Hotel Lunetta

Although its 30 rooms are somewhat small, the four-pearl Hotel Lunetta is one of Rome’s most historic and charming hotels. Situated in the historic center, it offers tremendous views from the small rooftop bar, and an underground spa with a foundation that dates back to 55 B.C. Guest rooms have hardwood floors and exposed beams, and stocked minibars. An ample breakfast buffet is included in the price of a room. The hotel is ideal for romantic tourists with money to spare, who don't mind compact rooms, and who appreciate staying within ancient walls more than they do amenities like lobby lounges and full-service restaurants found in other upscale properties.

Relais Castrum Boccea
Via SS. Mario e Marta 27

Part of a restored medieval hamlet, the  Relais Castrum Boccea is  set in the middle of some truly picturesque Italian countryside -- about an hour from Rome. It has 31 rooms and suites, and wood-beamed ceilings and stone archways predominate its decor. Some suites have hot tubs for two. Standard Rooms are simpler, although they still have entryways and sleeping areas are set off. Rates for these rooms are pretty low. Walls between rooms, though, are thin, and guests have complained about noise from their neighbors. There's two restaurants on the property, one focusing on Italian fare and the other on grilled meats and wines from its cellar, as well as a bar and breakfast room.

Kolbe Hotel Rome
Via San Teodoro, 48

The 72-room Kolbe Hotel Rome is a quiet property housed in a former 15th-century convent. The location is central and convenient to buses, trams, and the local metro station -- plus the Roman Forum is right beyond the hotel's doors. Original architecture, such as brick archways in the bright lobby, is a charming feature. There is a beautiful garden scented by lemon and olive trees, along with a bright bar/dining room (where free breakfast is served) and panoramic terrace with views of Palatine Hill. Rooms are spacious and airy -- with some dated touches such as red bedspreads -- but bathrooms in some are small with tiny showers. Room upgrades translate to more square footage and bathrooms with soaking tubs. One historic alternative is the Relais Orso, set in a converted 17th-century townhouse.

Gambrinus Hotel

The 57-room boutique Gambrinus Hotel is a restored 18th-century palace. The lobby, with its Roman marble floors and ornate Murano glass sconces and centerpiece chandelier, exudes elegance. Rooms, including suites, with  red, beige, green, or yellow striped wallpaper, are pleasant enough, but nicks on the furniture and bathroom soap that comes in liquid dispensers detract from the elegance. While Wi-Fi is free, the connection is sluggish. The location is a bit inconvenient, as not many sights (aside from the Villa Borghese and Via Veneto) are within easy walking distance. There is a bus stop right outside the door, though, and Termini Railway Station is a 15-minute walk. The similarly priced Moses Fountain Hotel and Hotel Rex are slightly more central.

All Time Relais & Sport Hotel
Viale Don Pasquino Borghi 100

The All Time Relais & Sport Hotel is an upscale, 69-room property with a smart, contemporary look located in the southern suburbs of Rome. Its sports, fitness, and relaxation facilities are considered among the best in Rome, although there's not much in the surrounding area and location is far outside the city center. Rooms are sleek, modern, and clean -- if lacking in coziness. Wi-Fi is free, as are the minibars, breakfast, and entry to the extensive health, spa, and sports facility on-site.

Pinewood Hotel
Via della Pineta Sacchetti 43

The Pinewood Hotel is a dated value hotel with a location considerably far from central Rome for tourists looking to explore, but perhaps a good match for anyone needing to stay near the Policlinico Gemelli hospital and university. There are bus stops in front of the hotel, but the historic center is not reached easily. A hotel since 1966, some spaces of this property were renovated during a change in ownership in 2003, but overall much of the hotel is dated with worn furniture. There is a nice outdoor terrace and simple breakfast room, where a buffet is served each morning. For leisure travelers, the Hotel NH Roma Villa Carpegna is a good option much closer to the historic center of Rome.

Hotel Ponte Sisto

The upper-middle-range Hotel Ponte Sisto’s location, smack in the heart of historic Rome, is just one reason to book a stay. The 103 rooms are comfortable and spacious by Roman standards, though TVs are small and guests can't control the room temperature. A beautiful rooftop terrace and elegant interior courtyard are both tranquil and atmospheric. This hotel is ideal for couples, families, and -- with meeting rooms and a work station -- a good choice for business travelers wanting a departure from corporate uniformity. Breakfast, including delectable pastries, is free, along with Wi-Fi. One major downside is the lack of a restaurant.

Hotel delle Nazioni

Hotel delle Nazioni is located in a historic building in the heart of Rome's cultural, commercial, and political arenas, near famous sights like the Trevi Fountain, Piazza di Spagna, and Palazzo Monetcitorio. The simple rooms have small flat-screen TVs and small, but modern, bathrooms. There is also an on-site restaurant, Le Grondici, that serves Mediterranean and local cuisine. In the mornings, there's a free breakfast buffet. Both business travelers and families stay here, although -- besides the restaurant and two meeting rooms -- amenities are few.

Althea Inn Roof Terrace
Via Dei Conciatori 9

Among the best value bed-and-breakfastproperties in Rome, the Althea Inn is not exactly an easy walk from Rome’s main attractions, but it is situated in the Testaccio district, an area saturated with some of city’s most revered restaurants and clubs. Conveniently, the Metro is a five-minute walk from the inn, and the Colosseum is just a couple of stops away. Although there are only three guest rooms, each is clean and spacious, with a private bathroom and breezy balcony. A simple daily breakfast is included, and served in guest rooms. Don't expect any communal areas or an on-site restaurant.

Bailey`s Hotel
Via Flavia 39

The intimate, mid-range Bailey's Hotel is located in central Rome in the prestigious Via Veneto, near shops and restaurants. The Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and the Termini Station are all within a 15-minutes walk away. The historical building has 29 rooms of varying sizes, all decorated in a sophisticated and simple style with flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges. Wi-Fi and a buffet breakfast are included in room rates, but there's no business center or restaurant on-site.
