Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel & Suites
King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street

The 232-room Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel & Suites is an upscale apart-hotel complex housed in a towering 59-floor block in Dubai's Marina District. While units are smart, modern, and clean with separate lounge areas and fully equipped kitchens, they're a bit generic. Views from the hotel's 52nd floor Observatory bar and restaurant are particularly memorable though the small on-site swimming pool is rather underwhelming. Overall, it's a solid option for visitors looking for apartment-style accommodation with easy access to beaches and business zone. There is a pesky fee for Wi-Fi.

Four Points By Sheraton Downtown Dubai
Mankhool Road, 4C Street, Bur Dubai

The upscale 250-room Four Points by Sheraton Downtown Dubai is centrally located, with warm and inviting rooms, a rooftop pool, a modern fitness center surrounded by windows, three restaurants, and free shuttle service to sights around Dubai. While the hotel doesn't lack for on-site conveniences (although the hotel's restaurants are at best mediocre, especially when compared with local choices), guests looking to stay closer to The Walk and Marina Beach may want to try the Hilton Dubai The Walk for similarly priced rooms and similar amenities, within a block of the Persian Gulf.

Le Meridien Fairway
Al Garhoud Bridge, Sheikh Rashid Road, 29; PO Box 36400

This 58-room airport hotel is a fairly nice, upper-middle-range version of the standard stopover hotel. Traditional room decor is a little out of date but the gym and pool are pleasing enough. And if the layover permits, a five-minute drive to the luxurious Le Meridien Dubai (open to all guests of Le Meridien Fairway) will dress up your stay quite a bit. Those willing to go up in price a little bit may prefer a stay in Le Meridien Duabi's stylish Royal Club Rooms. All in all, though, this is a good value for a short stay.

Grand Excelsior Hotel Deira
Al Muteena Street, Deira

The Sheraton Deira Hotel is an upscale, business hotel located in the north end of Dubai, right under the airport's flight path. While the hotel encourages aviation enthusiasts to spot planes from the rooftop, some guests might find the roaring noise of jet planes too much. Rooms, however, are well-soundproofed -- at least from external noise -- with good amenities and comfy beds. Although the location's not great for tourists, rates are good for this level of hotel and it's not a bad option for those wanting proximity to the airport.

Movenpick Hotel Jumeirah Lakes Towers
Cluster A,Building 2، Jumeirah Lake Towers, Cluster A – Jumeirah Lakes Towers

Amid Jumeirah Lakes' skyscrapers, the Movenpick Hotel Jumeirah Lakes Towers is an upscale property with modern, but generic interiors. Though well-placed for nearby office complexes and the marina, the hotel is a little out-of-the-way for reaching Dubai's main attractions. The 357 rooms are large, and come with satellite flat-screen TVs, minibars, and Movenpick chocolates, which there's plenty more of during the daily Chocolate Hour. A restaurant serving international fare and a sensational breakfast accompanies a sports bar, plus there's a 24-hour coffee shop. The rooftop pool and terrace is sleek, and a spa and fitness center provide more wellness options. Meeting rooms cater to corporate guests, and free shuttles are handy for leisure travelers. The JA Ocean View Hotel is nearer the beach, but charges for parking.

Panorama Grand Hotel
31 Khalid Bin Al Waleed Rd, PO Box 773

The 103-room Panorama Grand Hotel is a dated mid-range property located in the older area of Bur Dubai, close to numerous restaurants, shops, and Dubai Creek. Major attractions such as the Burj Khalifa and Mall of the Emirates are between a 15- and 30-minute drive away. The old-fashioned rooms are showing some wear and reportedly suffer from noise, but quality amenities include minibars, flat-screen TVs, desks, and kettles. An Asian restaurant, two nightclubs, and a sports bar are on-site and receive average reviews, and most rates include breakfast with lots of Indian dishes. There are no pool or wellness facilities here, and in-room Wi-Fi requires a fee. It's worth paying slightly more for the Citymax Bur Dubai, which has a rooftop pool, modern gym, and more contemporary rooms.

JA Palm Tree Court
Tariq Bin Ziyad Rd, PO Box 9255

The 208-suite luxury JA Palm Tree Court offers enormous rooms in a villa-style setting within beautifully landscaped grounds along a private beach. The sophisticated yet laid-back resort is well outside central Dubai, but it has plenty of entertainment and dining choices on-site, along with golf and water sports, three swimming pools with swim-up bars, a spa, and fitness center. Families will find loads of kid-friendly features, including in-room PlayStations as well as kids' and teens' clubs, separate kiddy pools, and day care services. Guests looking to stay closer to central Dubai may want to try Grosvenor House Dubai, located near trendy Marina Beach, though it does not have its own private beach.

Jumeira Rotana
2nd December Street, 3a Street, Al Badaa

This three-and-a-half-pearl outpost of the Rotana hotel chain has a misleading name, as its location in an older part of Dubai is a good 25-minute drive from the Jumeirah Beach area and most other tourist attractions. Interiors are contemporary and clean, and the 125 rooms are large and comfortable (though fees apply for Wi-Fi). There are two restaurants, including a bar, and the pool, gym, and spa areas are all small -- but well-maintained. The Jumeira Rotana mostly attracts business travelers and families, and it’s perfectly adequate as a functional and pleasant place to stay. However, the property doesn’t offer anything special over other hotels by way of aesthetics or amenities. The Flora Park Deluxe Hotel Apartments are a good alternative for apartment-style rooms with laundry facilities near the airport.

Media One Hotel Dubai
Dubai Media City, Plot No. 1, Behind American University

Opened in 2009, this four-pearl high-rise hotel has a split personality. On one hand it’s an upscale corporate option with well-equipped meeting rooms, a staffed business center and a convenient location in Dubai’s Media City district; on the other it’s a hip, buzz-worthy place that brings a bit of Ibiza to the Middle East (imagine poolside revelers and thumping beats provided by guest DJs). Media One's 260 rooms strike a compromise between these poles, toning down the flash and instead using a neutral palette and natural materials to create a soothing environment. Stylish eateries and a solid list of on-site services round out the offerings. But if you’re looking for an area hotel with a more subdued ambiance -- or simply a more familiar name -- consider the Radisson Blu Dubai Media City.

Armada BlueBay
Armada Tower – Jumeirah Lake Towers, Sheikh Zayed Road

Armada BlueBay is an upper-middle-range hotel with a scenic Jumeirah Lakes location, though slightly generic interiors. It's well-placed for nearby office areas and the metro, but the hotel is a little further out from Dubai's main attractions. The 350 rooms come with amenities like flat-screen TVs, minibars, free Wi-Fi, and some balconies. A restaurant serving international and local fare and buffet breakfast and lunch (not included in all rates) accompanies a sports bar; plus there's a terrace bar next to the outdoor pool. The three basement restaurants (third-party owned) are a major highlight here. A fitness center and medical women's only spa are available. The conference room caters to corporate guests, and free shuttles to Marina Mall and JBR Beach are popular among leisure travelers. As an alternative, Marina Byblos Hotel is closer to the beach and more modern.
