Relais Giulia
Via Giulia 93

The 13-room Relais Giulia is a stylish three-and-a-half-pearl boutique-sized option with preserved original features from the 16th century. Rooms were specially designed by two Italian architects, and feature unique industrial-chic touches with original accents like heavy wood-beamed ceilings and restored frescos. Amenities include decently stocked minibars, air-conditioning, slippers, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and free Wi-Fi. Suites feature dramatic metal four-poster beds and hydromassage tubs with separate showers. Facilities are limited, but the free continental breakfast has a range of cold options including pastries, yogurt, cereals, cold cuts, and cheese. There’s also a pretty courtyard with free daily pastries, as well as free Wi-Fi throughout. For another atmospheric cloister-style setting with a full range of facilities, try VOI Donna Camilla Savelli Hotel in Trastevere instead (though it's across the Tiber).

Domus RomAntica
Via Belisario 7

The six-room Domus RomAntica is a mid-range boutique hotel centrally located close to several major tourist sights. Rooms have an elegant style with Neoclassical elements and romantic features like roses in vases, although decor feels a bit dark. They’re outfitted with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and minibars, but lack coffee- and tea-making facilities. There’s free Wi-Fi throughout, though there have been many complaints about connectivity issues. Hotel features are limited to breakfast vouchers, which are sometimes included in rates and can be used at one of two cafes. As an alternative, La Finestra sul Colosseo B&B offers a free breakfast delivered to the rooms each morning, as well as a free bottle of wine and fruit upon arrival, though rates tend to be a bit more expensive.

Best Western Plus Hotel Spring House
Via Mocenigo 7

The Best Western Hotel Spring House is a pleasant, family-friendly mid-range option located just 10 minutes from the Vatican on foot. The 76 rooms range from classic to more modern, with standard amenities including decent pillow menus, minibars, electric kettles, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Bi-level suites that fit up to five are a bonus for families. An excellent breakfast buffet is provided for a reasonable fee, and there's a bar serving full lunches and dinners. The lovely garden is a nice surprise, as is the small wellness center with a 24-hour gym. There’s also a small meeting room free for business guests and two internet corners. For a similar option that's closer to the major attractions in Rome's historic center, try Hotel Artemide instead, but prepared to pay more.

Smart Hotel

Located with walking distance of Termini Railway Station, the three-and-a-half-pearl Smart Hotel Roma is well situated for tourists and business travelers. Opened in 2013, it has a streamlined style with notable modern amenities. Its 64 rooms are sleek and clean with stylish bathrooms, smart TVs, and minibars, but some can be a bit small. A well-reviewed breakfast buffet is included, and the hotel has a restaurant and bar serving drinks and coffee throughout the day and evening. One conference room is available for meetings. The hotel has no gym or other features and rooms lack coffee/tea facilities. Travelers interested in a similarly located hotel with homier (but still modern) decor could consider the UNA Hotel Roma, which has comparable amenities at moderately higher rates.

Relais Trevi 95 Boutique Hotel - Adults Only

The three-pearl Relais Trevi 95 Hotel occupies a convenient location near the Trevi Fountain and within walking distance of several of the city’s main attractions. Its 20 guest rooms range in size, but feature sleek decor, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, cheap minibars, and tea/coffee facilities. Though there’s no full restaurant, the hotel serves a free breakfast buffet and has a small bar on-site. Both can be served in a lovely garden room in the mornings and evenings. Overall, this stylish hotel offers excellent value and charming spaces for a mid-range property. It might be worth comparing prices at the nearby Hotel Trevi, which has a relaxation area with a hot tub.

Charmsuite Roma Raffaello
Via del Banco di Santo Spirito 21

Set inside a 16th-century apartment building, this mid-range option offers five comfy, character-filled suites on a pedestrian strip near the Tiber. It’s lively (and potentially noisy) location puts guests in walking distance of major sites, but the building’s shared entrance doesn't make the best first impression, and on-site features are few. Fortunately, the little lobby is a lovely space inspired by the painter for whom The Raffaello was named (aka Raphael), and the kitchenette-equipped suites accentuate their architectural pedigree by combining modern amenities like rainfall showers, flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi with period details (say, a gorgeous coffered ceiling or parquet floor). If you’d prefer an equally intimate three-pearl spot with less charm but better views, consider the aptly-named Colosseo Panoramic Rooms opposite the Colosseum.

Palazzo Dama Hotel

Palazzo Dama has a style that's equal parts sumptuous and fun, with a vibe that ranges from calm to wild depending on the day of the week. Lots of features make this property stand out from the pack in Rome, including its beautiful outdoor pool, its Peruvian food and beverage program, and its popular nightclub. The 29 rooms are spacious and all include Nespresso machines (fee), minibars, and upscale Acqua di Parma bath products. Despite the busy area, just off Piazza del Popolo and next to the Tiber River, rooms are mostly peaceful, though the nightclub can stay open late with revelers on weekend nights. If you'd like something a bit quieter, check out sister property, DOM Hotel, which is equally stylish, but has a quieter atmosphere.

Portrait Roma
Via Bocca di Leone, 23

The upscale Portrait Roma is a chic boutique property situated in a townhouse owned by the Ferragamo family, so it's loaded with details inspired by the famous shoe designer and has style to spare. The atmosphere is discreet and private and service is highly personalized. The 14 stylish suites are decked out with modern tech like mini iPads, Bose sound systems, and Nespresso machines, plus they have well equipped kitchenettes and luxe white marble bathrooms. Features are limited at this small property, but a free breakfast is served on the charming rooftop terrace that overlooks the nearby Spanish steps. The surroundings are rife with luxury shopping on Via Condotti, plus Rome's top attractions are nearby. For a similar alternative, the nearby J.K. Place Roma has a restaurant and a cocktail lounge, but higher rates.

Navona Theatre Hotel
Vicolo Dei Granari 3

The Navona Theatre Hotel offers attractive, modern accommodations in Centro Storico for a reasonable rate. The three-and-a-half-pearl boutique property is situated in the heart of the historic district near cafes, restaurants, and shops, and within a short stroll of the Piazza Navona and Piazza Campo de' Fiori. Its 11 stylish guest rooms come well-equipped with flat-screen TVs, minibars, electric kettles, and free Wi-Fi, and bathrooms have spacious walk-in rainfall showers. Suites with seating areas are also available. Features are limited, but there's a well-regarded hot breakfast buffet for an extra charge that's served in the hotel's chic dining room. Travelers looking for guest rooms with traditional decor might consider the nearby Hotel Teatro Pace, but it it doesn't provide breakfast.

Hotel Ivanhoe
Via Dei Ciancaleoni 49, Via Urbana 92a

The 24-room Hotel Ivanhoe is a mid-range property with a fantastic central location where many top sights are less than a 15-minute walk away. Simple and clean rooms have minibars, flat-screen TVs with Sky TV, and air-conditioning, and some have coffeemakers. However, all rooms and basic bathrooms are small, and the shower stalls are tiny. Additionally, some rooms have loud street noise. Breakfast is included and receives good reviews, and there's an on-site bar with drinks plus an on-site cafeteria with snacks. A lovely terrace with bistro tables, umbrellas, and rooftop views is a highlight of the property. Free Wi-Fi runs throughout, but there is no business center, and there's a fee for train station or airport transportation.
