Copley Square Hotel

This historic 143-room hotel in Back Bay features cutely decorated (if tiny) rooms, a fun martini bar, free Wi-Fi, and free wine and coffee in the cozy lobby. The fitness center is small and the restaurant doesn't serve lunch unless requested for a private function. Low prices make it a solid value choice, however, especially for the central Copley Square location.

Eliot Hotel

Just steps from from charming Newbury Street, this classy and historic boutique hotel housed in an elegant Neo-Georgian corner building offers mostly huge suites with (smallish) marble bathroom and an excellent Japanese restaurant overseen by a James Beard Award-winning chef. Guests here enjoy other nice extras as well, like free welcome chocolate cookies and nightly turndowns. Though the Eliot offers free passes to an around-the-corner Boston Sports Club -- a nicer gym option than competitor Fifteen Beacon's -- it can't beat Fifteen Beacon's long list of luxury amenities, including in-room gas fireplaces and free Lexus hotel car service. But you can stay at the Eliot for considerably less -- and the tradeoff may be worth it.

Copley House
239 W Newton St

The Copley House is a collection of four classic townhouse buildings that offer guests apartment-style living at budget rates. They're located in a historic residential area on the edge of Back Bay, near Northeastern University and South End. Amenities vary from building to building and floor, so there are different sizes and decor styles, but all include cooking and dining amenities from stoves to flatware. Some have access to rooftops and balconies. None of the buildings have elevators, so guests with heavy luggage or disabilities should opt for ground-floor apartments, which are more easily accessible but dimly lit.

Constitution Inn
150 3rd Ave, Charlestown Navy Yard

The budget-friendly, three-pearl Constitution Inn is located at one end of the Freedom Trail -- one of Boston’s most popular attractions and the historic hub of the city. The hotel offers a free shuttle to the North End area of Boston and is attached to a YMCA that has a large lap pool, fitness center, and indoor basketball court. Business travelers are also drawn to this nautical-themed property with a business center and four well-equipped meeting rooms. The 147 guest rooms are contemporary, but have some dated decor, and include flat-screen TVs, microwaves, and mini-fridges. Some rooms and all Suites have kitchenettes with stoves, though the hotel doesn’t provide cookware or dishes. And complaints have been made concerning technical issues with the air-conditioning and cleanliness. Dining options like breakfast are not provided. Travelers may want to check the prices at the budget-friendly Midtown Hotel.

The Verb Hotel

A massive black-and-white photograph of a dude giving the peace sign welcomes guests to the entrance of the three-pearl Verb Hotel in Boston. For the most part, the peace sign is a fitting gesture for a property whose vibe is all about celebrating music and the good times that Boston has to offer, whether it means catching a game at Fenway Park (less than a five-minute walk), or enjoying a poolside cocktail from Hojoko, the Japanese pub. The Verb tries hard to seem hip, and you can tell. The 94 stylishly simple guest rooms include typewriters, coffeemakers, and C.O. Bigelow toiletries. Valet parking is overpriced, and there's no business center. The nearby Hotel Commonwealth offers substance and style and it’s just as close to Fenway.

Boston Hotel Buckminster
500 Commonwealth Avenue Fenway–Kenmore Boston 2606

With 116 rooms, The Hotel Boston Buckminster is a mid-size, two-and-a-half-pearl property in an ideal spot in the heart of Kenmore Square -- close to Fenway Park, Boston University, and the House of Blues. Its retro character might appeal to history buffs or sports fans, but the shabby furniture and outdated amenities may be otherwise off-putting to guests expecting a modern hotel. Standard Rooms are particularly run down, but the suites were formerly college apartments and are in significantly better condition (some have full-size fridges and spacious living rooms) -- so it might be worth requesting an upgrade. If not, the similarly priced Verb Hotel is just as close to Fenway Park and has free breakfast and a trendier feel.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Boston - Downtown

The most persuasive argument in favor of the Doubletree is it's downtown location just blocks from Boston's Theater District and the Boston Common. Decor is lackluster, save for in the lobby which received a renovation in 2012. Room renovations are slated to begin later in 2013. Until that time, better, comparably priced options include the 98-room budget boutique Harborside, which is light on amenities but clean, comfortable, and quiet.

enVision Hotel Boston - Longwood
81 South Huntington Avenue

The chic 39-room enVision Hotel Boston stands in a historic building on the edge of Jamaica Plain and Mission Hill neighborhoods. The mid-range hotel is most convenient for its medical rate and proximity to Longwood Medical Center, but is also fairly close to Fenway and across the street from Olmstead Park. There’s no restaurant on-site, and the area lacks dining and nightlife options, so hungry guests have to look elsewhere for anything more substantial than a cafe snack. Some rooms face the park and all include Keurig coffeemakers and flat-screen TVs. The nearby Inn at Longwood Medical is closer to restaurants, but lacks some of the trendy flair that enVision offers—like a Wii Fit in the gym, iPads in the business center, and carefully designed rooms.

Hilton Garden Inn Boston Logan Airport
100 Boardman St

The three-pearl Hilton Garden Inn Boston Logan Airport is ideal for business travelers or those needing a convenient place to sleep near to the airport. It's a six-minute drive to the airport and a 15-minute drive from downtown Boston's attractions. The 178 rooms are spacious with a classic look and convenient amenities like mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner (note that breakfast is not included in all room rates). There's also a lounge bar and 24-hour convenience store. Business travelers appreciate the 24-hour business center and fitness center, while all types of guests enjoy the indoor swimming pool. Freebies include a 24-hour shuttle, on-site parking, and Wi-Fi. Travelers can also consider the Comfort Inn & Suites Boston Logan International Airport, which has free breakfast.

Ames Boston Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton
1 Court Street Downtown Boston

This high-design property exudes sophistication. Period details -- the building, Boston's first skyscraper, dates back to 1889 -- are juxtaposed against sleek David Rockwell design. Rooms are gorgeous, with a black and white motif, comfortable beds, and modern technology. Bathrooms are similarly stylish, with Malin + Goetz toiletries and rain showerheads. The fitness center is small, but well-equipped, a continental breakfast is served daily, and meeting spaces are pleasant. There aren't many features besides the restaurant, but the service is solid and the location near Faneuil Hall and Beacon Hill is great. It's a first-rate choice for business travelers, trendy singles, and couples.
