Hotel Santa Costanza
Viale Ventuno Aprile 4

Located in a more relaxed, residential neighborhood north of the city center, not far from Mussolini's villa (now a museum), the 74-room Hotel Santa Costanza is a mid-range, pet-friendly hotel with all the requisite modern amenities. Classic and rather basic rooms have hardwood floors, flat-screen TVs, and air-conditioning, as well as marble bathrooms; some have small private balconies overlooking the city or with garden views, but many also have thin walls that result in loud hallway noise traveling into rooms. Breakfast is included in all rates and there is a lobby bar, but the hotel lacks a full restaurant. There's a small internet corner in the lobby, and free Wi-Fi throughout. There are nearby bus and metro stops, but most major attractions are approximately a 20-minute drive away. There is no on-site parking; guests must use a local lot with a fee.

Hotel Petra
Via Sante Vandi 78

The 10-room, family-friendly Hotel Petra is a somewhat dated hotel that's located in Tor Vergata, about 25 minutes away from Rome's city center. Large guest rooms have furnished private balconies, flat-screen TVs, and minibars, and some rooms also have living rooms and scenic views from the terraces, though the overall decor is boring and bland. A free shuttle is provided to the local metro station and malls, and there is free Wi-Fi and parking. A basic in-room breakfast is included, as well. Outside, there's a sprawling garden filled with olive trees, as well as a tennis court/soccer field with a seating area. There is no business center, breakfast room, or common areas at this mid-range hotel.

Hotel Imperiale Roma
Via Vittorio Veneto 24

The upscale Hotel Imperiale is set in a 1895 building that retains much of its classic style inside and out. The location is excellent, near luxury shops, restaurants, and the metro, and in walking distance to many Rome attractions. There's a conservatory-style Italian restaurant, a big breakfast buffet, and a small bar, plus a mosaic-tiled spa with a sauna, hammam, and jacuzzi (but no gym). The hotel's 95 rooms range from Singles to Quads and Suites, and feature hardwood floors and marble bathrooms, plus upscale extras like bidets and minibars, though rooms are small and decor doesn't feel quite as swanky as what's found in the common areas. As an alternative, the Barocco Hotel nearby offers more refined room decor, but it lacks the extra features of Hotel Imperiale.

Hotel Atlante Star
Via Giovanni Vitelleschi n. 34

Hotel Atlante Star is a three-pearl hotel in the Prati district, in a great location near the Sistine Chapel and other Vatican attractions. Some of its smallish 85 rooms have traditional decor that look tired and could use an update, while others are contemporary and fresh. All contain flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi, but they don't have electric kettles and coffeemakers. Property highlights include a free hot-and-cold breakfast buffet and an on-site Italian restaurant. The hotel's rooftop terrace offers superb, unobstructed views of the surrounding area and St. Peter's, and dining alfresco in warm weather is a major perk. The nearby Adriatic Hotel is a cheaper alternative, though it lacks breakfast service and a restaurant.

Hotel Mascagni

Hotel Mascagni is a smart choice for solid accommodations near Piazza della Repubblica. The upper-middle-range hotel has attractive, modern public spaces and in 2016 the hotel opened an annex to house 40 polished rooms. However, the orange striped wallpaper and matching drapes are garish. All units are well-equipped with flat-screen TVs, minibars, electric kettles with free tea and coffee, and free Wi-Fi; some have balconies. Bathrooms are far more stylish, and come with bidets, a generous supply of toiletries, and shower/tub combos in most. Features here are limited to an elegant breakfast room, where a hot spread is served daily, and a small, handsome bar. As an alternative, the nearby Ambasciatori Palace Hotel has slightly higher rates and features a full-service restaurant.

Hotel Farnese

The 23-room Hotel Farnese is a pleasant mid-range option situated in Prati, a one-minute walk from the metro and 15 minutes on foot from Vatican City. Like the rest of the hotel, rooms and suites are mostly decorated in a classical style and generally feature fine antique furniture, rich fabrics, and period detailing. They also are equipped with modern amenities, including air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, stocked minibars, and free Wi-Fi. Some have furnished terraces, but keep in mind that lower-category units can look a bit plain. The free breakfast buffet is served in a lovely rooftop breakfast room with views of the city, including St. Peter's Basilica. Travelers who'd prefer a more modern setting in the area could check out the colorful tango-themed Tango Hotel, which has its own dance studio.

Hotel Hiberia
Via XXIV Maggio, 8

The 42-room Hiberia Hotel is a two-and-a-half-pearl option with an excellent location in the historic center of Rome. Numerous restaurants, bars, shops, and major attractions are within walking distance, and the bus and train stations are nearby as well. Traditionally styled rooms and suites all feature air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and minibars, but some are cramped (as are bathrooms). Suites offer more space, and some have furnished terraces with nice city views. All could use a little updating, however. A free breakfast buffet with hot and cold items is served daily, and there's a little bar in the lobby as well. With its prime location and reasonable rates, this place stays filled much of the time. For rooms that are a bit more attractive, check out the Comfort Hotel Bolivar instead.

Hotel Dorica

The 23-room Hotel Dorica is a two-pearl option with a convenient location in the historic center of Rome. Several major attractions, including the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, and Colosseum, are within a 15-minute walk, as is the main train station. It's a busy part of the city, and there are numerous places to dine and drink all around. Rooms are tired and dated, but clean, and come with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Mini-fridges are available on request. Some have balconies with nice views of the square across the road. A breakfast buffet is optional, and a simple bar serves drinks throughout the day and evening. For a slightly more modern property in the same area, it's worth considering SuiteDreams Hotel instead, which is only a bit more expensive.

Hotel Viminale
Via Cesare Balbo 31

The 53-room Hotel Viminale is a mid-range hotel in an historic building just around the corner from the iconic Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, in the heart of Rome. Traditional rooms have laminate wood floors, a classical aesthetic, and modern inclusions like minibars, air-conditioning, and flat-screen TVs. Bathrooms look a bit dated, with shower stalls and no tubs, and some guests complain that the rooms are dusty. The free daily breakfast gets mixed reviews. There's a plant-lined roof garden with seating areas, plus two terraces with overlooking the city. Wi-Fi is free, but there's no parking. Hotel Anahi is around the same price, but has fresher rooms.

Hotel San Remo
80 Corso Imperatrice Sanremo Sanremo

The 78-room Hotel San Remo is a mid-range property in a historic building on a pretty, narrow street with many sights within a 15-minute walking radius. Basic rooms have just the essentials, including minibars, flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and safes. Bathrooms are on the small side with shower/tub combos, but some have a bit of rust on the sinks. Breakfast is included and receives decent reviews, and there's a spacious lobby bar with a selection of drinks. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout. The decor though, is a bit dated with cracks and chipped paint on the walls and worn, traditional furniture in the common areas.
