Chaulty Towers
149 / 31 Moo 4

Chaulty Towers is a tiny, family-run guest house on small hill above Lamai Beach. A great two-pearl value for Lamai, it feels secluded, but the main road and beach are within a 10- to 15-minute walk and the hotel runs a free shuttle into town. The six homey rooms are brightly furnished, and all include DVD players, TVs, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. There's a small swimming pool in the courtyard, plus a restaurant and bar serving English breakfasts and Thai food. The English owner and his Thai wife are good sources of local information, and the vibe here is akin to a home stay. While Chaulty Towers isn't as charming as the Montra, which is around the corner, its rates are much lower.

Crystal Bay Yacht Club
209/1 Moo 4, Ao Thongtakian, between Chaweng and Lamai

Crystal Bay Yacht Club is a mid-range hotel set along a scenic white-sand bay on Samui's eastern coast. The hotel’s immediate location is a bit quiet and offers little to see or do on foot, though downtown Lamai is a 10-minute drive away. The all-villa property features a traditional Thai aesthetic, quiet common areas, and manicured tropical grounds. The 43 villas have rustic facades, clean interiors, and quality amenities, though they are a bit dated. Rooms also include balcony seating areas and most have ocean views. All facilities are positioned beachfront and these include a saltwater swimming pool, a multi-cuisine restaurant and bar, and a massage hut offering traditional Thai massages. Those wanting to be closer to the action should consider the Weekender Resort, a beachfront property in the heart of downtown Lamai.

Lamai Buri Resort
126/69 M.3 Maret Koh Samui

This mid-range hotel houses 60 contemporary rooms an eight-minute walk from Lamai Beach. Unlike many hotels in the area, Lamai Buri Resort's decor doesn't have the traditional Thai style that some guests may hope for, but the design throughout is attractive and incorporates lots of wood. Guest rooms offer modern amenities such as air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi (though it's unreliable), minibars, and safes. TVs are provided, but some are old tube-style. Many (but not all) rooms offer a furnished outdoor seating area. The outdoor pool is pleasant and the restaurant's food and free breakfast receive positive reviews. Unfortunately, there are almost no other features to speak of. Those looking for more to do on-site may prefer Thai House Beach Resort, which has a fitness center and a beachfront massage house.

Samui Jasmine Resort
131/8 Moo 3

Samui Jasmine Resort is a boutique upper-middle-range hotel, set along a picturesque white-sand beach in downtown Lamai. Numerous dining venues, bars, and shops are within a short walk. The property features tropical grounds, quiet common areas, and Thai stylings and artwork. Facilities include a large outdoor swimming pool, a multi-cuisine restaurant and bar, plus an oceanside massage hut. The 35 rooms range from streamlined suites to elegant one- and two-bedroom villas with spacious floor plans and large whirlpool soaking tubs. Rooms have stylish well appointed interiors and handsome balcony seating areas. A large buffet breakfast spread is included in room rates and Wi-Fi is free throughout. Another beachfront hotel in the area worth considering is the Weekender Resort, which features an extensive range of facilities and a gorgeous swimming pool.

Ammatara Pura Pool Villa
128/75-76 Moo 3 T. Maret

Ammantara Pura Pool Villa is a luxury boutique hotel overlooking a picturesque white-sand beach, located a five-minute drive from downtown Lamai. The hotel features Thai architecture and decor, with an ornate and royal aesthetic inspired by the ancient palaces of Chiang Mai. The 18 Villas are luxuriously appointed and have spacious floor plans with private plunge pools, roomy terrace seating areas, fully equipped kitchens, and lavish bathrooms with outdoor rainfall showers and huge whirlpool tubs. Most villas feature unobstructed ocean views. Facilities include a multi-cuisine beachfront restaurant, a large outdoor swimming pool, a fitness center, and spa. Rom rates include yoga, cooking classes, Wi-Fi, and shuttles to Lamai. While this is one the area's prime luxury hotels, another nearby option worth exploring is the Le Meridien Koh Samui Resort & Spa -- though rates are higher.

Beluga Boutique Hotel
126/92 Moo 3

Beluga Boutique is a sharp boutique resort on an almost private cove at the southern end of Lamai Beach, right next to the popular Hin Ta Hin Yai rocks. This three-and-a-half-pearl, adult-only property has 14 rooms, which are contemporary and bright. Details matter here, and Standard Rooms have bathrooms built around boulders, while Front Seaview Rooms offer outstanding ocean views, iPod docks, and espresso machines. There's a mineral-water swimming pool next to the bar, and the resort sets up cabanas and stylish loungers all around the beach and rocks. The small restaurant here is one of Samui's best, with gourmet Thai and European haute cuisine. All of the contemporary glitz won't be everyone's cup of tea, and for something more ornate, consider Pavilion Samui Boutique Resort, which has similar rates.

Pavilion Samui Villas & Resort
124/24 Moo 3

Located right on Lamai Beach, one of Koh Samui's most popular destinations, Pavilion Samui Boutique Resort is a beach hotel surrounded by tropical gardens, with 89 modern rooms and villas, beachfront dining, a private pool, and a full-service spa. Lodgings are spacious and Thai-inflected, all with private patios and soaking tubs, and higher-tier villas with private plunge pools and beachfront views. Children are welcome and there are meeting rooms available, but the resort is predominantly popular with couples, who appreciate the romantic beachfront restaurant and poolside bar, as well as the in-room massages. It's worth noting that some rooms have been more recently renovated than others and that the restaurants and bars are pricey for the area.

Samui Beach Resort
124/11 Moo 3, Lamai Beach

There are 53 guest rooms at this two-pearl property set at the south end of Lamai Beach. It’s a fairly quiet area, but there are a few shops, restaurants, and bars nearby. The center of town and the night market will take 15 to 20 minutes to reach on foot. There are few features, but the hotel does offer a beachfront restaurant and bar, plus a swimming pool and free Wi-Fi. Rooms are basic and bright, though some are a bit beat up and not all have air-conditioning. The newest Sea View rooms are impressive, though, with glass balconies that overlook the pool and beach. Rates like this hotel's keep it popular, though it's also worth considering the Weekender Villa Beach Resort which has a few extra perks at similar rates.

Le Meridien Koh Samui Resort & Spa
146/24 Moo 4, Lamai Beach, Maret, Surat Thani

Those in search of a grand room with an even grander view can find one at this luxury boutique resort on the east coast of Koh Samui. The 14 villas and 63 suites are decorated with gorgeous Thai and Chinese style, and overlook the Gulf of Thailand or surrounding landscape. Expect lots of teak, gauzy drapery accents, soaking tubs and rainfall showers, sumptuous bedding, terraces, and (depending on the category) high-end extras such plunge pools. The resort's chic infinity pool has a lovely ocean view, and though the quiet beach on-site is a bit narrow, the resort offers free shuttles to the nicer Lamai and Chaweng beaches. The price is competitive given the level of luxury, but some prefer nearby Rocky's Boutique Resort, which is a tad cheaper and a tad less luxurious.

Silavadee Pool Spa Resort
208 / 66 Moo 4 Maret

Picturesquely set on the coast of Koh Samui, overlooking the vibrant ocean on a peninsula just outside lively Lamai, Silavadee Pool Spa Resort is a luxurious retreat of sprawling villas, jaw-dropping ocean views, fresh Thai cuisine, and bamboo-fringed calm. In addition to the hotel's private beach and two serene infinity pools, all villas have private pools, and even lower-tier rooms have private terraces or gardens with ocean views, an outdoor hot tub, or both. Rooms feel authentically Thai, with local hardwood furnishings, bamboo screens, and breezy mosquito netting. The free breakfast and Wednesday cocktail hour show off the two restaurants' -- and rooftop and poolside bars' -- fresh, flavorful Thai and international cuisine. The extensive, acclaimed spa similarly demonstrates an East-meets-West approach. It's worth noting that the Silavadee is located a five- to 10-minute drive from Lamai, but the hotel does offer a free shuttle there four times a day, as well as one to Chaweng twice a day.
