Montage Palmetto Bluff
477 Mount Pelia Rd

This sprawling estate in Carolina Lowcountry provides a one-of-a-kind experience that uniquely blends southern history and almost otherworldly natural beauty: rivers, misty marshes, old oaks draped with wispy Spanish moss, and salty breezes. The main hotel building looks like a classic southern mansion, and the 50 Cottages and Cottage Suites are simultaneously homey and utterly luxurious, with working fireplaces, screen porches, and gorgeous bathrooms. The multi-bedroom Village Homes are also luxurious, but lack some of the nuances of the cottages. Guests can enjoy a range of recreational facilities, including golf, bicycling, tennis, croquet, kayaking, and swimming (in the two pools), and the luxury spa is highly acclaimed. It's not an overstatement to say that the Montage Palmetto Bluff is one of the most special properties in the entire country.

Fripp Island Resort
300 Tarpon Blvd

Fripp Island Resort is a residential vacation resort and membership club on a private island on South Carolina’s coast with a variety of homes, villas, and cottages available for rent. The four-pearl resort has plenty for families to do with several swimming pools, golf courses, and a tennis club. There’s also an activity center and a summer camp for children offering daily activities. Varied dining options include seafood, a pizzeria, and several bars, though off-season prices are high and the food gets mixed reviews. Guests complain that more attention could be paid to the cleanliness of some of the residences, but the houses we saw were clean and cheery, with plenty of indoor and outdoor areas to relax. The remote location means that the nearest town of Beaufort is about a half-hour drive away, which makes this property suitable for those seeking a tranquil, nature-filled getaway or extended break.

Tides Folly Beach
1 Center Street

Tides Folly Beach is a solid mid-range hotel with an excellent waterfront location between Center Street and Folly Beach Pier. Its 132 rooms can accommodate two to four guests and are spacious with beachy decor, though some guests complain of wear-and-tear. Amenities include mini-fridges and coffeemakers with Starbucks coffee. Helpful on-site facilities include a full-service restaurant with lounge and dining space, indoor and outdoor bars, room service all day, and a cafe selling Starbucks coffee, light snacks, and souvenirs. The outdoor pool isn’t fancy, but it’s heated and open year-round. The fitness center is underwhelming, but has a handful of cardio machines and free weights. Guests complain about the extra fees attached to breakfast and umbrella and beach chair rentals, but Wi-Fi and parking are free. For a more intimate bed-and-breakfast feel consider Regatta Inn.

The Westin Poinsett, Greenville
120 South Main Street

The four-pearl Westin Poinsett, Greenville delivers a memorable stay in a historic setting in the heart of downtown Greenville. Housed in an iconic Poinsett building that has been a hotel since 1925, the Westin features a spectacular grand lobby. The pet-friendly property offers many modern amenities including good Southern restaurants, concierge service, spacious fitness center, free Wi-Fi and airport shuttle, and popular event space for up to 1,000 people. Its 200 spacious rooms and suites are clean, traditionally decorated, and well outfitted with mini-fridges, coffeemakers,  and robes. But, rates don’t include parking or breakfast. The Hyatt Regency Greenville is centrally located downtown in a modern hotel that often has lower rates and unlike the Westin, it has a pool.

Kiawah Island Golf Resort
1 Sanctuary Beach Dr

Located just south of Charleston, South Carolina, the Kiawah Island Golf Resort is an eco-friendly luxury resort along 10 miles of pristine beach. There are five championship golf courses, pools with water slides, and an on-site nature center (with birds, snakes, and alligators) within this resort, occupying most of the 10,000 acres of the island. Rooms range from one bedroom options to whole house rentals, some of which are at The Sanctuary hotel. The property is packed with features -- a spa, bike rentals, fitness center, markets, restaurants -- but some guests complain about expensive food and a crowded feel during peak season.

The Sanctuary Hotel at Kiawah Island Golf Resort
1 Sanctuary Beach Dr

This large seaside resort and golf course provides an opulent getaway in the style of a historical southern estate. It is situated on Kiawah, a barrier island 15 miles south of Charleston, South Carolina. The 90-hole golf course attracts a large number of sports enthusiasts, many of whom bring their families along. The resort offers elegant hotel rooms, independent villas, and freestanding rental homes. There are a large number of creative family activities and events organized specifically for teens.

Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort
6800 E Soaring Eagle Blvd

The 516-room Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort is an expansive casino resort located in a rural area four miles outside of Mount Pleasant, Michigan. This southwestern themed resort has a big casino with slot machines and casino games along with a game room for kids, babysitting service, a large indoor pool with adjacent hot tub, and a spa. The rooms are spacious and pleasant, if a touch dated, though some include nice extras such as fireplaces and whirlpool soaking tubs. Some guests complain of lingering smoke smells, old slot machines, and private events taking over amenities such as the pool. The property tends to attract a senior crowd.

Hampton Inn Charleston/Mt. Pleasant-Patriots Point
255 Sessions Way

This 120-room chain hotel offers basic accommodations, with warm color schemes and dark wood furnishings that include full-wall armoires with built-in desks. Some rooms are showing signs of wear, however, with scuffed furniture and mildewed shower heads. The hotel's location in Mount Pleasant puts downtown areas just out of walking distance and a car will probably be necessary. But if you're up for the extra effort, it'll most likely save you a buck or two between the less expensive nightly rates and the free parking.
