Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi
113 Washington Ave

The 58-room Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi is a luxury boutique in the heart of Santa Fe, steps from shops and galleries in the central plaza. It is a gorgeous place with rich decor and artwork reflective of the history of Santa Fe. Rooms are just as elegant, featuring Southwestern decor, sleek bathrooms, and modern amenities like minibars, iPod docks, and 46-inch flat-screen TVs. Turndown service, valet parking (with a fee), and excellent services for families add to the high-end experience. Food at the on-site restaurant is delicious, and room service is available. There are no pool or spa, though in-room massages are available. It's worth considering The Inn and Spa at Loretto for a lovely alternative at a lower price.

Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe
198 State Road 592

The 5-pearl, 65-room Rancho Encantado sits in a secluded spot a few miles north of Santa Fe with great views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Big, luxurious rooms are decorated in a modern Southwestern style, featuring concrete and wood floors, Native American-style rugs, and a color scheme or warm browns and oranges, as well as high-end extras such as radiant floor heating, wood-burning fireplaces, and private patios. The fine dining at Terra restaurant is rated highly, and the resort also features an outdoor seasonal pool, Jacuzzi, luxury spa, and even free rentals of a Mercedes Benz for the day. But some guests have complained of noise in first-floor rooms from second-floor foot traffic, and though the location is beautiful, it's a 20-minute drive from Santa Fe Plaza, the city's shopping and cultural center.

Old Santa Fe Inn

This 57-room, mid-range hotel is in high demand thanks to a desirable location near Santa Fe’s popular downtown area. Add in charming Southwestern decor in common areas, comfortable rooms, and a few nice freebies, for one of the best values in town. Attractive rooms have flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and safes, and many add mini-fridges, microwaves, and fireplaces. Some rooms have a whirlpool tub. Free extras include a delicious breakfast buffet with a burrito bar, Starbucks coffee, parking, Wi-Fi, a small gym, and afternoon snacks of cookies or chips and guacamole. La Posada de Santa Fe offers a wider range of features -- including restaurants, a heated pool, and a spa -- but it lacks the homey charm of Old Santa Fe Inn.

Anika Island Resort
F. Roska Street, Barangay Okoy

Anika Island Resort is a budget-friendly beach getaway with 30 rooms fashioned from shipping containers. Rooms themselves are nothing special, though they do have flat-screen TVs and air-conditioning, and higher-category rooms add mini-fridges. Amenities are focused on tourists, with a play structure for kids, loungers along the sand, and a restaurant that serves hot items at breakfast plus local cuisine (including freshly caught seafood) throughout the day. While there's no swimming pool, the waters at the white-sand beach are calm and ideal for swimming. It's overall a decent choice for families traveling on a budget, though the Kota Beach Resort offers similar facilities at a lower rate.

Inn and Spa at Loretto

With an unbeatable location by the Plaza, this upscale property has a long-standing reputation as one of the top inns in Santa Fe. Classic southwestern is found throughout the property, from the cozy lounge to the 136 warm and earthy rooms and suites, which come with armchairs and coffeemakers, and, in some, balconies and kiva-style fireplaces. Hotel highlights include the stylish Luminaria, renowned for its fresh, organic cuisine; The Spa at Loretto, popular for its organic and Native American-inspired treatments; and the historic Gothic Revival Loretto Chapel, which adjoins the hotel. The upscale Inn of the Five Graces offers a similarly fantastic downtown location and southwestern vibe, but it lacks Loretto's spa and pool, and rates can be significantly higher.

Villas de Santa Fe

The mid-range Villas de Santa Fe is sought after for its proximity to Santa Fe Plaza and convenience of its apartments, despite limited facilities and underwhelming decor. The 105 rooms are all apartments featuring living spaces, flat-screen TVs with DVD players, and full kitchens that include microwaves, coffeemakers, and dishwashers. Wi-Fi is provided as part of the daily resort fee. Two hot tubs and a pool offer space to relax, and there are community barbecue grills to aid in cooking larger meals -- helpful, since rooms lack ovens. Compare rates with Hotel Chimayo de Santa Fe, which is steps from the plaza and has charming decor, but no pool or fitness center.

Fairmont Heritage Place, El Corazon de Santa Fe

SINCE OUR VISIT, THE RESIDENCE CLUB AT EL CORAZON RE-OPENED AS THE FAIRMONT HERITAGE PLACE, EL CORAZON DE SANTA FE. The Residence Club at El Corazon is a collection of shared-ownership vacation homes in a gated community -- an elegant, fully equipped sanctum just two blocks from the Plaza. The luxurious and spacious two-bedroom condos contain every convenience of home and are furnished with the most modern appliances and gorgeous furniture. Since these are essentially private homes, there is no restaurant, spa, or pool on-site, but these amenities are available at partner businesses.

Silver Saddle Motel

The 17-room Silver Saddle Motel provides an economy roadside vacation with Southwestern touches, cowboy decor, free Wi-Fi, and on-site parking. The motel offers a gift shop, free continental breakfast, and an outdoor dining patio along with picnic areas. Rooms are named after Western characters and feature kitschy style (think: cowboy hats on the walls and patterned quilts on the beds), flat-screen TVs, and, in some cases, kitchenettes -- but this is a motel, so expect some datedness. The nearby El Rey Inn, which offers more hotel frills and rooms with fireplaces, is another option.

Inn of the Turquoise Bear

Inn of the Turquoise Bear is a romantic desert oasis that’s rich in history with a central Old Santa Fe Trail location. Attracting mostly couples, the bed-and-breakfast is a national historic site and features charming adobe designs, one acre of pueblo courtyards, and an elegant dining room. The 11 rooms have unique Southwestern designs, kiva fireplaces, private patios, and flat-screen TVs. But a few guests complain that some bathrooms, which feature outdated furnishings, are in need of renovations.

The Parador

The 200-year-old El Paradero Bed and Breakfast Inn offers a setting that’s historic and charming, appealing to couples looking for a Southwestern romantic retreat. Cozy folk art decorates sitting rooms, adobe garden terraces, and a lovely breakfast room that features a kiva fireplace. The 15 colorful and thoughtfully designed rooms here feature Santa Fe decor, with suites offering kitchenettes. Still, most spaces don’t have TVs and some can feel small. More spacious rooms with TVs can be found at the nearby (and slightly pricier) Inn of the Turquoise Bear.
