Hotel Royal Court

The Hotel Royal Court is a three-and-a-half-pearl boutique property located in a residential area near Rome’s Termini station that occupies two buildings a couple of blocks apart. The main hotel has a pretty courtyard, chic lobby, lovely rooftop terrace, and a breakfast room where a classic spread is served daily for an extra charge. There's a total of 37 guest rooms, with 12 sleek and contemporary spaces available in the annex and 25 traditionally decorated rooms in the main building that are starting to show their age. There's no full restaurant, and if no on-site gym is a deal-breaker, travelers can consider the Venetia Palace Hotel just down the street. It often has similar rates and it has a sauna and rooftop hot tub in addition to a fitness center.

Rome Life Hotel

From the outside, the three-and-a-half-pearl Rome Life Hotel looks nearly identical to the other standard buildings on a street between Monti and the business district near Via Nazionale. But inside, the hotel is surprisingly modern, with sleek black touches and high ceilings in the lounge overlooking the contemporary conference space behind the lobby. The 45 guest rooms are also stylish, with updated, chic decor and free minibars. The small rooftop terrace and bar set the hotel further apart from other standard properties in the area. While there are areas to lounge, the city beckons and many monuments like the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain are reachable in a 15-minute walk. For around the same rates, the nearby Rome Times Hotel offers similar amenities and rooms.

Bettoja Hotel Mediterraneo

The upper-middle-range Bettoja Hotel Mediterraneo is a romantic and elegant Art Deco hotel within walking distance of the Termini train station. The 251 rooms vary in style and decor, but all include stocked minibars and flat-screen TVs, and the Suites have terraces. The hotel offers a variety of dining options (including a rooftop garden restaurant and bar), plus a fitness center, and fully equipped meeting spaces. However, there have been complaints about the Wi-Fi connectivity and some guests find the breakfast buffet low quality. Those looking for a similar hotel with a contemporary design may want to compare prices at the Starhotels Metropole.

Navona 49

Navona 49 is a three-and-a-half-pearl inn with a beautiful rooftop terrace and six guest rooms directly overlooking Piazza Navona in the heart of Rome. The hotel occupies space in a historic building, and interiors have an eye-pleasing mix of minimalist-chic and traditional decor. The area is packed full of shops, bars, pizzerias, and trattorias, and the hotel is withinwalking distance to most of the monuments and popular tourist attractions of the city. Rooms and suites are both elegant and modern, with iPads, minibars, and rainfall showers. Free breakfast is included, but facilities are limited. Though not right on the piazza, it's worth comparing rates at the nearby Palazzo Navona Hotel which has a large rooftop terrace with a bar.

Villa Teresa
2664 North Susquehanna Trail Shamokin Dam

The 14-room Villa Teresa is a rustic, country-style property where guests will get what they pay for. This value hotel is best for travelers passing by on either of the nearby freeways, or budget-minded guests with their own transportation. Located a 30-minute drive outside of Rome, this slightly neglected spot has sparse but comfortable rooms with shower-only bathrooms and small flat-screen TVs. Some rooms also have pleasant terraces. A basic breakfast is available for a small fee and there is a simple bar for drinks. There's not much in the area, although a bus stops just outside the property for relatively convenient travel into the city. Those who can swing twice the price (which still isn't much), will find contemporary rooms, a restaurant, and slightly closer proximity to the center of Rome at the Best Western Plus Art Hotel Noba.

Cineroma Guesthouse

Next Door Guesthouse is a cool, stylish hostel in the non-touristy Nomentana area, well east of central Rome. While it's far from major tourist sights, rates are more affordable than at city center hotels, plus it's only 30 minutes to the city center by bus or metro. The hostel features lots of bright colors, playful decorative elements, and six rooms with free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. One room has a dormitory-style setup with a shared bathroom. There's a living room area and communal kitchen, but no other on-site features. Travelers will be hard-pressed to find rates and style like this in the center of the city, but those willing to spend more could consider The Beehive.

Stay Inn

The 15-room Stay Inn is a simple boutique offering excellent value; its affordable rates and fabulous location, within walking distance of numerous sights such as the Spanish Steps and the Pantheon, mean that its books up quickly. There is no fitness center, spa, or restaurant (the in-room breakfast consists of little more than coffee and a packaged croissant), but rooms are sleek and contemporary, decorated in shades of white, black, and gray, and feature modern bathrooms, small flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. The Stay Inn's nearby sister hotel, Condotti Palace, offers a comparable experience, so it's worth comparing prices.

Luxury on the River
Lungotevere Dei Mellini 34, Vaticano - Prati

In walking distance to many Rome attractions, the upper-middle-range Luxury on the River is a cross between an intimate boutique hotel and a bed-and-breakfast, offering just eight guest rooms. Features are few as well, but there is a small reception area and a stylish breakfast room where a nice (and free) spread of cold dishes is served daily. Reception is not open 24 hours, but guests rave about the helpful, personalized service from staff. Rooms are the real highlight, with chic, modern decor, big bathrooms, and modern amenities like minibars and 40-inch flat-screen TVs. Apartments add extras such as hot tubs and full equipped kitchens. Those looking from more amenities could try the Hotel Dei Mellini, which has a restaurant, lounge, and gym, but its rooms aren't as chic.

Hotel Residenza San Calisto
Via Dell'Arco di San Calisto 19/20

Residenza Santa Maria is a six-room, mid-range hotel in Rome's lively Trastevere district. Most sights require a 20 to 30 minute bus ride or walk to reach, but the neighborhood has an authentic quality that's attractive to many travelers. Rooms are homey and quaint, with tile floors and wood-beam ceilings alongside modern features like flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and minibars. The hotel features a free hot and cold breakfast buffet, and bikes can be rented at its sister property, Hotel Santa Maria. The Residenza is not as big or upscale as the nearby Donna Camilla Savelli Hotel, but the room rates here are more affordable.

Suites Trastevere
Viale di Trastevere 248

Suites Trastevere is a small bed-and-breakfast with just five rooms located in Rome's historically picturesque Trastevere neighborhood. This two-and-a-half-pearl property offers a free breakfast with pastries and cold cuts, and the kitchen is stocked with free snacks like yogurt plus coffee and tea. The rooms are clean and attractive, with large murals painted on the walls and amenities like flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. The location is popular with tourists, but guests will have to take transportation to see major attractions like the Trevi Fountain or the Colosseum. Travelers seeking something closer to Rome's top sights should check out SuiteDreams Hotel, a mid-range property within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain.
