Holiday Inn Golden Mile Hong Kong
50 Nathan Road Tsimshatsui, Kowloon

Your typical highway-adjacent Holiday Inn, this certainly is not. Instead, this upper-middle-range property offers great value for the money, and has a wealth of features includes a pool, gym, and multiple popular dining venues. That's all packed into a bustling, lively property right in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui, which blazes with streetlife day and night. The 614 rooms are simple, but fresh and modern, with Handy Phones, mini-fridges, closet space, and large flat-screen TVs. Those with Club-level bookings get access to free breakfast, a massive snack and cocktail spread, and the attractive ExecutiveClub Lounge, which is one of the city's largest. If you're seeking something with a slightly more polished style, opt for the Hyatt Regency Tsim Sha Tsui, which is across the street.

YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel
Block 41 Shek Kip Mei Estate, Sham Shui Po, Kowloon

Don't let this hotel's name put you off. In many ways the YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel exceeds almost any other hostel in Hong Kong. Most of the 129 units here are proper mid-range hotel rooms, though individual beds can be booked in dorm-style units as well. All include air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and en-suite bathrooms. The MTR is less than 10 minutes away on foot, and the authentically local Sham Shui Po neighborhood is just down the road. Other features include on-site dining, lounges, and a kitchen. History is a major deal here, and the fascinating on-site museum chronicles the property's major role in Hong Kong's history. Rates here are hard to beat for this quality, but if you want a more central option check out the Hop Inn, though you'll sacrifice on amenities.

Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong
8 Finance Street, Central

The five-pearl Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong exudes luxury and elegance in an ideal location next to Victoria Harbor and connected to the IFC shopping mall. Multiple pools, a spa, a number of high-class dining options, and a fitness center are some of the most attractive features for couples. Business travelers can utilize the free Wi-Fi, luxury meeting spaces, and a 24-hour business center. The 399 serene rooms, with Western or Chinese design, are spacious and elegant in their decor; they include a flat-screen TV, minibar, and free bottled water and fruit, plus the option of harbor-facing views. For those looking for a similar five-pearl experience, it may be worth comparing rates with the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong.

Royal Pacific Hotel

The Royal Pacific Hotel & Towers is a large, three-and-a-half-pearl property, with a prime location between Victoria Harbour and Kowloon Park. Its address is its strongest asset -- the hotel is connected to the Hong Kong China Ferry Terminal and is surrounded by oodles of high-end shopping. All 673 contemporary guest rooms have flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi, and many offer views of Victoria Harbour. Standout features include multiple on-site restaurants -- although breakfast isn't included in all rates -- and a 24-hour gym. Families with children might consider the nearby Prince (Marco Polo Hotels), since it has a kids' club and free access to a pool at a nearby sister hotel.

The Cityview

The 422-room upper-middle-range Cityview Hong Kong is centrally located a five-minute walk from the nearest MTR station and close to markets and restaurants. Its rooms are bright, fresh, and pleasant, if on the small side, though old-wing rooms are notably more dated than those recently refurbished. The hotel has three restaurants and offers a good breakfast buffet, though this is not included. Wi-Fi is free and generally reliable, plus some rooms have free use of 3G-enabled smartphones, and guests can access the pool and gym facilities at the neighboring YMCA. A free shuttle bus service runs to and from a train station convenient for Hong Kong’s airport. Another property worth considering in the Yau Ma Tei area is the three-pearl Casa Deluxe, which can have lower rates.

Butterfly On Morrison
39 Morrison Hill Road Causeway Bay

Located in the lively Causeway Bay area, the upper-middle-range Butterfly on Morrison offers a stylish vibe, modern guest rooms with contemporary furniture, and views of Happy Valley Racecourse as its highlights. The property is just a few minutes' walk to Causeway Bay MTR subway station, and there's a bus stop outside the door. The 98 rooms are stylish, with contemporary decor, modern bathrooms, and useful gadgets like multimedia docks, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and smartphones that include free local calls and 3G data. Room rates are competitive, but for only slightly higher rates, Hotel Jen Hong Kong has a rooftop pool and a 24-hour fitness center.

Rosedale Hotel Kowloon
8 Shelter Street Causeway Bay

The 435-room Rosedale Hotel Kowloon is a modern, upscale hotel popular with both business and leisure travelers. The hotel is located in Tai Kok Tsui, with ample shopping and dining opportunities nearby. Rooms are on the small side, but are stylish and offer gorgeous skyline views along with wall-mounted flat-screen TVs. There’s a sharp restaurant on-site with cool, artistic accents and a rooftop bar and lounge that serves barbecue and offers views of Victoria Harbour. There’s also a small fitness center and a free shuttle to the Kowloon MTR Station and Olympian Mall. Guests may want to skip the limited breakfast if it's not included in the room rate. Those who don't mind being further from the main attractions may want to check out Ovolo Southside - 64 Wong Chuk Hang Road, an upscale hotel with a free breakfast and generous happy hour.

Xi Hotel

The Xi Hotel is a basic mid-range option that has one of the best locations in Tsim Sha Tsui. It sits on a relatively quiet street, around the corner from the trendy K11 Art Mall and the Hyatt Regency. While features are few -- limited to free continental breakfasts, a wine bar, and an attractive meeting area -- the hotel is popular with families from mainland China and international travelers seeking reasonable rates. The 64 rooms are modern, quiet, and clean, through some are worn and they are dark. Free Handy Phones and Wi-Fi are helpful perks, and most rooms include sofabeds for families. If you have a bit more money to spare, the Holiday Inn Golden Mile is a more attractive alternative with far more features on-site.

The Fleming, Hong Kong
No.41 Fleming Road, Wan Chai

The Fleming is one of the most impeccably styled hotels that we saw on our 2018 trip to Hong Kong. Packed with bespoke details, it's a solid upmarket pick for travelers wanting to base themselves in up-and-coming Wan Chai. Modeled on the Star Ferry steamers of yore, the 66 sharp rooms include hardwood, marble, and brass details plus large Apple TVs, Handy Phones, and gorgeous apothecary-inspired bathrooms with rainfall showers. Unfortunately, the views onto a neighboring highway aren't the greatest, and lighting may be a bit dark for some travelers. The restaurant downstairs, Osteria Marzia, is a destination in its own right and buzzes with locals day and night. For a boutique option in trendy Sheung Wan instead, check out The Putman, though it has a less bespoke look.

Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers
20 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui Kowloon

The 782-room Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers, first opened in 1974, is both one of the older and larger hotels in Hong Kong. Its busy Tsim Sha Tsui location is great for tourists and shoppers, and also offers one of the best uninterrupted views of the harbor in the city. A 2014 makeover has given the property a swanky upgrade, though room decor is on the minimal side. In-room amenities -- 40-inch flat-screen TVs, stocked minibars, electric kettles, and smartphone loan -- are suitably high-end. A charge for Wi-Fi for most guests is an annoyance though a heated rooftop pool plus hot tub is an excellent touch. Rates are also pretty fair for a luxury hotel, though it's also worth considering the hip, futuristic, and similarly priced Mira Hong Kong.
