However, there’s a lack of facilities -- no spa or fitness center -- compared to its competitors. Alternatively, the nearby Hotel R de Paris adds a hammam and small fitness center, though you'll shell out far more.

The hotel is surrounded by high-end stores and boutiques, and within easy reach of central Paris' many museums. Ornate Grand Siecle decor runs throughout this hotel and almost every surface is covered in period accents, from the granite clad lobby to the antique fixtures and artwork in classically outfitted guest rooms. Room also feature flat-screen TVs and air-conditioning, and the hotel offers a chic restaurant and bar serving gourmet French cuisine and cocktails. For a more modern take on antique decor, guests should check out La Maison Favart, where rates are significantly less expensive for similar four-pearl features.

The mid-range Residence Champ De Mars enjoys a lovely location near Paris’s most noteworthy attraction: the Eiffel Tower. The atmosphere at the hotel is modern and more like an apartment building than a hotel. The 25 rooms are clean and stylish; they feature flat-screen TVs and coffeemakers. The apartments and studios offer kitchenettes. Unfortunately, all units lack air-conditioning and walls are thin. Perks are limited to free Wi-Fi and an outdoor courtyard, as there is no restaurant, bar, breakfast, or gym on-site. For about the same price, guests can get more amenities at the nearby Eiffel River Gauche which offers breakfast, a free cheese and wine hour, and a computer in the lobby. 

A good fit for business travelers and leisure tourists alike, Radisson Blu Hotel Champs Elysées is an upscale, chain hotel in an excellent location near the Arc de Triomphe and Champs Elysees. Its 46 modern rooms get twice-daily cleanings and are equipped with minibars, coffee/tea facilities, free Wi-Fi, and spacious modern bathrooms. There’s an elegant restaurant on-site with outdoor seating and a chic bar with a fireplace, plus an English breakfast is included in most room rates. Amenities are fairly limited, however, for a four-pearl hotel (that's billed as five-star). For added features like a fitness center and pool, travelers might want to consider the Saint James & Albany Hotel-Spa or the Hotel Felicien by Elegancia.

The 85-room Opera Cadet Hotel is set on a pedestrian-friendly side street in the center of Paris. The location is one of its best assets, as interiors are nondescript at best and blandly dated at worst. Rooms have nearly floor-to-ceiling windows that let in lots of light, plus work desks, minibars, and free coffee and tea. However, rooms are poorly soundproofed and suffer from small maintenance snags on top of datedness issues. Three- and four-person rooms, plus suites, are available for larger groups, and most rates include breakfast, which is extensive, well-reviewed, and features local products. If you care about style and scene, consider the nearby Hoxton, Paris instead.

Housed in a 19th-century Haussmann-style building, the W Paris is chic, hip, and luxurious. It's in the conveniently close to many of the Right Bank's best-known attractions, including the Palais Garnier, home of the Paris Opera. The 91 rooms are modern but can be small, dark, and a bit quirky, with minimalist decor and open-plan bathrooms. Features include a 24-hour gym, an on-site nightclub, and a trendy restaurant. For a youthful vibe with a more authentic Parisian feel, consider the lovely and slightly cheaper Hotel De Nell nearby instead.  

The mid-range Hotel Excelsior Latin is a 66-room boutique hotel situated in the Latin Quarter, just off the busy cafe- and shop-lined Boulevard St. Michel. Inviting interiors mix Parisian elegance with doses of rustic charm in this 18th-century property, where period pieces and portrait paintings couple with bare stone walls and exposed wood beams. Part budget hotel and part hostel, the Smart Place Paris offers a youthful vibe and exceptional prices for a property in Paris' 10th Arrondissement, a four-minute walk from the Gare du Nord and within a 20-minute walk of Montmartre. Rooms are fairly clean, but small and built for function, ranging from private doubles to 10-person dorms with bunk beds and en-suite bathrooms. The industrial-style lobby includes a small bar, a kitchen available for guest use, long wood tables, books, games, and a foosball table. Smart Place has free Wi-Fi, but doesn't offer breakfast. Travelers may want to compare rates with the nearby Hotel Altona, which has nicer rooms.
