Tigmiza Boutique Hôtel & Spa
Route de Bab Atlas, Douar Lagribate - Palmeraie

Tigmiza Suites & Pavillons is a luxurious, 27-room hotel in its own walled complex, surrounded by lush, herb-scented gardens. Its location provides a peaceful setting a 20-minute drive away from the hubbub of the medina, though some might find it too far from the action. Decor is lovely throughout, especially in the individually themed suites, while lavish Villas provide extra seclusion and private pools. While not perfect -- pools can be too chilly and drinks are pricey -- this family-run boutique hotel is an outstanding example of its kind. The Sahara Palace nearby is even more luxurious, if not as intimate, so it may be worth comparing rates.

Les Jardins de La Koutoubia
26 Rue de la Koutoubia

The 100-room Les Jardins de La Koutoubia is a Moroccan romantic haven, offering luxury palatial designs, Moorish furnishings, secluded tropical courtyards with fountains, and quick access to Jemaa el-Fna square. The intimate hotel features rooftop and outdoor garden pools, an elegant spa with an indoor pool, and on-site dining and cocktails. Still, guests sometimes complain about in-room noise from the dumbwaiter and elevators. The nearby Es Saadi Gardens and Resort, which reportedly offers quieter rooms, might be an alternative option.

Diwane Hotel & Spa Marrakech
24 rue Yougoslavie, Guéliz

The 115-room, upper-middle-range Hotel Diwane is located in the Gueliz quarter of Marrakech's new city. Within a 20-minute walk of the medina, it's conveniently situated for tourists. Designed and decorated in Riad style, with lots of traditional Moroccan mosaic work, the Diwane feels a bit like a throwback, but it has a large courtyard pool surrounded by sun beds. Rooms are spacious and clean but somewhat care-worn; the Moroccan paintings and pottery, though, and lovely mosaic work, add character.

Ecolodge Quaryati
Douar Tounsi, Sidi Abdallah Ghiat, BP 548 Marrakech Principale

Ecolodge Quaryati, about a 45-minute drive from central Marrakech, is an upper middle-range, eco-friendly complex. Its 41 air-conditioned rooms are modern yet traditionally simple, with balconies or patios. Some of the Suites and detached two- or three-bedroom villas have rooftop terraces with lovely views of the countryside and Atlas Mountains, along with satellite TV. Food is a highlight here, prepared with organic produce from nearby farms, and the swimming pool is large -- if a little cold. Hammam, scrubs, and massage treatments are available on-site. The reasonably priced Ecolodge Quaryati is for those after a secluded, peaceful, countryside retreat in a rustic setting.

Hotel Atlas Asni
Avenue de France

The 334-room mid-range Hotel Atlas Asni is within a five-minute walk of the Palais des Congres and has a large conference on-site, making it a good choice for business travelers. The architecture and decor are generic, but there is a large swimming pool with plenty of deck chairs and a small spa with a hammam. Rooms are moderately sized and basic. Overall, the resort feels a bit dated, but rates are reasonable and freebies include parking and Wi-Fi in common areas.

Murano Resort Marrakech
Route Douar Abiad, La Palmeraie BP 13172

Well outside of the city in the Palmeraie district, Murano Resort Marrakech is an alluring mix of traditional Moroccan architecture and modern opulence, with an occasional party scene centered around its red-tiled outdoor pool. This upscale property has four pools in total, and the 24 guest rooms all have marble bathrooms and private balconies or terraces; Deluxe Rooms are enormous, with fireplaces and bathrooms as big as European hotel rooms. Most guests appreciate the resort's French pedigree and style, but the service doesn't quite match, and the restaurants' limited menus leave something to be desired -- especially since the property is so far from the Medina.

Riad Aguaviva
St. Sidi Ghanem, Derb Derraz 3, Medina

Riad Aguaviva is an upscale boutique riad (traditional courtyard house) in the Medina of Marrakesh with six narrow, air-conditioned rooms and authentic Moorish details. In summer, the stone walls of the building create a cooling effect that protects the interiors from the heat of the streets. The owners are warm and welcoming, and provide guests with a cell phone programed with the Riad Aguaviva's number in case they get lost in the maze-like souks. Travelers looking for an authentic Moroccan experience in the old city will appreciate the personal touches and the intimate atmosphere; the dipping pool has fresh rose petals sprinkled into it every night. Breakfasts are delicious and varied and Wi-Fi is free. Guests looking for cheaper rates may want to also consider Riad Noos Noos, which is nearer the main square of Djemaa el Fna and has more affordably priced rooms

Riad les Orangers d'Alilia Marrakech
216 Rue Tadla, Derb Chtouka Marrakech-Medina

An upper-mid-range, 18th century riad in the heart of Marrakech's historic Medina, the five-suite Riad les Orangers d'Alilia Marrakech has been lovingly restored by its French owner into a chic, modern hideaway within walking distance of the city's major sights. The original architecture and ornate detailing have been maintained, and the courtyard and rooftop terrace are accentuated by the riad's signature fragrant orange trees. Guest rooms and common areas have been painted calming whites and creams and decked out with simple, modern furnishings. A homemade breakfast (included in the rate) is served each morning, traditional Moroccan meals can be served for lunch and dinner upon request. Unlike with many other riads in the Medina, guests can park almost in front of this one, and the lounge area has the rare television.

Riad Dar Oulhoum
8 Db Kori Sidi Ben Slimane

Walking into Riad Dar Oulhoum, a hidden three-and-a-half pear property within the historic medina, is like entering a private museum. It's tucked away in a maze of hard-to-navigate streets, far from parking or modern conveniences but a great place for travelers who want to discover Marrakech from the inside out. The rooms are superbly decorated with antiques and crafts collected everywhere from Fez to Bali. The expert guidance offered by the staff is helpful but not overbearing, and the Moroccan-style food is excellent. There's no pool or on-site spa, but this is one traditional guesthouse that doesn't lack authentic details, or style, and the rates are lower than at other riads with the same amenities.

Ona Marrakech Ryads & Spa
Douar Ouled Berrahmoun El Bou, El Bour

The 260-room Marrakech Ryads Parc & Spa delivers an affordable, family-friendly Moroccan getaway on 13 riads with sprawling lawns, two lagoon-shaped outdoor pools, a kids’ club, and a fully-equipped sports center. Buffet dining and a poolside snack bar are also on hand. Rooms have classic furnishings, tube TVs, mini-fridges, and garden terraces. The hotel’s location, though, is rather removed from popular Marrakech sights. For a hotel closer to the medina, try the Kenzi Agdal Medina Hotel, but expect higher prices.
