Haad Yao Bayview Resort & Spa
57 Moo 8, Koh Phangan, Haad Yao Beach

Haad Yao Bayview Resort & Spa is a value hotel located on the sleepy northwest coast of Koh Phangan. The 196 guest rooms range from no-frills Standard Rooms which lack balconies or views to wood-clad Bungalows with spacious balconies and ocean views. All rooms have air-conditioning, TVs, and mini-fridges, but amenities are dated and many past guests report issues with the air-conditioning. Also, the steep cliffside setting means challenging hikes between rooms and facilities. Although there is direct beach access, no lounge chairs are provided on the beach or around the pool. Facilities include two outdoor swimming pools, a multi-cuisine restaurant, a tour-desk, convenience store, and spa. Those who'd prefer to stay in a less isolated area, may want to consider the Palita Lodge at Haad Rin -- though rates are higher.

Sunset Hill Resort
81/15 Moo 8, Haad Chaophao

Perched on a hill with stunning ocean vistas, this upper-middle-range resort offers 46 contemporary rooms in a quiet area. All rooms come with flat-screen TVs and furnished balconies, plus most have living rooms and kitchenettes. Also overlooking the ocean, the attractive infinity pool has an adjacent pool bar and is a popular spot to catch the sunset. The restaurant serves Thai and western fare, including buffet-style breakfasts. Massage treatments and free rooftop yoga classes are available, but there's no gym. The location is peaceful but removed from restaurants, bars, and shops. Travelers wanting to be along the beach and walking distance from the Full Moon Party should look into the similarly priced Palita Lodge.

Koh Phangan Dreamland Resort
Thong Nai Pan Yai, 11 Moo 5

Koh Phangan Dreamland Resort is a rustic mid-range property located along the white-sand Thong Nai Pan Yai beach on the northeast coast of the island. The 62 wooden bungalows are traditional and basic, and it's worth upgrading to a unit with air-conditioning, a mini-fridge, and TV. All have attractive furnished terraces that overlook a garden. Limited features consist of a popular, attractive swimming pool overlooking a pretty lounger-equipped beach, an all-day restaurant serving Thai and international cuisines, and small market for alcohol and snacks. There are no gym or spa, but kayaks and snorkeling equipment are available. While the low rates are fair for the simple property, travelers wanting more modern digs should consider the Salad Buri Resort & Spa, which has pleasant rooms and free breakfast.

Cocohut Beach Resort & Spa
130/20 Moo 6

The three-pearl Cocohut Village Beach Resort & Spa is located on Leela Beach, the quieter side of Ko Pha Ngan, though it's still only a 10-minute walk from the famous Full Moon party beach. The 79 guest rooms range from villas to bungalows and feature fresh decor, along with flat-screen TVs, minibars, private balconies, and free Wi-Fi -- some units have hot tubs and plunge pools. There's a free buffet breakfast each morning as well as a full restaurant and two bars. Most of the areas are built to enjoy a sea view, including the swimming pool, some of the spa, and the fitness center. Travelers purely on the island for a party should consider Phangan Bayshore Resort which is located right on Sunrise Beach, though it comes with fewer features.

Kupu Kupu Phangan Beach Villas and Spa by l'Occitane
69/13, Moo 4, Nai Wok beach, Nai Wok beach

This upscale resort on the western shores of Ko Pha Ngan island offers 34 villas and suites, all with private plunge pools and lovely bathrooms with marble tubs. An attractive infinity-edge outdoor pool resides at the center of the property and offers gorgeous vistas over the sea -- especially at sunset. Notable features include the gorgeous L'Occitane spa, a poolside restaurant and bar, and a small beach (but it lacks loungers). The location is quiet and conveniently just a short drive into town and the ferry port. Downsides include slow Wi-Fi and a tiny fitness center. For something with a gorgeous stretch of beach, check out the upscale Buri Rasa Koh Phangan on the northeast coast of the island.

Milky Bay Resort
103/4 Moo 1, Ban Tai

The Milky Bay Resort is a three-pearl property with a serene beachside location and 39 rooms, apartments, and bungalows that vary in their modernity. While the beach is too shallow for swimming, the resort features a partly shaded swimming pool and sundeck with loungers. Two bars and a restaurant receive positive reviews, particularly for the barbecues, plus there are a massage hut, game area, and playground. Lodging options range from dated, options with minimal amenities, to elegant contemporary spaces with living rooms and oceanfront plunge pools. This is a great value, but travelers wanting to be in the center of the action might prefer Palita Lodge, which is located on Haad Rin Beach, close to where the Full Moon Party takes place.

The Sanctuary Thailand
Had Tien Bay

The Sanctuary Island Resort is dedicated to wellness, and offers several packages and programs that incorporate yoga, detox cleansing and fasting, natural-healing therapies, and meditation. Located on a remote beach on the east side of Koh Phangan, the Sanctuary is most easily reached by boat. Rooms are quirky, and many are open-air, incorporating rocks and trees right into their layouts. Guests need to have a certain level of comfort around seeing geckos, lizards, and bats, although some of the accommodations are glassed-in. There's a beachfront restaurant that serves seafood and vegetarian dishes. To encourage guest interaction, the resort requests that guests refrain from using electronic devices during dinner and throughout the evening. The higher-end rooms have satellite TV, DVD players, and at least partial air-conditioning -- no one is required to rough it.

Salad Buri Resort & Spa
60/2 Moo 8, Haad Salad

Set on the serene golden sands of Haad Salad Beach, the upper-middle-range Salad Buri Resort is a lovely property providing stunning views over the Gulf of Thailand. The 48 contemporary rooms are decorated with local flair, and have air-conditioning, minibars, flat-screen TVs, and outdoor spaces -- many with private hot tubs or pools and scenic vistas. Unfortunately, many are located up a steep hill and have finicky Wi-Fi. On-site features consist of an ocean-view infinity pool, spa that offers a variety of traditional Thai massages and wellness therapies, and restaurant serving Thai and international fare, including free breakfast. Travelers interested in a more lively vacation should consider Palita Lodge, which is close to the Full Moon Party and bars.

Thongtapan Resort
22 Moo 5, Thong Nai Pan Noi beach

Situated at the quiet end of Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach, the two-and-a-half-pearl Thongtapan Resort attracts low-key travelers looking for a budget-friendly oceanfront getaway. A large sandy beach with loungers and non-motorized water sports for rent allow guests to take advantage of the ocean. The beachfront restaurant receives positive reviews, particularly hot breakfasts that are included in some rates. The 30 rooms range from rustic spaces without air-conditioning or fridges to better-equipped villas with hammocks on their terraces. All units have free WI-Fi, private bathrooms, and fans. Some past guests have complained of rooms up on a hill being difficult to reach. Also be aware there are no pool, gym, or spa. Travelers heading to the Full Moon Party may prefer the more contemporary and amenity-packed Phangan Bayshore Resort.

Panviman Resort - Koh Pha Ngan
22/1 Moo 5 Thong Nai Pan Noi Bay, Bantai

The Panviman is one of four high-end resorts on gorgeous Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach, perhaps Koh Phangan's finest strip of sand, and it outshines the competition when it comes to location. The resort sits atop a hill at the west end of the beach and offers superb views of both Thong Nai Pan Noi and Thong Nai Pan Yai Bays and their beautiful beaches. A lookout point above the property not only gives the best panoramas around but also provides some possibilities for rock scrambling and hiking. Rooms here are large, and some have expansive terraces that overlook the sea, while others include outdoor whirlpools. Wood-paneled interiors are low-lit and dim, and the effect is subdued.
