Westgate Myrtle Beach Oceanfront Resort
415 South Ocean Boulevard Street 2

The Westgate is an affordable family-friendly hotel right on the water. While the rooms are a bit on the tacky side -- with clashing patterns and colors throughout -- they are clean and have spacious balconies with great ocean views. There's plenty to keep families with young children entertained, such as multiple pools, a lazy river, a children's activity center, and a large game room. It's also adjacent to the Family Kingdom Amusement Park.

Marriott Myrtle Beach Resort & Spa at Grande Dunes

It’s refreshing to find a hotel in Myrtle Beach with lovely (as opposed to dated) interiors like you'll find at Marriott Myrtle Beach Resort & Spa at Grande Dunes. The hotel on a quiet stretch of beach about a 15-minute drive from Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade. This upscale property offers a wide-range of amenities for its diverse clientele. Kids like luxe amenities like a stylish video game lounge, indoor and outdoor pools, and a seasonal waterslide. With four restaurants and bars serving American cuisine, guests have a lot of dining options from which to choose. The 408 rooms are modern and come with mini-fridges and coffeemakers, though many lack full ocean views. Guests should note there's a pricey resort fee and that there are still fees for breakfast, the business center, and reserving a pool chair in the summer. North Beach Plantation is an appropriate alternative property with upscale amenities and condos with kitchens.

Sheraton Broadway Resort Villas
3301 Robert M Grissom Pkwy

A gated and staffed security entrance leads to this upper-middle-range 460-room complex that's beautifully landscaped with trees and ponds with fountains. While not directly on the beach, there's still many ways to get wet, including a large outdoor pool, an indoor pool, kiddy pool, lazy river, and Splash Cove kids' pool with pirate ship. Families can spread out in villas with separate living and dining areas. Broadway at the Beach, a 305-acre entertainment center with dining, shopping, movie theater, boardwalks, and recreation (NASCAR Speedpark, Myrtle Waves Water Park, and Ripley’s Aquarium) is across the street.

The Waves Hotel at Myrtle Beach

The Waves Hotel at Myrtle Beach is a family-run value hotel in a location that's quieter than the main strip. The hotel comes at a budget price, but there aren’t a lot of amenities, just an outdoor pool with ocean views and a lawn for sunbathing. Some of the hotel’s 23 rooms are in serious need of an update, but others have been refreshed more recently. Rooms with ocean-facing balconies and kitchenettes are available. Guests -- especially those traveling with pets -- may want to compare prices with the Mermaid Inn, a pet-friendly beachfront hotel with an outdoor pool deck set with colorful lounge chairs.

Summer Wind Inn & Suites
1903 S Ocean Blvd

Located in South Myrtle Beach, Summer Wind Inn & Suites is a dated and rundown budget beachfront property earning complaints on everything from bad smells to bugs to broken outlets, but new management took over in 2013, and a renovation was underway when we visited. The hotel's 42 rooms offer free Wi-Fi, microwaves, and mini-fridges (some units have full stoves and refrigerators), and there's a small outdoor pool.  Rooms with sea-view balconies are available, and the hotel reports that these have new furnishings, mattresses, and carpeting. There’s no on-site restaurant, but snacks and drinks are available for sale in the lobby. For a similar rates, travelers might want to check out Aqua Beach Inn, a value hotel with fresh, bright rooms that's about a 10-minute drive north of Summer Wind Inn & Suites, and it's located across the street from the beach.

Monterey Bay Suites

Set on the quiet north end of Myrtle Beach, the 194-room Monterey Bay Suites is a mid-range beachfront property with three pools, including an indoor pool with a lazy river and kids' pool, and three hot tubs. A large beachfront lawn has a playground, cornhole games, and lounge chairs. In the summer months, there's a poolside snack bar, lunch service, and a kids’ club. A free breakfast is served daily year-round, and the hotel has a small fitness center, and small parking garage. Tropical-style suites have kitchens, living rooms with Murphy beds, and some have beachfront balconies, although furnishings are a bit old-fashioned. Travelers might want to compare rates with the Sea Watch Resort, which has a restaurant and ice-cream shop.

Red Roof Inn Myrtle Beach Hotel - Market Commons
2801 S Kings Hwy

This budget property from the Red Roof Inn chain is a fairly no-frills option, but offers a good value for a location within a 10-minute walk of the beach and a six-minute drive to Myrtle Beach International Airport. Guest rooms feature contemporary decor- however, only some are equipped with flat-screen TVs, microwaves, and mini-fridges- while suites add sofas and wet bars. There's not much in terms of features here, but there's a pleasant outdoor pool. The hotel also offers a handful of freebies like parking, Wi-Fi, and tea and coffee in the lobby. It's too bad the free breakfast is offered only in the summer. For something with more features, check out the mid-range Captain's Quarters Resort, which has several pools, including a lazy river, and on-site dining.

Coral Beach Resort & Suites
1105 South Ocean Boulevard

Families who want to keep the kids entertained will enjoy the mid-range Coral Beach Resort & Suites. With a beachfront location in Myrtle Beach, about 10 water features (including a water park and lazy river), and an entertainment zone with bowling and an indoor playground, families may find themselves overwhelmed with options. The hotel keeps everyone fed with an American restaurant with outdoor seating, an upscale tapas bar, paid breakfast buffet, and coffeeshop. Depending on your cleanliness comforts and need for modernity, the 301 rooms may be a drawback or a selling point. The standard rooms have microwaves and mini-fridges, while suites feature kitchens, but they’re not spotless. Note that the resort doesn't accept any cash. Captain’s Quarter’s Resort is a good alternative for similar amenities but is closer the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade.

Camelot by the Sea, Oceana Resorts

Location is a highlight at this mid-range condo property, which sits right on the beach and is within an eight-minute walk of the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade. The resort offers both indoor and outdoor pools (including a lazy river and a kids' pool) as well as a moderately sized fitness room and extras like free DVD rentals, a business center, and guest laundry facilities. There's also a Dunkin' Donuts on-site and a seasonal snack bar by the pool. The 150 studios and one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites all have balconies and full kitchens, but they're individually owned, so decor varies. Some feel tired and are in need of updates, plus some guests complain of cleanliness issues. Families looking for more activity might consider the sister resort, the Bay Watch Resort & Conference Center, which features three restaurants and 18 water amenities.

Ocean 22 by Hilton Grand Vacations

The beachfront Ocean 22 by Hilton Grand Vacations opened in 2015 as an upper-middle-range option that draws families and couples. It features lovely indoor and outdoor pools that include a sunbathing lawn and a seasonal bar. There's also a well equipped fitness center, as well as a game room stocked with toys and games. Though there's no full restaurant here, the hotel has an inviting lobby bar and a small shop selling snacks, sandwiches, and Starbucks coffee. The 220 one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites are sleek and contemporary, and all come with furnished balconies, living rooms, and full kitchens decked out with stainless steel appliances. Expect to pay a resort fee that covers self-parking (valet parking is extra), Wi-Fi, and two bottles of water. Travelers looking for more activities might want to consider Captain’s Quarters Resort, which is not as chic or modern, but has a water park, bowling alley, and arcade.
