Angkor Pearl Hotel
Tapoul Village

Set just off of central Siem Reap, this a small, 45-room hotel offers easy access to the area's restaurants, bars, and shops. It's a quick 10-minute walk from the Old Market and happening Pub Street and a 10- to 15-minute drive to both the temples at Angkor Wat and the airport. Mid-range rooms have a few decorative flourishes (carved wooden doors, attractive photographs), but they're nothing fancy. Old phones and tube TVs are showing their age, but free breakfast and free Wi-Fi are welcome touches. Facilities are sparse here aside from the hotel restaurant, but that does feature a pleasant terrace to eat alfresco. While the hotel certainly isn't upscale, it's a decent value compared to its neighbors. (The mid-range Golden Temple Villa can be significantly more expensive.)

MotherHome Guesthouse
Wat Bo Street, Wat Bo Village, Slor Kram Commune

MotherHome Guesthouse is one of three properties owned by MotherHome, and it is the most basic of the trio. Aimed at budget travelers, there are 26 basic rooms here that are simply decorated and include mini-fridges and flat-screen TVs. Breakfast is free, as is Wi-Fi. While the hotel is a 15-minute walk to Pub Street, there are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby on the east side of the Siem Reap River. Unlike the other MotherHome hotels, there is no pool, just a small restaurant and a massage room. The hotel is a decent value for Siem Reap, and is in a quiet spot, but travelers wanting an even easier walk to Pub Street should investigate the budget-friendly and colorful Golden Butterfly Villa.

Tanei Boutique Villa
017 Steung Thmey Village, Svaydangkum Commune

Perhaps a name change would be in order here -- in actuality this two-pearl "boutique villa" is a guesthouse aimed at the budget market, located only a seven-minute walk from downtown Siem Reap and Pub Street. There are 32 rooms spread between two buildings -- each includes modern Khmer touches like local textiles, though at core, the rooms area basic. Standard in-room features include air-conditioning, mini-bars, TVs, electric hot water kettles (with free tea and coffee downstairs). Wi-Fi and breakfast are free. There's a small swimming pool here, a garden area for sitting, plus a cute little restaurant. MotherHome Guesthouse offers better rates and rooms that have a bit more charm, though walks to Pub Street will take 15 minutes from there.

Bunwin Boutique Hotel
National 06, Phum Banteay Chas

Bunwin Boutique Hotel is a charming upper-middle-range property that's a short drive from the lively center of Siem Reap. Spacious, contemporary rooms have open-floor plans, Khmer artwork, romantic in-room bathtubs, and rainfall showers in the bathrooms. The garden pool is long enough for short laps, and there is a small spa and a quaint restaurant serving free breakfast plus a poolside bar. Freebies include airport transfers and tuk-tuks to and from the center of town. With its quiet and peaceful setting and art-filled interiors, it's hard to beat the Bunwin, but travelers who can spend a little more money and want an upscale option with an emphasis on wellness should investigate Navutu Dreams Resort & Spa

Lotus Blanc Resort
National Road 6, Kruos Village

Opened in 2007, the upscale Lotus Blanc is newer than many area hotels, and the rooms and public spaces are attractive and modern. Lotus ponds and staff in traditional garb add to the ambience of this mid-sized hotel, but the expansive lobby can feel cold and impersonal. Contemporary rooms are in good shape and include gleaming hardwood floors, sofas, and writing desks. Most include balconies. The main issue is the hotel's location: It's not within walking distance of the popular tourist hangouts downtown, so guests need to rely on tuk-tuk taxis to get around. (Although the hotel is on the national road, close to the airport.) Thankfully, there are plenty of diversions on-site, including Lotus Blanc's large swimming pool, a fitness center and spa, an elegant fine-dining restaurant overlooking the pool, plus a breakfast buffet restaurant and several bars. It's fairly priced, compared to other properties in this pearl rating. However many of those other resorts have locations closer to all the big attractions of the main tourist area.

Diamond D'Angkor Boutique
Road 50 , Group 08, Sang Kat Svay Dangkom

Set back from the road in a pretty white building that conjures Grecian getaways, this intimate, 19-room hotel is wonderfully located in walking distance to the main tourist area, but away from all that noise and clamor. Pub Street and the Old Market are a 10- to 15-minute walk away, but Sok San Road, where the hotel sits, has plenty of restaurants, shops, and traffic on it as well. Rooms have polished hardwood floors, slat-wood furniture, and small balconies or terraces. Amenities include flatscreen TVs, minibars, safes, and free Wi-Fi, as expected in mid-range hotels. The higher category rooms have espresso machines, too. While the hotel's stand-alone rates aren’t a tremendous bargain, its packages that include a tuk tuk driver, breakfast and diner, and a few other perks, are a good value.

Heritage Suites Hotel
Wat Polanka, Slokram Village

The Heritage Suites is a small boutique hotel with only 26 rooms that have fine wood floors and premium linen, along with espresso machines. The various suites also offered here feature outdoor showers in stone gardens, plus steam rooms and roll-top tubs in each open-plan bedroom. The hotel sits off a dusty road outside the town center, but it is away from the tourists and feels very local, not to mention its location also makes it closer to the temples of Angkor than other hotels. While reaching the restaurants and bars of Pub Street downtown require a tuk tuk ride, there are local restaurants in the neighborhood and it is quiet here. The Heritage Suites also has its own restaurant and bar offering fine dining, and there is a small spa and inviting swimming pool on the premises as well. While the standard rooms are slightly subpar compared to other upmarket spots like Shinta Mani or the Victoria Angkor, the suites at Heritage offer numerous amenities -- but come at prices that reflect this.

Angkor Paradise Hotel
National Road No. 6, Phum Sala Kanseng, Sangkat Svay Dangkoum

The three-pearl Angkor Paradise is a resort-style hotel located on National Road 6, close to Siem Reap’s tourist center. The hotel's large pool is certainly a big draw, and it's surrounded by comfy day beds for downtime between exploring temples. Other facilities -- like the all-day restaurant and spa -- have a more functional vibe. The 169 spacious rooms are classically outfitted, with amenities like air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, balconies, and bathrooms with separate tubs and showers. However, as an older hotel there are some signs of wear and the decor is dated. It offers good value for its standard, but a sleeker stay can be found at the Angkor Palace Resort & Spa, though it’s further from the center and rates are higher.

Shinta Mani Angkor
Oum Khun Street, 14th Street

The Shinta Mani Club is one of the most unique hotels in Cambodia. The small boutique hotel, designed by renowned architect Bill Bensley, has only 39 rooms, all of which are super stylish, with features such as art etchings on the ceilings above the beds, minimalist black-and-white decor, and terrazzo bathrooms with rainfall showers. The hotel is located on a quiet street in central Siem Reap, a 10-minute walk from Pub Street and the Old Market, and there is easy access to Angkor Wat and the airport, both a 15-minute drive away. The resort features a small swimming pool, pool bar with creative sculptures and bean bag pillows, movie room, spa, and the swank Bensley Bar and upscale Kroya Restaurant with hanging tables. Since the hotel is part of the Shinta Mani Foundation, staff here come from a grassroots hospitality school where training is free, and the service here rivals, and even bests, the top five-star hotels anywhere in the world. The only drawback of this property is the price -- and its lack of a fitness center.

Suorkear Boutique Hotel & Spa
Salakamreouk Village

Suorkear Boutique Hotel & Spa is a small, upper-middle-range resort with just 15 rooms. It sits on a quiet road that's an eight-minute drive from the center of Siem Reap. Other than a few other boutique hotels, there's not much else in the area, but the resort provides free tuk-tuks into town upon request. Clean, contemporary guest rooms are clustered around a garden swimming pool and have private balconies or garden patios. A host of nice freebies include airport transfers, bicycles, breakfast, and Wi-Fi. The hotel also has a small spa, a sharp pool, plus an open-air restaurant and bar that serves Khmer and Western food. Travelers seeking an equally sharp option closer to town might want to check out the Memoire d' Angkor Boutique Hotel, though rates will be higher.
