NH Collection Roma Vittorio Veneto
Corso d'Italia, 1

Another large hotel in the NH chain, the mid-range Vittorio Veneto meets the company’s benchmark of contemporary elegance with new, clean and comfortable furniture and facilities, and a restaurant and bar. Located in the high-end Via Veneto area within walking distance (but be ready to hoof it uphill to get back to the hotel) to the Spanish Steps and other attractions, the location is ideal and prices are decent, although the place does not look or feel Italian and is designed largely for business travelers.

Hotel Splendide Royal
Via di Porta Pinciana 14

Living up to its name, the upscale Hotel Splendide Royal emanates elegance from the moment guests step inside and walk through the marble and mosaic hallway, below vaulted archways lit by many chandeliers. Ideally located in a quiet area across from Villa Borghese park, and within easy walking distance of popular sights, the 69-room Royal is ideal for tourists and families with ample means. Business travelers looking to host on-site meetings and dine at the delicious rooftop restaurant will also find the property appealing. Guest rooms have Baroque-style decor and marble bathrooms; many have terraces, as well. Wi-Fi and breakfast are included.

The Building Hotel
Via Montebello 126

The Building Hotel blends over 100 years of history with mostly modern interiors and features not often found in central Rome to create a bargain-hunter's dream. This upper-middle-range property sits just to the north of Termini Station, putting it a bit far from Rome's major sights. However, the Castro Pretorio Metro station is essentially around the corner. That's especially nice, considering the amenities on offer. There's an outdoor courtyard pool (a rarity in Rome), a lovely spa, fitness center, and even a piece of Rome's ancient city wall on the property. Rooms are generically contemporary and can be a bit dark, but include Smart TVs, minibars, and individually controlled air-conditioning. The restaurant is popular with previous guests, and serves food all day (including a breakfast buffet). If you'd prefer a more central option, check out the more charming Relais Giulia, near the Tiber River and Prati, though you'll get far less for your money there.

Aurelia Residence San Pietro
Via Aurelia 145

The mid-range Aurelia Residence San Pietro offers a good value and spacious, residence-style accommodations near the Vatican and a bus stop, which provides transportation to other major attractions. The sunny, green rooftop terrace gives a pleasant perch to enjoy the hotel's free breakfast. But the busy street outside is noisy and leaves little room for strolling pedestrians. The Aurelia's apartment-like rooms with extra sofa beds make them a good choice for families, although the rooms, while spacious and well-equipped, are somewhat old-fashioned in their classic decor. Travelers looking for a taste of residential life in Rome might also want to consider Il Boom B & B.

Hotel Columbia

The three-pearl Hotel Columbia offers a great location to public transportation and romantic features, like antique furnishings and paintings. The 45 air-conditioned rooms include flat-screen TVs, minibars, electric kettles, and gorgeous Murano glass chandeliers, though they're not very spacious and might feel too old-fashioned for some. Suites and Family rooms are also available. A free breakfast is served on a terrace or in a breakfast room that doubles as a bar and lounge. For those looking for a more modern hotel, it may be worth checking the prices at Hotel Selene Rome

Best Western Globus Hotel
Viale Ippocrate 119

The mid-range Best Western Globus Hotel has 103 rooms spread over six floors. Near the Policinico Umberto Primo Hospital and Sapienza University of Rome, the building itself is about 60 years old, while the hotel has been here for about 10 years. Inside, there are a small lobby and reception area, two meeting rooms, and a restaurant with a bar. Rooms are  similar in design and style -- meaning they're simple, functional, bright, and minimalist. The hotel's proximity to a major hospital means sirens can be heard throughout the day and night. For a quieter stay and a location closer to the city center and the Vatican, the Best Western Spring House Hotel might be a better, albeit pricier, alternative.

Quirinale Hotel

Built in 1865, the 209-room Quirinale Hotel is an upscale property decorated to reflect much of its original charm. The location is convenient, within walking distance to Trevi Fountain plus a variety of shops and restaurants in the surrounding area. Charming rooms with original architectural details have free Wi-Fi, small flat-screen TVs, and electric kettles, but the antique decor may not be to everyone's liking, and some bathrooms have small stand-up showers. There’s a restaurant on-site with an outside dining area facing a pretty garden, and the hotel has a bar serving light fare. A free breakfast buffet is provided, but it earns mixed reviews from guests. Another alternative travelers could consider is The Britannia Hotel, an upscale property near the Piazza della Repubblica that serves an impressive breakfast buffet.

Vaticano84

The three-pearl Vaticano84 is an intimate, four-room property situated within an apartment complex right outside the walls of Vatican City, just a three-minute walk from the entrance to the Vatican Museums. Common areas are limited to small lobby dining space and an outdoor terrace, and an extremely simple (but free) breakfast is offered in-room. Rooms, designed for two to four guests, are clean, modern, and compact with en-suite bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, and minibars, gently stocked with free drinks and replenished daily. One room here has a kitchenette, but guests looking for more apartment-style options might consider the nearby Residence Candia.

SuiteSistina for Lovers
Via Sistina 54

This chic mid-range boutique property is solely for couples on romantic getaways, offering stylish rooms filled with mood lighting and sexy features like in-room soaking or whirlpool tubs and rainfall showers. Features are limited to free minibars and free hot breakfast that's delivered to guest rooms, as well as a handful of services available for additional charges, such as massages, burlesque lessons, and personal shopping. Location is top-notch as well and great for those seeking to explore Rome on foot, as the Spanish Steps are just a five-minute walk away and most other popular sites are within walking distance. The vibe here is decidedly adult, with display cases of erotic toys and other items available for purchase in the lobby. Those traveling with kids might want to look elsewhere, such as the nearby Hotel Anahi or Hotel Condotti.

Hotel Opera Roma

The lower-middle-range Hotel Opera Roma offers 10 rooms near Rome's Termini station and sights. Its convenient location draws sightseeing leisure travelers, and Old-World decor pays homage to the opposite Opera House. Gilt accents and rich fabrics can appear charming or dated, depending on the traveler, although spaces are bright, as are many rooms. Minibars and AC are bonuses for a hotel of this category, and likewise the small elevator, especially since the property was built in 1912. A small lobby and buffet breakfast are the only features, but the latter is filling and free, and travelers generally spend their days out. Rates are more competitive at the charming Arpinelli Relais, although it doesn't provide breakfast.
