Hilton Boston Back Bay

Across the street from the Hynes Convention Center in Back Bay, this 390-room Hilton features big rooms with comfortable Hilton Serenity beds, a spacious and free business lounge, and a sunlit fitness center with a lap pool and outdoor deck. Sure, it's not as classy as the nearby Westin Copley Place or Sheraton Boston -- but the rates are usually lower.

Lenox Hotel
61 Exeter Street Boylston

A prime downtown location and immediate proximity to shops, restaurants, and the Boston Marathon route, makes the upscale Lenox Hotel an ideal location from which to base a tourist trip to Boston. After a complete remodel in 2015, the entire Beaux Arts hotel -- including the 214 rooms, two restaurants, and common areas -- feels classic, vibrant, and chic. While it lacks an on-site pool or spa, the hotel provides a number of noteworthy amenities including free car services, free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour fitness center, wood-burning fireplaces in some rooms, and a legitimate Irish pub. The nearby Copley Square Hotel has a martini bar and is within walking distance to Fenway Park, and while its rates are similar it lacks the same upscale features.

Hyatt Regency Boston

The upscale, 502-room Hyatt Regency Boston is a contemporary high-rise hotel located in the downtown Boston theater district, a spot that's convenient for both tourists and business travelers. Features include several bars, and a farm-to-table restaurant. Guest rooms are spacious, understated, and sophisticated, with pillow-top beds and large flat-screen HDTVs. Nearby are the similarly priced Ames, which has a trendier feel, and the Intercontinental Boston, which has a waterfront location.

Ramada by Wyndham Boston
800 William T Morrissey Blvd

The lower-middle-range Ramada Boston is ideal for families seeking a budget hotel away from the hustle and bustle of Boston. Although this 174-room property sits on the outskirts of town, guests can access the airport or a metro station via the hotel’s free shuttle service. The free breakfast buffet and seasonal, outdoor saltwater pool are nice perks during a stay, too. The spacious guest rooms, some with microwaves and mini-fridges, are convenient for many travelers. But there are some downsides, namely the hotel's dated decor, and some cleanliness and maintenance issues. As an alternative, the hotel's nearby sister property, Comfort Inn - Boston, offers more modern decor and a fitness center with similar rates.

Hampton Inn & Suites Boston Crosstown Center
811 Massachusetts Avenue

The three-pearl Hampton Inn and Suites Boston Crosstown Center is thoroughly middle of the road -- not bad and not exceptional. It's next door to Boston Medical Center and a five-minute drive to downtown; the immediate area is deserted at night. The free airport and hospital shuttles offer a level of comfort, as do the spacious 175 guest rooms with coffeemakers -- though traffic noise and ambulance sirens can make for a potentially noisy stay. Breakfast and Wi-Fi are free. Those on a budget may want to compare rates with the more basic BEST WESTERN PLUS Roundhouse Suites nearby, though note that it lacks the indoor pool found here.

Boston Marriott Copley Place

Boston Marriott Copley Place is a giant convention hotel situated in the heart of the Back Bay with direct access to a shopping mall and convention centers. The upscale hotel has an unmistakable chain-hotel feel, but it also offers the familiar comforts guests expect from a Marriott. There's a sports bar and a lounge, both serving food and drinks, a wellness center with a gym, pool, and hot tub, and massive business and conference facilities. The hotel's 1,148 guest rooms start at a nice 265 square feet and feature 55-inch flat-screen TVs with premium channels, mini-fridges, and Keurig coffeemakers. The biggest drawback? Extra daily fees for parking, breakfast, and in-room Wi-Fi add up. Guests looking to stay in the same complex might compare rates with The Westin Copley Place and the Sheraton Boston Hotel.

Boston Marriott Long Wharf

Surrounded by three parks, the New England Aquarium, and facing the harbor, the Boston Marriott Long Wharf owns a picturesque residence along the Long Wharf Pier on Boston Harbor. The idyllic waterfront address (near the airport, tourist sites, and downtown Boston) means this three-and-a-half-pearl property can afford to be expensive. Luckily the price tag translates to value that remains consistent even at 397 rooms: a clean, contemporary design, modern amenities, and spacious rooms with all the fixings. For those on a budget, it might be worth comparing rates with the nearby Hilton Boston Downtown -- a significantly cheaper stay that’s just as close to downtown.

Wyndham Boston Beacon Hill

THE HOTEL HAS RENOVATED SINCE OUR VISIT. WE WILL UPDATE OUR REVIEW AND PHOTOS AS SOON AS WE CAN. A clean 303-room business hotel across from the Massachusetts General Hospital in Beacon Hill. The outdoor pool, comfortable beds and free Wi-Fi are highlights, but the small bathrooms, tube TVs (in standard rooms), and outdated furniture make it worth comparing rates elsewhere.

Kimpton Nine Zero Hotel

The upscale Nine Zero Hotel is a stylish member of the trendy Kimpton chain. It has a convenient location on the Freedom Trail and across the street from Boston Common. Characteristic Kimpton warmth and trendiness is evident in the free evening wine hours, free loaner bikes, and dedicated pet concierge. The 190 guest rooms are clean and fun, but compact, with an Art Deco meets Industrial vibe. Expect to pay extra for parking; Wi-Fi is free for Kimpton loyalty program members (it's free to join). Visitors who need more space (and a pool) may prefer the nearby Revere Hotel Boston Commons.

Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel

Opened in February 2008, this bright 450-room hotel offers a lot for the price -- fairly large, stylish rooms; an indoor pool; a great restaurant; and a lively bar. With a location that's ultra convenient to the airport, train station, and Boston Convention Center, it naturally attracts large groups but not so much so that individual guests feel lost or ignored.
