubud Hotel and Spa
Junjungan Ubud, Jl.Tirta Tawar km.3,5 , Br. Junjungan

Junjungan Ubud Hotel and Spa is a wonderfully peaceful boutique-style property surrounded by picturesque paddy fields. While some will love the feeling of remoteness, others might find the setting isolated, despite its location just a 10-minute drive from Ubud. The 10 rooms are clean and attractive and -- most importantly -- have balconies overlooking the lush surroundings. Evening fireflies add a touch of magic. Although the pool is smallish, the overall quality of facilities is impressive and the rates are more than reasonable for these intimate and serene mid-range lodgings.

Sri Ratih Cottages
Jl. Campuhan 1

The 28-room Sri Ratih Cottages is an upper-middle-range boutique resort with a rustic-chic vibe located in a quiet village within walking distance of Ubud. Rooms are particularly smart and spacious with nicely finished bathrooms, though views are often limited. Excellent food and an attractive -- albeit small -- pool area gives this hotel some real polish, with the only major drawbacks being lack of shuttle service and poor Wi-Fi. Overall, it's certainly one of the more stylish resorts of its kind, and pretty low rates make it a bargain too.

Ashoka Tree Resort
Jalan Raya Kedewatan, Banjar Tanggayuda

Situated 25-minutes north of Ubud, this 17-room, upper-middle-range property is simpler than many in the area, but can be a decent value for couples and families looking for the private villa experience. One- and Two-Bedroom Villas are modern and feature full kitchens and private plunge pools, though the decor and design isn't quite as stylish as many properties in Ubud. The hotel also features an on-site restaurant with free breakfast, an outdoor pool, many activities, and a free area shuttle. Guests looking for a bit more style who don't mind being outside central Ubud may want to check out Kamandalu Ubud, though not all of its authentic villas have pools.

Ketut's Place
Jl. Suweta no. 40, Sambahan

Ketut's Place is a family-run homestay in the foothills of Ubud, just a 10-minute walk from Ubud Palace and the market. Located inside Ketut's idyllic family compound, the homestay offers an intimate view into the daily lives of Balinese families. As such, the property has a lot more personality than its three-pearl competition, and features lots of beautiful Balinese architecture and design details. The homestay over looks a river gorge, and features a small restaurant, a spa, and swimming pool in a relaxed and tranquil setting. The 16 rooms are priced affordably, and have lots of charming personality, though they are a bit worn and Wi-Fi can be weak. As an alternative, The Mawa House has a similarly traditional setting and better-maintained rooms, but lacks the river views.

Mawa House
Jl. Nyuh Bojog, Desa Nyuh Kuning

Mawa House is a three-pearl guest house outside the small village of Nyuh Kuning. While it's away from the central Ubud action, the hotel is less than a five-minute walk from the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. The eight simple rooms are done in quaint Balinese style, and come with free Wi-Fi and balconies or terraces with pool views. Breakfast is available for a fee, and the restaurant serves light lunches, poolside barbecue dinners, and romantic candlelight dinners. The hotel also has a small outdoor pool and offers Balinese cultural activities and crafts. Guests may want to compare rates at the the nearby Saren Indah Hotel, which is comparable in quality though rooms at Mawa have a little more character.
