Omni Austin Hotel Downtown

The Omni is an upscale chain geared toward business travelers, with a prime downtown location within walking distance of the Sixth Street entertainment district. The soaring atrium lobby is bright and gleaming, the warm rooms have Texas-inspired decor and flat-screen TVs, and the chic rooftop pool with excellent city views is a notable draw. But most rooms have windows facing the atrium rather than the outside, which means that views are obstructed and privacy can be an issue.

InterContinental Stephen F. Austin

Located in the heart of downtown Austin, the InterContinental Stephen F. Austin dates back to 1924 as the city's first high-rise building. The hotel also boasts one of the best restaurants in town, and its bar -- with the only terrace on Congress Avenue -- is a gathering spot for legislators. All 189 rooms were renovated with an old-Texas design in 2013, and they're comfortably outfitted with great beds, Keurig machines, and flat-screen TVs, however, some noise does trickle in from the hallway. Although a tiny indoor lap pool, hot tub, and fitness center are well-maintained, the hotel notably lacks a spa. Nearby options worth considering include The Driskill for history or the Omni for a rooftop pool.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Austin - University Area

This mid-range chain is convenient if you're looking to stay near to the University of Texas, or have business in the area -- and don't mind staying by a busy interstate highway, with few other attractions nearby. The rooms are comfortable and modern, with big flat-screens, standard Wi-Fi is free, and there's a solid outdoor pool.

Kimber Modern Hotel

This stylish boutique hotel in South Austin has only five guest rooms, and caters to guests looking for a truly private and relaxing hideaway. An outdoor courtyard is shaded by tall trees and features a sleek water feature and hammocks. Just off the courtyard is the hotel's common area, where guests will find cool mid-century modern seating, a trendy Apple iMac computer and printer, and a full kitchen. The bright and airy rooms all have platform beds with comfy bedding, iPod docks, LCD TVs, and white decor. Suites have spacious bathrooms with freestanding tubs, and each room has a mini-fridge. But it's worth comparing rates with the nearby (and just as hip) Hotel San Jose.

La Villa Vista
6701 Oasis Pass

A pleasing mixture of Old World Spanish hacienda and Tuscan villa, this upscale bed-and-breakfast houses five slightly overstuffed rooms furnished with floor-sweeping drapes, embroidered tapestries, and bronze statuettes -- some of which could use a good dusting. Views of lake Travis lend the property its name, and vistas of the water from the small infinity-edge pool and hot tub are gorgeous. A substantial hot breakfast is included in the room charge. The inn sits on a cliff above the lake and while a popular restaurant is five minutes away on foot, a car is necessary to reach downtown Austin. Hotel Saint Cecilia is an upscale boutique alternative with a hipper, sexier vibe -- but prices are higher.

Hampton Inn & Suites Austin - Downtown/Convention Center

The mid-range, 209-room Hampton Inn & Suites Austin-Downtown/Convention Center is a block from the Austin Convention Center and an easy walk to other attractions. It has an impressive lobby with rich-wood paneling and a covered terrace on the second floor overlooking the street. A free hot breakfast buffet is included in the room rates, and there's an on-site cafe and bar, a rooftop pool, fitness center, and meeting space. But the valet-only parking can be expensive. Rooms are spacious and attractively styled -- they have flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and the hotel provides room service from two nearby restaurants. Suites add microwaves, wet bars, and sleeper sofas. Rates are competitive with other downtown hotels, but travelers might want to also check out the Hyatt Place Austin Downtown next door, which has comparable rates and amenities.

Crowne Plaza Austin
132 TT Krishnamachari Road Austin Nagar Alwarpet Chennai Chennai

The upper-middle-range Crowne Plaza Austin is a good alternative to the city’s downtown hotels. It’s right off Interstate 35, about 10 minutes north of downtown. There's not much within walking distance, but a free shuttle will take guests to area restaurants. Other highlights include free parking, 17,000 square feet of meeting space, 24/7 business and fitness centers, outdoor pool and whirlpool, and concierge services. A full-service restaurant and lounge serves meals as well, though breakfast isn't included in rates. Its 293 rooms are spacious and include mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. However, this is an older building, and the public spaces look dated. Rates are attractive, especially when compared with downtown hotels, but it may be worth comparison shopping with the nearby Holiday Inn Austin Midtown, which has similar amenities and rates.

The Westin Austin Downtown

The Westin Austin Downtown is a four-pearl property that’s a prime example of the Westin chain brand. It’s located in downtown Austin, near 6th Street and the Austin Convention Center. The hotel offers a great rooftop pool and bar, Southern cuisine restaurant with occasional live music, modern gym, and large meeting rooms. The chain's helpful New Balance fitness gear lending program is also on offer. The 366 guest rooms are contemporary and come with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. With a location one block from 6th Street, guests note bothersome noise into the early morning hours, especially on the weekends. Another drawback is a pricey charge for valet parking. The nearby Hyatt Regency Austin is a good alternative that has a quieter environment and three restaurants.

Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Austin

The Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Austin is a three-and-a-half-pearl chain hotel with surprisingly chic, individual style. Situated off I-35, it's about a 10-minute drive north of downtown and is a solid alternative to the city's more central hotels. The property's 350 guest rooms are spacious and modern, with roomy bathrooms, 42-inch flat-screen TVs, and desks with ergonomic chairs. The hotel has a stylish on-site restaurant and bar, 24-hour room service, a fitness center, and an outdoor pool and hot tub, but breakfast, parking, and high-speed Wi-Fi cost extra. For guests who'd rather be in walking distance to city sights, there's another DoubleTree near the state capital (DoubleTree Suites by Hilton - Austin) with larger rooms, though it lacks the gentle quirk of this property, and tends to be pricier.

Archer Hotel Austin
3121 Palm Way

The upscale Archer Hotel Austin is a fun and modern hotel situated in the heart of Austin's Domain Northside shopping district. There are ample dining and shopping options in the immediate vicinity and downtown Austin is about a 15-minute drive away. The 171 chic guest rooms are modern with amenities like minibars, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi; some have private balconies and vintage board games. The hotel's restaurant and bar is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A highlight is the outdoor pool patio area with pool bar, swimming pool, large flat-screen TV, and ample seating areas. Business travelers may appreciate the fitness center, meeting and event space, and business center. Travelers looking for somewhere closer to downtown can also consider W Austin, a trendy hotel with rooftop pool.
