Harbor Reef Hotel
Del Hotel Cafe De Paris 400 Suroeste y 150 al Este, 400 m West and 200 m South of Cafe de Paris

Harbor Reef Hotel is a quiet mid-range hotel that epitomizes Nosara’s laid-back lifestyle. The lushly landscaped property feels perfectly Costa Rican, with thatched roofs, hammocks, and howler monkeys playing in the trees. There’s a tiny pool with a swim-up bar and an open-air restaurant that serves healthy-ish meals. Nosara’s main attraction, Playa Guiones, is a five-minute walk from the hotel. The property's rooms are simply decorated in playful shades of red and green, but lack proper lighting and feel a bit plain. Travelers looking for a hotel with a bit more flair might prefer Harbor Reef’s sister property, The Harmony Hotel, which has nicer rooms and more amenities for pricier nightly rates.

The Harmony Hotel
Guiones Beach

Chic retro decor and a happening atmosphere make upscale The Harmony Hotel one of Nosara’s most sought after spots. The hotel’s juice bar and open-air yoga shalas attract health conscious guests during the day, while its trendy restaurant, sushi lounge, juice bar, and cocktail bar are popular nighttime hangouts. Harmony’s 24 rooms are scattered across its lush property, and feature Midcentury inspired decor with vaulted wood ceilings and private patios with hammocks and outdoor showers. Amenities include a beautiful pool and small spa, plus great freebies like Wi-Fi, breakfast, daily yoga classes, beach bikes, and loaner iPads -- but nightly rates are among the highest in Nosara. Travelers looking for something a bit more affordable might prefer the nearby Living Hotel -- which still offers free breakfast, yoga, and bikes.

Mamma Rosa Apartahotel
Mts Norte de Cachos Surf 75, Guiones Beach

Mamma Rosa Apartahotel is a two-pearl property that appeals to young backpackers and budget travelers. The hotel has a prime location across the street from Playa Guiones, and offers free surfboard storage, breakfast, and Wi-Fi. Spartan rooms leave a lot to be desired -- their decor is mismatched and dated and the water pressure is dismal, but the air-conditioning works well and safes are provided for storing valuables. The on-site surf school could be the biggest draw; it offers lessons and board rentals. On the downside, there’s no pool on the premises. Budget travelers looking for a property with a few more amenities might prefer Jungles Edge, though it’s much farther from the beach.

Moana Surf Resort
Meters North Of Casa Romantica 50, Playa Guiones

The intimate Moana Surf Resort is a beautiful upper-middle-range boutique set amid lush, jungle-like grounds with private walking access to Playa Guiones, one of the top surfing spots in the region. Its six rooms range from spacious studios with kitchenettes to huge three-bedroom suites for up to eight guests. All units are decorated with natural woods and feature great amenities, including smart TVs, free Wi-Fi, laptop-sized safes, and air-conditioning. Most guests come here for the hotel’s excellent surf lessons, but great yoga classes, a small plunge pool, and massage services are also on offer here. A wonderful, healthful breakfast is served every morning free of charge, but the hotel lacks a full restaurant. However, there are plenty of dining options and shops within an easy walk of the hotel. Surfers seeking something slightly cheaper may want to compare rates at the Olas Verdes Hotel

Costa Rica Yoga Spa
300 meters south of the Rio Montana

Costa Rica Yoga Spa is an intimate, all-inclusive, eight-room retreat set on a breezy mountaintop overlooking the distant Pacific and the protected Ostional National Wildlife Refuge. Catering to yoga retreats, the hotel offers immaculate, although basic, bunk rooms with shared baths as well as more sophisticated suites with private baths and air-conditioning. Wellness is the focus for most guests, and they tend to spend time meditating, practicing yoga, enjoying massages, or writing in journals as they sway in the rope hammocks that line the terrace corridor outside the rooms. While the resort is not located on the beach, the staff provides daily shuttle service to nearby beaches and can also arrange surf lessons and a variety of adventure tours.

Living Hotel
G-Section, Playa Guiones

With an open-air yoga studio and a health cafe, the two-and-a-half-pearl Living Hotel resembles many of its competitors in Nosara. Its nine rooms are simply decorated spaces equipped with air-conditioning, mini-fridges, and electronic safes, although their best feature could be their private outdoor porches with hammocks. A small pool, free Wi-Fi, loaner beach bikes, and daily yoga classes add to the property's appeal. Its location is a five-minute walk from Playa Guiones and a handful of local restaurants, too. Despite all it offers, nightly rates are a bit high for the pearl level. Travelers should comparison shop a bit before booking; another hotel in the area that also offers yoga classes and healthful, primarily vegetarian food is the Costa Rica Yoga Spa.

Jungles Edge
200 meters north of 506 Tennis Center 50 meters east of Il Basilico Restaurant, Nosara 50206 Costa Rica

Jungles Edge is a two-pearl property that falls somewhere between a budget hotel and a hostel. The hotel’s 38 rooms are a wide-ranging mix of shared and private tents, reconfigured shipping containers, and hilltop villas with private bathrooms. Jungles Edge has a beautiful infinity pool, an open-air yoga studio, and a juice bar where guests like to hang out. The atmosphere is warm and communal, but some travelers may find the property a bit too rustic. Plus, Jungles Edge is located in the jungle, about a 20-minute walk from the beach. Budget travelers looking for something closer to the surf might prefer Mamma Rosa Apartahotel, though it doesn’t have the same community-centric vibe as Jungles Edge.

The Westin Golf Resort & Spa, Playa Conchal - All-Inclusive
Playa Conchal Guanacaste

The Westin Golf Resort & Spa, Playa Conchal is a four-pearl all-inclusive resort located in the northeastern part of Guanacaste. The resort’s 326 guest rooms are understated and contemporary, with many featuring a smart split-level design to separate the bedroom and living area. With 11 restaurants, two enormous pools, access to an idyllic beach, and a nonstop entertainment line-up, there's plenty to keep guests busy. The property’s forested grounds attract wildlife, giving guests a glimpse of the “real” Costa Rica, but ocean views are few and far between. For those who are fans of big, all-inclusive properties, the Westin is a top-notch choice, but it might be worth comparing rates and amenities with the Hotel Riu Palace Costa Rica on Playa Matapalo.

Reserva Conchal Beach Resort, Golf & Spa
Cabo Velas, Reserva Conchal

Reserva Conchal is a stylish, four-pearl property located on gorgeous Playa Conchal beach. Its 40 condos are polished and modern, with each offering between one and five bedrooms. Every unit is individually decorated, but all have full kitchens, furnished balconies or terraces, homey living areas, as well as washers and dryers. The property’s main building is home to an extensive line-up of upscale amenities, including two wonderful pools, an open-air restaurant, as well as a spa, a fitness center, and a golf course shared with the neighboring Westin Playa Conchal resort. The primary drawback here is the condos' location: They aren't located on the beach and require a short drive or shuttle ride away to reach the main building. Travelers may want to compare rates and features with Hacienda Pinilla, just outside Tamarindo.
