Four Points by Sheraton Miami Beach
4343 Collins Ave

A midsize, mid-range hotel in Miami Beach, the Four Points by Sheraton Miami Beach is middling in just about every sense. But it's got boardwalk access to the sandy beach, and you get a pool with a sun deck plus free Wi-Fi. Rooms were renovated in 2013 so they look fresh and are spotlessly clean -- with some ocean views from semi-private balconies. For the price, this is an OK option outside of South Beach. Otherwise, go for the nearby Courtyard by Marriott Oceanfront for many of the same features but more Art Deco style.

The Redbury South Beach
1776 Collins Ave

With a spacious rooftop pool offering incredible views, a restaurant with a bold Mediterranean menu, and large contemporary guest rooms, The Redbury South Beach is a beautiful, upscale boutique hotel located right in the center of South Beach. Decorated in a bright Art Deco style, with clean lines and lovely outdoor spaces, this property offers guests direct access to the beach, as well as a wide variety of restaurants, shops, and entertainment options within walking distance. Guests have access to private beach facilities and a fitness center through the hotel’s sister properties, as well as restaurants and nightlife options around the city. Due to the central location some rooms can be a bit noisy, and there is a resort fee (covering in-room Wi-Fi access) as well as a fee for valet parking.

Crest Hotel Suites
1670 James Ave

Location is the main selling point of the Crest Hotel Suites: Just a block from the ocean, steps from Lincoln Road, and in the South Beach Art Deco district, it offers a great home base for families and couples exploring Miami. Basic and clean is the theme of both public spaces and guest rooms, thought the outdoor pool area is slightly grungier than the rest of the property. Each of the 66 rooms have flat-screen TVs and hair dryers; suites also have kitchens and dining areas. The on-site cafe is a popular feature for guests to gather and the hotel offers beach club access including lounge chair, umbrella, and cabana rentals. Otherwise, there are few amenities.

Casa Faena
3500 Collins Ave, Faena District

Opening its doors in 1928, the 50-room Casa Claridge is a Spanish Colonial property across from the beach, removed from South Beach’s party scene, with charming interiors, arched architectural designs, and modern artwork in the atrium and library. Cocktail parties can be held on the rooftop terrace with partial ocean views and Cafe Claridge’s -- with American and Argentinian fare -- can also be reserved for private events. Mid-century modern rooms have balconies; suites offer living rooms and studios have rooftop terraces. Before booking, travelers may want to consider the centrally located Fritz Hotel, which has a pool.

The Celino South Beach
640 Ocean Dr

Last renovated more than 20 years ago, the Park Central unfortunately gives off the sense that its best days are behind it -- for the second time in its life. The pool, grounds, and decor all need updating, and the front-desk staff seems unhappy to be there. On the upside, the rooms are clean and reasonably priced -- and hey, it's right across the street from one of the most famous beaches in the world.

Crescent Resort On South Beach
1420 Ocean Dr

The 25-room Crescent Resort On South Beach is a mid-range Art Deco boutique on Ocean Drive across from Lummus Park and the palm-shaded beach. It has an appealing list of features, including a rooftop terrace with sea views, a small gym, concierge services, and an ATM. One- and two-bedroom suites and a penthouse have flat-screen TVs, kitchens, and whirlpool tubs, but decor can be on the plain side (though artistic details such as colorful paintings and blue accent walls are nice touches). Wi-Fi is available throughout, and included in the resort fee. More upscale hotels can be found in South Beach in this price range, but without the Crescent's in-room kitchens.

SoBe Hostel
235 Washington Ave

A budget hostel, South Beach Hostel -- on the southernmost end of South Beach -- is an inexpensive alternative in a pricey party town, and it's cleaner and newer than most hostels. It has all the usual hostel amenities, including four- and eight-bed dorms, small private rooms, lounge space, and a communal kitchen. Extras include laundry facilities, an Internet cafe, free Wi-Fi, an outdoor terrace, bicycle rentals, free continental breakfast, free dinner, and a free airport shuttle. The scene is young, international, and social: the popular hostel bar stays open until the early hours of the morning, running frequent happy hours and hosting beer-pong tournaments.  However, there are some drawbacks: beds aren’t the most comfortable, many rooms are windowless, and Wi-Fi is only available in common areas.

Beach Place Hotel

The Beach Place Hotel is a no-frills option within walking distance of a quiet beach, but well removed from the glitzy Miami center. This budget property's 53 rooms are starting to show signs of wear and tear, and have coffeemakers and mini-fridges; some have kitchenettes with microwaves and sinks. There's an outdoor pool with loungers, and palm trees throughout the grounds lend a beach-appropriate vibe. The surrounding neighborhood is quiet, and certainly more family-friendly than party-friendly, but there are bus stops out front for those who want to reach South Beach or downtown. Parking and Wi-Fi are free. The nearby Miami Beach Days Inn North Beach has similar amenities as well as an on-site restaurant and bar, for a slightly higher rate.

Ocean Surf
7436 Ocean Ter

The Ocean Surf Blue is across from a great beach, has a cool Art Deco facade, and is a short walk to a bus stop. But the 50 rooms in this value hotel could use a refresh -- the carpeting is worn, the furniture is stained, and the bathroom fixtures are rusty. Guests have complained about the cleaning. The hotel offers free Wi-Fi and breakfast. Guests might also want to check out the Hawaii Hotel next door.

The Mantell Plaza
255 W 24th St

The Mantell Plaza is an upper-middle-range vacation condo complex with 11 individually decorated studio and one-bedroom apartments with full kitchens and colorful, modern decor. The Art Deco jewel box-style building sits in a quiet, residential neighborhood within five minutes' walk of the beach, and close to public transportation for travel into the heart of South Beach. The property's beautiful tropical gardens, relaxing outdoor pool, and fitness and laundry facilities make it a lovely place for longer stays, though parking can be a hassle and some apartments are oddly configured. Guests seeking a livelier atmosphere may want to check out Crest Hotel Suites in South Beach.
