The Ritz-Carlton, Los Angeles

With spacious, beautiful rooms, a rooftop pool, a full-service spa, and tasteful, contemporary decor, this hotel delivers the level of luxury you'd expect from a Ritz. Its downtown location in the L.A. Live entertainment complex means you're close to numerous restaurants, a movie theater and sports games in the adjacent Staples Center, but you'll have to drive to see L.A.'s most popular tourist sites.

The NoMad Hotel Los Angeles

Opened in 2018, the upscale NoMad Hotel Los Angels resides in the Neoclassical 1920s headquarters for The Bank of Italy. The gold and blue Italianate lobby ceiling has been completely restored and it serves a design inspiration throughout the impeccably styled public spaces and 241 rooms and suites. The Rooftop is the place to be, it's complete with a small cafe, hip swimming pool, and bar with a fun cocktail list. Back downstairs, The Restaurant, The Coffee Bar, and Giannini Bar were each impeccably designed with Italian influences and Californian menus. Single travelers should be comfortable in entry level Superieur Rooms, but couples will appreciate the extra square feet in Atelier Rooms. The over-the-top design and hip atmosphere can be too much for some. If that's the case for you, check rates at the business-friendly skyscraper InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown

Miyako Hotel Los Angeles

Located in downtown L.A. a short drive from the Dodgers Stadium and Staples Center, the Miyako Hotel is a 173-room mid-range property with a serene spa. Renovated rooms have pretty Asian-inspired decor while un-renovated rooms show some wear and tear. A fun location in Little Tokyo is near many restaurants and shops and on-site there is a restaurant, bar, karaoke lounge, and grab-and-go coffee shop.

JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE

Built in early 2010, this 878-room hotel offers a beautiful pool, great views from the rooftop bar, tons of meeting space, and plenty of restaurants. Although the L.A. Live Center is a huge hub in downtown Los Angeles (home to the Staples Center and Nokia Theater), the neighborhood is far from most other tourist attractions.

Kimpton Hotel Wilshire

The Hotel Wilshire, a Kimpton Boutique, is a chic, 74-room business-oriented hotel located near (but not in) Beverly Hills. Rooms have a modern design and up-to-date technology, and bathrooms shine with contemporary fixtures and Lather bath products. The hotel may not have much as far features -- there's no fitness center or spa -- there is a rooftop pool area with restaurant and bar, ample lounge space, and panoramic views of downtown and the Hollywood Hills. Since its transition to a Kimpton property in 2012, the hotel has added a bevy of new extras, including a nightly wine reception, animal print robes, in-room wellness services, free Wi-Fi for Kimpton InTouch members (a program which is free to join), pet-friendly practices, and the Kimpton EarthCare program, which garnered the hotel a Silver LEED certification.

Hotel Figueroa

The Hotel Figueroa underwent a two-year renovation and reopened in 2018. We will update our photographs and review as soon as possible.

The Los Angeles Athletic Club Hotel

This upscale Los Angeles Historic Landmark hotel is steeped in history -- Charlie Chaplin even lived here for seven years in the prime of his career. Built in the 1880s, it offers rooms with a classic gentleman's club feel, along with premiere access to the vast 88,000-square-foot Los Angeles Athletic Club facilities -- which include a pool, squash/racquetball/basketball courts, and a full fitness center. The property is the site of many "Mad Men"episodes (it stood in for the New York Athletic Club), a reference that speaks to the vibe: classy and quiet with a large business clientele. Rooms are spacious but masculine with comfortable beds, antique accents, and modern amenities (free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs). The downtown Los Angeles location is convenient for business travelers and those heading to events at the Staples Center or Nokia Theatre.

The L.A. Grand Hotel Downtown

The upscale, business-friendly LA Downtown Hotel is in an ideal spot for those looking to be near downtown L.A.'s emerging scene. The hotel has 469 spacious, stylish rooms with flat-screen TVs and MP3 player alarm clocks. Its restaurant offers all-day dining and is complemented by a lobby bar that serves drinks and food. A large fitness center and pool are notable, but corporate amenities like a 24-hour business center and 25,000 square feet of event space draw many guests. Wi-Fi isn’t free, though, and valet parking is costly. Guests may want to consider The Hotel Wilshire, a Kimpton Boutique, which has an attractive rooftop with a bar and pool, and free evening wine receptions.

Stay on Main Hotel and Hostel
640 Main Street Downtown Los Angeles Los Angeles

When price is a priority, Stay on Main Hotel and Hostel delivers. Decor in the public spaces is attractive, particularly for the price. The 138-room high-rise offers a variety of accommodations from a single bed in a six-person dorm room to a private room either with either an en-suite or shared bathroom; most have colorful accents and quirky touches. Thrifty travelers looking for a downtown location with easy access to popular tourist destinations should be satisfied. The hotel does not have air-conditioning, though there are fans in every room. If that’s a deal-breaker, consider The Stillwater, which has 232 air-conditioned rooms and is a ten minute walk to the Nokia Theatre, Staples Center and LA Convention Center.

Super 8 by Wyndham Los Angeles Downtown

The 35-room Super 8 Motel Los Angeles Downtown is a simple, clean, budget motel with spacious rooms. While there is little decoration, the motel is bright and comfortable. Rooms are large and decorated in yellows and greens, and all come with coffeemakers, mini-fridges, microwaves, and TVs. The hotel offers free parking, free Wi-Fi, and free continental breakfast to all guests, but there's no pool, gym, or full restaurant.
