Embassy Suites by Hilton Austin - Downtown South Congress
300 S Congress Ave

While unmistakably a chain hotel, the 259-room Embassy Suites by Hilton Austin - Downtown/Town Lake makes a strong showing amongst Austin’s array of upper-middle-range hotels with its fashionable lobby, spacious rooms, and excellent freebies. Standout features include a free evening reception and a generous free breakfast buffet with a well-liked omelet station. There’s also a 24-hour grab-and-go market and a lobby bar serving drinks and casual dishes. The hotel has a nicely equipped gym and a modern indoor pool with stone accents and a whirlpool. Rooms and suites are spacious with mini-fridges, microwaves, coffeemakers, and TVs with premium channels. Parking cost extra, and free Wi-Fi requires joining the chain's free loyalty program. Guests can walk to the heart of downtown in about 10 minutes, but those who prefer to be in the thick of things might consider the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton - Austin.

HYATT house Austin / Arboretum
3612 Tudor Boulevard Gateway Austin

This three-pearl, pet-friendly Northwest Austin hotel has suites with kitchens and living areas that make it popular with extended-stay business travelers and families. The location provides easy access to the highway, as well as shopping centers, but it's close to a 30-minute drive from downtown. Features include an outdoor swimming pool with gas grills for cooking, a 24-hour fitness center and business center, free shuttle service to area attractions, an impressive free breakfast, and free Wi-Fi throughout. An on-site restaurant and bar, and laundry facilities round out the amenities. It's worth comparing rates with the nearby Staybridge Suites Austin NW, which has free weeknight receptions that include beer, wine, and a light dinner.

Hotel San Jose

They say everything's bigger in Texas, but this intimate "bungalow-style" boutique hotel might be the exception. The 40-room property, originally built as a motel in 1939, incorporates a stylish, minimalist design and sits at the center of Austin's SoCo neighborhood, a trendy area known for great music. The hotel reflects its hipster surroundings by offering lots of cool stuff on loan: an excellent music library (both CDs and pre-filled iPods), a video collection, Polaroid cameras, bicycles, and even a Remington typewriter. There's a small swimming pool, an outdoor lounge serving drinks and snacks, and the locally famous Jo's Coffee next door. Urban-chic rooms have modern wooden platform beds, polished concrete floors, paisley bedspreads and flat-screen TVs, though noise can occasionally be a problem and the bathrooms could use some updating and cleaning. It's an excellent boutique pick overall, and is especially popular during the South by Southwest music festival.

Holiday Inn Austin Midtown

Although located in a slightly sketchy neighborhood, opposite a shopping mall whose glory days are long-gone, this property's spacious, bright rooms are far more sophisticated than you might expect from a Holiday Inn. But it's a little far from the action and attractions downtown.

W Austin

W Austin is a luxury hotel located in the heart of Austin's 2nd Street District, close to sights, shopping, and entertainment. The hotel's 251 rooms are housed on the first 16 floors of a mixed hotel-and-condo tower, and a minimalist design throughout incorporates elements of Southwestern decor. Rooms are average in size, comfortably stylish, and feature modern amenities, like flat-screen TVs, minibars, and espresso machines. The hotel's Living Room bar areas and rooftop pool are popular gathering spots for Austinites, and the on-site restaurant, Trace, is one of the city's culinary hot spots. This is the trendiest hotel in the Downtown area, but travelers in search for a more traditional stay might prefer the beautifully restored 1886 The Driskill Hotel, though there is no pool there.

Holiday Inn Austin-Town Lake

As far as Holiday Inns go, this three-pearl hotel is a nice one, thanks to renovations that finished up in 2017. However, location isn't ideal for those without a car -- most tourist and business attractions in Austin are within driving distance, and the hotel's free shuttle gets booked quickly. However, the 322 rooms are modernized and there's an outdoor pool that overlooks Town Lake. Surprisingly, breakfast isn't free, and it's expensive for the average chain fare it is. For a mid-range option more centrally located, the Hampton Inn & Suites downtown is a block away from the city's convention center, though it lacks lake vistas.

Four Seasons Hotel Austin

The Four Seasons Austin is one of the city’s most beloved and well-known luxury properties, enjoying a prime downtown location and phenomenal lake views. The service and amenities are top-notch, as you’d expect from the Four Seasons. The rooms, however, do not deliver the level of luxury you'd expect from the brand; they're comfortable enough, and feature up-to-date technology, but the decor feels generic and a little dated.

Lake Austin Spa Resort
1705 S Quinlan Park Rd

The luxurious, 40-room Lake Austin Spa Resort is an all-inclusive destination spa and wellness retreat on 19 lakeside acres. Guests can paddleboard, kayak, canoe, hike, or relax by the lake at this bucolic property in Texas Hill Country. In addition, there are fitness classes, wellness lectures, yoga, three swimming pools, and over a hundred spa and salon treatment options. The restaurant serves gourmet spa cuisine using produce and herbs grown at the resort's organic garden. Guest rooms are clean and bright, although small, with private patios and beautiful, spacious bathrooms. Families seeking a lakeside property with pools and a spa might want to consider the Lakeway Resort and Spa, which is about 25 minutes away and has activities for kids (children under 14 are not allowed here).

Austin Southpark

Located in Southpark, this upper-middle-range chain is popular with business travelers and families. There's not much within walking distance, but highway access is easy and the hotel is a five-minute drive south of downtown Austin. The 313 rooms have traditional and generic decor, but all have flat-screen TVs, writing desks, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges. Austin Southpark's spa, heated indoor/outdoor pool and whirlpool, and on-site grill and coffee shop are all perks. The hotel's pet-friendly policy and kid-friendly programs are also pluses, but in-room Wi-Fi access costs a fee (it's free for those in Omni's free loyalty program). The 49-room Casulo Hotel is a boutique alternative in Southeast Austin.

Hotel Ella

The four-pearl Hotel Ella is a charming boutique property set in a beautiful historic mansion near the University of Texas and within walking distance of several Austin attractions. Stylish modern interiors include a casual American bistro and an elegant bar, while a lovely courtyard area offers a small pool. Some of the features here are a bit disappointing, like the tiny fitness room that has just two machines and the lack of a business center, but the hotel does offer an array of freebies, including car service within a three-mile radius of the property. The 47 guest rooms are spacious and stylishly decorated, with modern comforts like large flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, well-stocked minibars, and lovely marble bathrooms. The nearby AT&T Hotel & Conference Center has a larger pool and fitness center as well as more on-site dining options, but it's not as charming or stylish as Hotel Ella.
