Villa San Lorenzo Maria Hotel
Via dei Liguri 7

This charming, upper-mid-range property is a former private residence that was originally built in 1910. It's located in the San Lorenzo neighborhood of Rome, next to a university, so the area is very young and lively and has many restaurants, pubs, and bars. Removed from the city center, the hotel isn't within walking distance to the main monuments but is just a short drive away. The 39 guest rooms are elegant and decorated in Baroque style with private balconies.****

c-hotels Club House
Via Andrea Alciato 14/16

This small hotel is in a residential neighborhood outside central Rome, close to the city's major clinics and hospitals. It's geared toward unfussy budget travelers who don’t mind taking public transportation to visit the city's major sights. It does not have a fitness room or a pool, but the sleek red bar, while a little out of character, is a nice touch.

Hotel Villa San Pio
Via di Santa Melania 19

Spread out over three 19th-century buildings, the Hotel Villa San Pio in south central Rome is a quiet three-pearl property in the residential neighborhood of Aventine Hill. Many of the hotel's 77 rooms have high ceilings and big windows with beautiful views, although some may find their traditional style too fussy. Features include a bar with a stone-vaulted ceiling, in-room massages, and free breakfast. For another pretty but slightly less expensive hotel in the same neighborhood, travelers might want to consider the Hotel Aventino.

Hotel Giuliana
Via Agostino Depretis 70

The 11-room Hotel Giuliana is a basic value property with a fantastic central location where many sights are less than a 15-minute walk away. Traditional, no-frills rooms have minibars, air-conditioning, and coffeemakers; some have jetted showers and flat-screen TVs. But room decor is dated with old tube TVs, and some rooms have loud exterior noise. The included breakfast receives good reviews and there are Italian beers and wines available 24/7 at the on-site bar. A lovely outdoor balcony has seating and plenty of greenery. Wi-Fi throughout has a daily fee, and there's no on-site parking.

Empire Palace Hotel
Via Aureliana 39, Centre - Via Veneto

Although its expensive sounding name and four-pearl status might confuse hotel seekers, the Empire Palace has surprisingly reasonable rates, especially for its central, mid-city location. It's surrounded by several great restaurants and shops, and is near the lovely Villa Borghese Gardens. Although some rooms are small and all could use some updating, breakfast and Wi-Fi are included in the room rate, and the hotel is equipped with a large meeting and presentation space. It's a good choice for tourists who want to explore Rome and don’t mind a slightly longer walk to such attractions as the Colosseum, and for business travelers who need a space to hold meetings or events.

Fabulous Village
Via di Malafede 205

Camping Fabulous is a campsite in a pine forest with 100 bungalows and mobile homes about an hour's drive from Rome. Guests can bring their own tent or choose one of the bungalows or mobile homes with air-conditioning, private bathrooms, and lovely shaded patios. There are two huge pools and mini-golf, a playground, and tennis to keep the kids entertained. The on-site restaurants, bars, and ice cream parlor offer good value, but the campsite can have the chaotic atmosphere of an all-kids summer camp.

QuodLibet

The Four Seasons it is not, but this small and charming bed and breakfast right by the Vatican adheres to a theme, with its four rooms named for the changing seasons. Open since 2011, it’s a reasonable option in a prime location for travelers who prefer the comforts of home and are OK with the cozy B&B atmosphere.

Albergo del Senato

With its fantastic central location, excellent service, and rooftop terrace with spectacular Pantheon views, mid-range Albergo del Senato is worth its slightly higher rates. The 56 classically-styled bedrooms are beautiful and well-maintained, with modern amenities including minibars, flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Some have Pantheon views, though effective soundproofing keeps piazza noise to a minimum. The free breakfast buffet includes handmade cakes and self-serve pancakes, but hot items cost extra. Drinks are served on the rooftop terrace in high season, while in winter, the cozy lobby bar is accompanied by piazza patio seating. A business corner and meeting room round out facilities. For a significantly cheaper option with beautiful rooftop views of Piazza Venezia, try Pace Helvezia Hotel -- but beware of worn furnishings and occasional lackluster service.

All Ways Garden Hotel & Leisure
Via di Castel di Leva 108

Located outside Rome off the ring motorway that circles the city, the 38-room All Ways Garden Hotel & Leisure is not recommended for travelers without a car. This smart-looking, motel-style, mid-range hotel is five miles from Ciampino Airport, and can make for a convenient stopover at much lower rates than would be found in central Rome. Set on five acres of parkland, the hotel offers free private parking, a free breakfast, Wi-Fi, and access to a fitness and sports complex about five miles away. The sleek modern rooms come with microwaves, freezers, minibars, espresso machines, and large flat-screen TVs.

The Tribune Hotel
Via Dei Campani 45

Design-conscious interiors at this upscale boutique hotel are chic and stylish, and the location near the lovely Villa Borghese places it within a 20-minute walk of the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. The 52 guest rooms are equally elegant, with clean, contemporary decor and a great assortment of mod cons, including Nespresso machines, free minibars, free Wi-Fi, and a smartphone for guest use with free calls and internet. But  rooms have poor soundproofing and noise may be an issue. An abundant free breakfast buffet is served in the mornings, plus there's a lovely rooftop terrace with a bar. The fitness room has only three machines, but at least they're modern. For more features, check out the Hotel Indigo Rome - St. George, which has a spa, restaurant, and wine bar for around the same rates.
