Boulan South Beach

Located a two-minute walk away from the ocean and an eight-minute walk from central Miami Beach, Boulan South Beach is a trendy, upscale condo-hotel surrounded by dining, shopping, and nightlife. All 52 apartments are large and have fully-equipped kitchens; space-wise, they are some of the biggest in Miami. Some rooms are penthouse suites with access to the rooftop. Note that some guests complain of housekeeping issues.

Circa 39 Hotel

Circa 39 is an upper-mid-range, reasonably priced hotel sandwiched between Miami's Collins Ave and the oceanfront, a 30-minute walk from South Beach. It has 100 trendy, retro-travel-inspired rooms, all with hardwood floors and white furniture accented by pops of color. Some of the larger rooms and suites have kitchenettes and sofas. Located in Mid-Beach, the hotel has direct beach access, beach equipment, and a mid-size pool surrounded by cabanas and teak loungers. The hotel also has a trendy bar and breezy, popular restaurant, The Jules Kitchen, which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. Note that, while rates may be reasonable, the hotel has a daily resort fee, in addition to extra fees for breakfast and parking.

The Fritz Hotel

The 22-room Fritz Hotel is a mid-range, competitively priced retreat located on Ocean Drive in South Beach. This property has an appealing rooftop pool and sundeck with sea views along with a computer corner, 24-hour front desk service, and umbrellas and lounge chairs available for rent. The classically decorated suites, stylish studios, and lofts have flat-screen TVs and coffeemakers; some have balconies with sea views and kitchenettes. Guests complain about cleanliness consistency in rooms and the occasional worn fixture. The Savoy Hotel, with higher rated rooms, may be an alternative choice. 

Viscay Hotel

The 18-room Viscay Hotel is a no-frills, mid-range property in the historic Art Deco district of South Beach, a quick one-block walk to the beach. Classically decorated rooms have flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges; suites offer kitchenettes and sitting areas. Some guests complain about the functional furnishings and dated decor in some rooms and common areas. Most ignore the plain interior designs in exchange for affordable prices and a central South Beach location. Another possibility may be The Fritz Hotel, located nearby. Wi-Fi and continental breakfast are both free. 

San Juan Hotel

The 75-room San Juan Hotel is a centrally located value hotel within easy walking distance of local attractions, bars, restaurants, and Anchor Shops. For those with a bit more money to spend check rates at The Surfcomber Hotel, it has a pool and beach access. 

Winter Haven, Autograph Collection

A member of Marriott's Autograph Collection, the 70-room Winter Haven is a upper-middle-range hotel located across from the beach, on a quiet but still central stretch of Ocean Drive. Access to the Blue Moon's pool five blocks away, free beach chairs, and free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel makes the Winter Haven a solid value -- and contemporary guest rooms make it a stylish pick as well. For a similar boutique with larger rooms, check out the Edgewater South Beach next door.

The 34-room Ocean Reef Suites is a centrally located mid-range hotel within walking distance of the beach. Rooms are large and have small kitchen areas with microwaves, coffeemakers, mini-fridges, portable burners, and toasters; however, some guests complain that some rooms have a musty smell and suffer from loud street noise. The Flow Cafe offers healthy dishes for breakfast through dinner and there's a 24/7 convenience store on-site with snacks, drinks, and pastries. Freebies include hotel-wide Wi-Fi and a free airport shuttle. There's no pool or self-park lot; guests have the option of parking on the street or paying extra for valet service.

Villa Paradiso

The 17-room Villa Paradiso is an exceptionally located boutique hotel within walking distance of many of South Beach's attractions, bars, restaurants, and shops. Charming rooms are functional and come with hardwood floors and fully-equipped kitchens, although some have small bathrooms. Amenities are limited, there is a courtyard area with comfortable seating and plants and the hotel offers concierge services, free Wi-Fi, and free beach towels. However, there's no on-site parking and the lack of elevators may prove problematic for guests with compromised mobility. 

Nautilus Sonesta Miami Beach

The 250-room Nautilus Sonesta Miami Beach is an upscale beachfront property with chic interiors that attracts hip, young travelers wishing to be close to South Beach. It hits all the markers for a trendy hot spot, including stylish dining helmed by a celebrity chef, an attractive pool area with swanky cabanas and luxe padded loungers, and elegant guest rooms equipped with modern comforts like Nespresso machines, bluetooth docking stations, and minibars stocked with gourmet snacks and beverages. Downsides include small bathrooms -- but they have nice rainfall showers and REN toiletries -- and street noise in some rooms. A small fitness center, spa treatments, a lobby bar, and a hip meeting space round out the facilities here. For an alternative in the area, check out Redbury South Beach, which offers bigger bathrooms -- but it's not as stylish and the pool is small.
