The Driskill

The 189-room Driskill Hotel sets a new standard for historic hotels. The hotel was built in 1886 and beautifully restored, and the gleaming marble floors, towering columns, and stained-glass ceilings evoke a bygone era. Tasteful, elegant rooms follow suit with designer furnishings, towering ceilings with crown moldings, brocade carpeting, and pretty bathrooms with black marble floors and counters (but shower/tub combos). They're a bit small, though -- but that's to be expected in a historic downtown hotel. There's no pool or other on-site amenities besides a nice fitness center and small massage room, but the location in the heart of Austin's famous Sixth Street entertainment district is prime.

Miraval Austin Resort & Spa
13500 FM 2769

**Travaasa Austin is closed and will reopen as Miraval Austin in late 2018. We will update our photos and review as soon as possible. **Travaasa Austin is an upscale spa resort set on a hilltop of a gorgeous nature preserve with forested canyons, about half an hour from downtown Austin. Its 72 rooms are housed in seven buildings and offer private balconies with beautiful canyon or garden views. Hiking trails, an infinity-edge pool enclosed by a wooden deck, and a luxurious spa are just some of the amenities here, and there's a restaurant serving organic, local fare, with many of the ingredients used sourced from the hotel's own farm. The serene atmosphere is furthered by the over-16 policy. For something kid-friendly, travelers might want to consider the Lakeway Resort and Spa instead, which is scenically set on Lake Travis and also has a pool, spa, kids’ play area, and waterslide.

Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa
8212 Barton Club Dr

The 312-room Barton Creek Resort is sprawled across lovely grounds centered within three golf courses in the hills west of downtown Austin. You’ll find plenty to do on-site, including golf, tennis, a spa, indoor and outdoor pools, a large fitness center, great shopping, and even family-friendly scavenger hunts -- but Austin’s downtown attractions are nearly a 30-minute drive away. Rooms are spacious and thoughtfully decorated with at-home touches, and each one comes complete with fabulous views of the surrounding areas, as well as large flat-screen TVs equipped with satellite cable channels and a gaming system -- though there's a daily fee for Wi-Fi.

Hotel Saint Cecilia

Stylish Hotel St. Cecilia, with just 14 rooms, is a boutique hotel in the truest sense of the word. It features a sexy lounge (complete with patio seating), spacious grounds, and uber chic rooms that meld with Austin's weird vibe and cool music scene via distinct decorative touches and amenities. The centerpiece is an historic Victorian home fronting spacious, sylvan grounds and harboring four of the hotel’s beautiful suites. The long, narrow pool offers a classy place to beat the Austin heat. Plus, it's located in one of Austin's coolest neighborhoods, close to downtown shopping, historic sites, and entertainment.

Hotel Granduca Austin
320 S Capital of Texas Hwy, Bldg B

Located about 10 miles from the heart of Downtown Austin, the Hotel Granuca Austin is a luxury property styled after an Italian Villa, perched on a hillside with astounding views. Guest rooms and suites are spacious with homey, high-end Tuscan decor and amenities like minibars and bathrobes, plus huge walk-in showers. There’s also a beautiful courtyard; an outdoor pool with a bar, hot tub, submerged loungers, and cabanas; a classy Italian restaurant and cocktail bar sometimes featuring live music; a billiards room; a gym with a sauna and steam room; two spa treatment rooms; and more. Travelers can expect high-end service like concierge, valet, and room service, available around the clock. Those on the hunt for more wellness facilities, like an indoor pool and tennis courts, might consider the nearby Barton Creek Resort & Spa

Casulo Hotel
3017 South Interstate 35 Frontage Road East Riverside - Oltorf Austin

The Casulo offers chic boutique style at an affordable price, with contemporary, zen-like decor, and rooms all featuring big soaking tubs (most next to peek-a-boo glass windows). But it's a 10-minute drive south of downtown Austin, so no popular tourist sights are within walking distance, and there's no full restaurant on-site -- just a bar and lobby cafe.

Hilton Garden Inn Austin North
12400 North Ih-35 Building C

This Hilton Garden Inn is a perfectly comfortable, reasonably priced option for travelers looking to stay in North Austin. You get what you'd expect from a run-of-the-mill chain: generic rooms, a cloudy outdoor pool, a small fitness room.

Wyndham Garden Austin
3401 S Interstate 35

The 210-room, mid-range Wyndham Garden Austin is located in South Austin, near St. Edward's University and a 10-minute drive from Austin Convention Center and South Congress restaurants. Rooms are comfortable but have some dated furnishings; all have flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges. There are plenty of perks for business travelers, such as large in-room workspaces, a business center with computers and printers, and meeting space galore. Features include a restaurant and bar serving burgers and beer; free high-speed Wi-Fi; a sunny fitness center; and a sizable outdoor swimming pool with hot tub. There is no free breakfast offered. If you’re looking for more of a boutique hotel experience in the same area and price range (and breakfast included), check out the Casulo Hotel.

South Congress Hotel

This trendy, 83-room boutique opened in 2015 and has made a name for itself thanks to its stunning design and excellent location on Austin’s bustling South Congress Avenue. Its proximity to popular bars and restaurants, as well as the hip, sophisticated vibe largely with couples, though business travelers and families can also be spotted. Modern, minimalist rooms have sleek bathrooms, LED TVs, free Wi-Fi, and minibars. Solid features include several excellent bars and restaurants, including a Japanese eatery and rustic cafe. An outdoor swimming pool with lounge chairs, 24-hour gym, and free shuttle service round out the amenities. There's no full spa and parking is pricey, however. Travelers looking for a bit more intimate stay may prefer the 14-room Hotel Saint Cecilia nearby, which has quirkier rooms.

Hilton Austin
500 E 4th St

Located across the street from the Austin Convention Center, the four-pearl Hilton Austin is one of the city's major hotels for convention attendees. As such, the 801-room property has 80,000 square feet of event space and buzzes with activity year-round. It’s built for the crowds, with a spacious lobby that was renovated in 2016, and multiple restaurants and bars, including a Starbucks. Other highlights include a full-service spa, outdoor pool, and a large fitness center. Decor in its contemporary guest rooms is a tad ho-hum, but amenities are a plus, with coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and upscale Peter Thomas Roth bath products. Travelers looking for a step up can consider W Austin, but it isn't as close to the convention center.
