The Inlet Sports Lodge
4600 Highway 17

The mid-range Inlet Sports Lodge is a homey boutique located near Murrells Inlet MarshWalk. The 34 studios and two-bedroom suites feature kitchens, sitting areas, and iHome docking stations. The hotel serves free breakfast and coffee daily, and a well-received seafood restaurant is located next door. For fisherman, there are free boat trailer parking and a fish-preparation area. There are also a seasonal outdoor pool, a handsome Clubroom for meetings, and a third-floor widow’s walk with sunset vistas. There's not much for kids to do here, so families should check out the beachfront Caravelle Resort, which has a kiddy water park and lazy river pool.

The Palms Oceanfront Hotel
1126 Ocean Blvd

The Palms Oceanfront Hotel is a 68-room, beachside budget property located on the Isle of Palms, about 25 minutes outside of Charleston. Although there are a few restaurants within walking distance, there aren’t many other tourist attractions nearby besides the beach. Balconies that face the ocean have great water views, but all rooms could use an upgrade.

Wild Dunes Resort
1 Sundial Circle

The four-pearl Wild Dunes Resort is a huge 458-room property located on the beach in a gated community at the end of the Isle of Palms. Accommodations are divided between an inn, a village-style area, and rental condos, cottages, and vacation homes. All are attractive, decorated in contemporary beach decor, plus outfitted with flat-screen TVs, fridges, and coffeemakers. Features are outstanding and include multiple pools, a 36-hole golf course, and nationally ranked tennis courts. There are also several restaurant and bar options, including Southern cuisine and an oceanfront grill. For a less sprawling stay, consider the 132-room Tides Foley Beach, located a 20-minute drive from downtown.

Seaside Inn
1004 Ocean Blvd

Just 20 minutes from downtown Charleston, the Seaside Inn is a two-and-a-half pearl hotel on the beach near other reasonably priced, relaxed properties. There are microwaves and mini-fridges in the 50 rooms and views of the sea from some units. But some guests complain of a musty smell in the rooms (common in coastal areas of high humidity). The three-story property has limited amenities, but for couples or families with older children for whom the beach is the goal, the Seaside Inn strikes the right notes of location and practicality. Travelers may want to compare rates and amenities at the Palms Oceanfront Hotel

The Oceanfront Litchfield Inn
1 Norris Dr, at Litchfield Boulevard

The three-pearl Oceanfront Litchfield Inn is a beachfront property that mostly attracts families and couples who want an extended stay beach getaway. Apart from the beach, there are several restaurants and beach shops within a 10-minute walk. The 100 rooms are individually decorated, so some are more dated than others. However, they all have mini-fridges and microwaves, and some include kitchenettes, balconies, or ocean views. There are two outdoor pools, a pool bar, Austin’s Ocean One restaurant, and a simple cold breakfast. Drawbacks include a resort fee to cover Wi-Fi, breakfast, and parking, varying reports on Wi-Fi connectivity, and no gym. Travelers could also consider the Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort which has golf courses, a gym, and indoor pools.

Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort

Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort is a sprawling 589-room, mid-range resort located on an uninterrupted stretch of sand on the Atlantic Ocean. Rooms range from studios to whole houses with kitchens, but decor varies (some accommodations could use an update). Some buildings are within walking distance to the beach, while others are a half mile away and may require use of the hotel’s free beach shuttle.

Surfside Beach Oceanfront Hotel
15 S Ocean Blvd

Location is perhaps the biggest draw of this mid-range 160-room hotel, which was once a Days Inn and has undergone renovations during the past year. It is situated directly on the sand in Surfside Beach, a smaller enclave about eight-and-a-half miles south of Myrtle beach, which is rife with restaurants, bars, surf shacks, and small shops. The hotel does not have a great number of amenities apart from a small pool and hot tub, but guests have free access to the nearby Surfside Pier for fishing and dining. Renovated rooms generally get high marks from guests for cleanliness, and all rooms have free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges. Many rooms have balconies, though views are not directly onto the beach.

Holiday Inn Oceanfront at Surfside Beach
1601 N Ocean Blvd

The 133-room Holiday Inn Oceanfront at Surfside Beach is a mid-range, pet-friendly hotel on the beach, with several attractions less than 15 minutes away.
