NH Collection Paseo del Prado
Plaza Canovas del Castillo 4 Barrio de Las Letras

Located across the street from El Prado Museum and walking distance to all major attractions, the 113-room NH Collection Paseo del Prado is a beautiful upscale hotel with a quiet atmosphere and great services. Rooms are classic and elegant, featuring espresso machines, free Wi-Fi, minibars, and wonderful rainfall showers. Some have huge windows overlooking Neptuno Square, but most overlook a courtyard, which makes them a tad darker. The restaurant serves a modern tapas menu by Michelin-starred chef Paco Roncero, while Suite & Tea offers a great afternoon tea service in a charming room with comfortable seating and soothing music. The rooftop gym is small but well-equipped, and it features stunning 360-degree city views. Travelers seeking something more decadent may prefer the neighboring Westin Palace, Madrid.

Hotel Catalonia Plaza Mayor

The spacious rooms at the Catalonia Plaza Mayor have a fresh, uncluttered feel, with minimalist furnishings, few adornments, and flat-screen TVs mounted on the walls. Bathrooms are outstanding -- highlights include the huge rain showers and streamlined modern fixtures. The public areas of the hotel are just as sleekly designed: The lobby, cafe, and fitness area (though it's small and a little dark) all have a hip vibe. If you're exploring Madrid on foot for the first time, this hotel -- located in happening Huertas -- is a great place to stay.

Vincci Capitol Hotel

This upscale, 143-room Art Deco hotel is in one of Madrid's most recognizable buildings, built in 1933, shaped like the bow of a ship, topped with the iconic Schweppes sign that dominates the city skyline. Decor in rooms and common spaces maintains the Art Deco aesthetic, though some guests report the occasional maintenance issue in the rooms. The location is ideal for sightseeing and experiencing the city's vibrant nightlife. The Vincci Capitol shares the building with a bona fide movie palace, and works hard to give guests the movie star experience.

Hotel Ritz, Madrid
Plaza de la Lealtad 5

The 104-year old, 167-room Hotel Ritz Madrid is one of the city's iconic luxury properties. Originally designed to look like a palace, the hotel's high-end interiors and top-notch service have made it a popular destination for celebrities and notable names. Ideally located adjacent to Retiro Park and overlooking the Museo Prado, and within walking distance to many of the city's attractions, the Ritz suits business travelers and well-heeled tourists. But the experience definitely comes at cost.

Hospedaje Romero
Gran Via Street 64, 6th Floor Right

The seven-room Hospedaje Romero is a tiny inn offering excellent value in the heart of the city center. Its rooms are basic but clean, and have solid amenities such as free Wi-Fi and mini-fridges. A couple of units share a bathroom with a shower/tub combo, but all others have private baths with showers, hairdryers, and toiletries. There are no amenities whatsoever -- not even breakfast is served here -- but there are plenty of restaurants, bars and cafes within a couple of blocks of the property. Rates are some of the lowest in central Madrid, and location within walking distance of all major attractions, including Sol, Plaza Mayor, and the Royal Palace, is hard to beat. Oriental Hostal has similar rates and is a little bit more contemporary.

BEST WESTERN Carlos V
5 Calle del Maestro Victoria Centro Madrid

The Best Western Carlos V is classic, chain-style European city hotel that is centrally located a couple of blocks from Madrid's Puerta del Sol. While the rooms are a good value, if small and basic, there’s a small fee for some amenities, including the buffet breakfast, in-room safes, and hotel shuttle bus. There are a variety of bed options, and rooms at the back of the hotel are a bit quieter, although many of those look out on an air shaft. There’s also a classically decorated bar and lounge, and, while the hotel is well kept, it has a tired feel. The hotel is a good choice for unfussy travelers looking for a pleasant, clean, and convenient place to stay, but those looking for something a little more modern and stylish could try the Praktik Metropol.

Hotel Room Mate Alicia

This 37-room boutique is part of a stylish yet affordable chain that offers a youthful, playful design at a good price. All rooms have pops of bright blue, yellow, or red, along with modern furniture, sleek track lighting, and Roy Lichtenstein prints. Bathrooms are also modern, though the showers and tubs lack privacy and are quite revealing (some showers are in the room while some tubs have direct street views). The Duplex is a hip upgrade, with a spacious living room, big outdoor balcony, and mini pool. Conveniently located near Plaza Santa Ana, this hotel offers comfortable rooms with high ceilings and lots of natural light, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and minibars. However, there is no bar or fitness center on-site.

Hyatt Regency Hesperia Madrid
Paseo de la Castellana, 57 Chamberi

The 169-room Hyatt Regency Hesperia Madrid is a stylish business hotel best known for its two-Michelin star Santceloni restaurant and beautiful interior design. Spacious, comfortable rooms have classic decor and excellent amenities such as free Wi-Fi, LCD TVs with speakers in the bathroom, Nespresso machines, and Egyptian cotton linens. While the outstanding restaurants are the highlight here, the hotel also features a wonderful rooftop fitness center and a popular lobby bar with jazz nights. Guests are offered discounted rates at a high-end fitness and wellness center located around the corner, but the hotel lacks a spa. The location, a 15-minute metro ride from both the city center and the financial district, makes it a reasonably convenient pick for business and leisure travelers alike, but those looking to stay within walking distance of major attractions may want to consider the NH Palacio de Tepa.

Hotel Paseo del Arte

The Paseo Del Arte is a three-and-a-half pearl hotel set on a busy street in the central Art Triangle District of Madrid, named after its proximity to three art museums including Museo del Prado. The 260 guest rooms and suites are smart and modern from 2016 renovations, with some opening to spacious roof-line terraces. Other than meeting facilities, a small gym, and a bright and colorful breakfast room, the hotel offers little else, though those arriving by car will also find the underground car park convenient. It's all perfectly well-groomed and functional, though lacking much in the way of pizzazz. For that, those prepared to splash out a little more should consider the much more elegant NH National just around the corner.

Hotel Urban

The boutique Hotel Urban is a luxurious hotel with a long list of features. Not only does it feature a lovely rooftop pool lined by lounge chairs, it is also home to a small fitness center, two swanky restaurants and a bar, and even a museum area of ancient antiques. The 102 rooms, however, aren't as impressive as the rest of the hotel. Sure, they're spacious and include large flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi access (the first hour is free), but the decor is relatively bland: Furniture shows some wear and tear, the beds feature shiny bronze bedspreads, and the lack of color give them a masculine-bordering-on-boring look. Nonetheless, Hotel Urban remains a solid pick, in part due to its convenient location in the heart of Madrid, within walking distance of restaurants, shops, and nearly every main sight the city has to offer.
