Classics Hotel Bastille
131 rue de Charonne 11th Arr.

The 35-room Classics Hotel Bastille is a mid-range hotel situated in Paris's 11th arrondissement close to the Charonne Metro stop. The hotel doesn't impress much from the outside, but interiors have nice contemporary flourishes and the rear secluded garden is a real bonus. Rooms are small but modern with stylish accents and wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, kettles, and safes. Lack of air-conditioning can be an issue during the summer. There is a sunny breakfast room with a glass roof overlooking the garden. Despite some shortcomings, this hotel is a good value option.

Hotel Etoile Trocadero

The Hotel Etoile Trocadero is a small, basic hotel located in the 16th arrondissement in the western part of Paris. The location is excellent for visiting the Eiffel Tower and the Champs-Elysées, and there are plenty of transportation options nearby for reaching other parts of the city. Rooms have an attractive, classic look but are are on the small side and can be noisy; some of the bathrooms are showing signs of mold. With few facilities, the hotel experience is a little underwhelming, and the rates aren't that cheap. It's worth considering if you can find a deal; otherwise the nearby Hotel Longchamp Elysees represents better value for money.

Hotel Jacques de Molay

The Hotel Jacques de Molay is a mid-range boutique hotel set in the picturesque and increasingly trendy Le Marais neighborhood of central Paris. Interiors convey a superb renovation that retains much of the feel of the older building -- including exposed beams and stone walls -- with fresh contemporary styling. Some of the 23 guest rooms are tiny, but all are nicely decorated with matte wood floors and soothing tones, with touches of deep purple or silver. Fitness facilities and a sauna are unexpected bonuses for this type of Parisian hotel, and while rates aren't cheap, it's a pretty good value for the area. Cheaper but not quite as swish alternatives include the nearby Hotel Beaumarchais and Hotel Alhambra.

New Orient Hotel

The Hotel New Orient, set in a Haussmann-style building near the Parc Monceau, is a 30-room family-owned boutique hotel in the quiet part of the 8th arrondissement, north of the Champs-Elysees. It's about a 20-minute walk north of the Opera National de Paris and the Madeleine. The New Orient Hotel has a homey vibe, from the quiet breakfast room to the bright, light-filled rooms. There's free Wi-Fi throughout, and some rooms have balconies overlooking the street. Rates are reasonable for a mid-range hotel in Paris.

Majestic Hotel Spa

This luxury property has 46 elegant rooms and suites set in a beautiful 19th century Parisian building. Renovated in 2010, the decor is a mix of classical and modern French style. Rooms are stocked with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and inlaid wood furniture -- some have private balconies and fireplaces. The location is ideal for tourists, Arc de Triomphe and Place de l'Etoile are within a 10-minute walk. With an excellent restaurant, indoor swimming pool, fitness center, and spa, this hotel provides a good value compared to pricier five-pearl hotels in the area.

Citadines Bastille Marais Paris
37 Boulevard Richard Lenoir 11th Arr.

Overlooking a garden and located within a 10-minute walk of the Place de la Bastille and Opera Bastille, this is a mid-range option with 138 apartments -- both studios and one-bedrooms with weekly housekeeping -- on seven floors. The hotel has two meeting rooms, laundry facilities, and free Wi-Fi -- but little else. Although it is pet-friendly, and serves breakfast. The aesthetic is of a chain establishment, both in the rooms and in the common areas, but the apartment setup with kitchenettes might make it a good choice for long-term stays. Rooms are bright but plain, with laminate wood surfaces. Some have small balconies. Guests have noted some wear and tear in the rooms, particularly in the bathrooms.

Little Palace Hotel

Centrally located between the Reamur-Sebastopol and Strasbourg St. Denis metro stations, off the very busy Boulevard de Sebastopol,  the Golden Tulip Little Palace is a 15- to 20-minute metro ride to various Paris sights. Housed in a late-19th century building with a classical facade of marble columns and carved stone, this boutique property's interior is sleek, colorful, and quirky -- large replica Gustav Klimt paintings double as headboards in the rooms here. Rooms, which include four suites, come with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, air-conditioning, and minibars. While some have balconies and terraces, be aware that the less expensive rooms have limited views.

Villa Pantheon

Opened in 2000, this 59-room upper-mid-range hotel is in the Latin Quarter of central Paris. It’s a beautiful area, and is an ideal base for seeing the city's sights. There's no restaurant at the hotel but there are countless restaurants and bars on the doorstep. The hotel’s decor is British-themed, so think tartan prints and leather chesterfield sofas. Rooms are clean, with a traditional style and colorful accents, but are showing wear and tear in places. If you prefer something a bit more hip, it's worth checking out the nearby Hotel Le Notre Dame, which offers Christian Lacroix-designed rooms for a similar price.

The Peninsula Paris

The 200-room Peninsula Paris, located in the 16th arrondissement near the Arc de Triomphe and Champs Elysees, is one of the city's top luxury hotels and rivaled only by a handful of competitors (Shangri-La Paris and Hotel Plaza Athenee among them). It reopened in 2014 after a four-year, multi-million dollar restoration, and the historic property offers guests opulent interiors and a high level of service made possible by the 600 staff members. Several dining and drinking options include a rooftop restaurant with beautiful panoramic views over the city, a sumptuous lobby bar with outdoor terrace, and a lavish Cantonese restaurant. The hotel also has a full-service underground spa with lovely pool and two fitness rooms. Rooms, which are some of the largest in Paris, feature elegant decor in neutral tones and a bounty of high-tech details, including tablet-operated lights, temperature, and valet calls (though the controls may strike some as too complicated).

Villa Beaumarchais

This 50-room, upper-middle-range hotel has a quaint French charm. Well-located in the heart of the Marais district, but set on a peaceful street, it’s a good base for exploring the city. The guest rooms may be showing some wear and tear in places, but they are immaculately clean and have a distinctly Parisian feel. There’s no restaurant (though a paid breakfast buffet gets high marks) or spa at this property, but for travelers looking for a classic French experience, this shouldn’t disappoint.
