EMA House Hotel Suites
Nordstrasse 1

The three-and-a-half-pearl EMA House Hotel Suites doesn't offer much in the way of standard hotel amenities, but its 23 modern suites, which range from studios to two-bedroom units, far exceed competitors in this range. They're done in stylish furnishings, and have amenities like Nespresso machines and Blu-Ray players, and many have full kitchens suited for long stays. The location isn't prime, but there's a tram stop right outside, and it's a 10-minute walk to some of the city's sights, such as the Swiss National Museum and main train station. Travelers seeking a more central location could compare rates with the Central Plaza Hotel, though it's a touch less stylish. Those looking for lower rates nearby could consider the Hotel Continental Zurich - MGallery Collection.

Baur au Lac
Talstrasse 1, 8001 Zürich

Considered one of the best hotels in Europe, the five-pearl Baur au Lac is a 170-year-old property set in beautiful gardens on the edge of Lake Zurich, just off Zurich’s famous luxury shopping street, Bahnhofstrasse. Its 120 guest rooms and suites are spacious and lavish, with marble bathrooms and many luxurious extras. The hotel offers three fine-dining restaurants, one of which has a Michelin star. Not surprisingly, the rates here are some of the highest in the city, but the hotel lacks certain facilities commonly found in luxury properties, like a swimming pool or spa. For those added amenities, travelers might want to consider the upscale Swissotel Zurich, which also has lower rates.

Crowne Plaza Zurich
Badenerstrasse 420

The Crowne Plaza Zurich Hotel is a business-oriented chain property located in the west of Zurich, a 15-minute tram ride into the city center. With 365 rooms, it qualifies as Zurich's largest hotel. Each room has contemporary, minimalist decor and decent amenities -- including international plug points -- though the free standard Wi-Fi can be a little slow. Dining facilities include a beer garden open in summer, and the attached health club has a swimming pool. While the hotel is a bit removed from central Zurich and feels a bit dated in parts, it's a reasonably-priced option with a solid range of facilities. Travelers could also compare rates and facilities with the neighboring Ramada Hotel Zurich City.

Swissotel Zurich
Schulstrasse 44

Swissotel Zurich is an upscale business hotel that towers over part of Zurich's Oerlikon district, a short drive from the city center. While the spacious lobby area is hip and funky, the 347 rooms have understated modern decor and run small. The views from the 32nd-floor swimming pool can't fail to impress, and the spa and health facilities are better than expected this caliber of hotel. This is a great value for an upscale property, but the tradeoff is location. Those who want to stay in the city center should expect higher rates.

B2 Boutique Hotel + Spa
Brandschenkestrasse 152

The four-pearl B2 Boutique Hotel + Spa is housed in the former 1880 Hurlimann Brewery on a hillside outside town. It is part of a repurposed complex that includes Google and the Thermal Bath & Spa Zurich, to which guests get private access and a discount -- it includes a heated rooftop infinity pool and thermal baths. The Bahnhof Zurich Enge railway station is an eight-minute walk from the hotel, and it's 10-minute tram ride -- or drive -- to the city center. The 60 rooms are stylish, with such amenities as open rainfall showers, Nespresso machines, and free minibars. Travelers looking to stay closer to the city center could compare rates with the Park Hyatt Zurich, which has its own spa.

25hours Hotel Zurich West
Pfingstweidstrasse 102

Loaded with hip designs, the 25hours Hotel Zurich West is a cheerful, upscale property in the Technopark area, a 20-minute tram ride to Old Town. Quirky and colorful designs fill the stylish, modern interiors that include a restaurant and bar serving Asian and Mediterranean cuisine, as well as three meeting rooms that include a demonstration kitchen. The business area is equipped with two iMacs, and there's a tiny fitness room as well as a cool, top-floor sauna with pink-tinted windows that overlook the city. The 126 trendy rooms and suites feature minibars and flat-screen TVs, some with private balconies. This hotel’s location is convenient for business, but travelers seeking something closer to the Old Town might want to consider Hotel Continental Zurich - MGallery Collection instead, though it has more expensive rates.

Small Luxury Hotel Ambassador Zurich
Falkenstrasse 6

The Ambassador à l’Opéra is an upscale, boutique property across the street from the Opera House and just a block from Lake Zurich. The vibe and general decor is traditional and elegant, if a bit staid (especially in the rooms, which can be small). In-room amenities are ample, with luxury touches including adjustable beds and a pillow menu. The on-site restaurant is also outstanding and views from the rooftop terrace are lovely. This all comes at a premium price tag, unsurprising for one of the city's best upscale hotels -- the Hotel Glaernischhof is often cheaper but more corporate in style. Those who want more features, such as a spa and fitness center, may prefer the similarly priced Zurich Marriott Hotel.

Sorell Hotel Zürichberg
Orellistrasse 21

The Sorell Hotel Zurichberg is an upscale property consisting of an original turn-of-the-century building and a super-modern annex rotunda, both set on a hillside overlooking Zurich. The location is peaceful and picturesque, while being just 10 minutes by car into the city or a five-minute walk from the nearest tram. The 66 rooms are sleek but simple, and most have superb views. The lack of a spa or fitness facilities on-site is a drawback, though the restaurant and bar are top-notch, and room rates are cheap by Zurich standards.

Storchen Zurich - Lifestyle Boutique Hotel
Weinplatz 2

Storchen Zurich is a 66-room, upscale hotel set in the center of Old Town. Its roots trace back more than 650 years, and it's the only hotel in Zurich that's right on the Limmat River. That means plenty of lovely waterway views from restaurant terraces and many of the rooms. Rooms have old-fashioned styling that include blue-and-white toile fabric, wooden furniture, and blue carpeting. Much of the hotel might feel a little dated, or charmingly traditional, depending on one's taste. For historic heritage with more chic interiors, travelers should check out the nearby Widder Hotel, but rates are higher.

Widder Hotel
Rennweg 7

The Widder Hotel is a superbly renovated luxury property with medieval heritage located right in the center of Zurich. Chic rooms feature a mix of historic decor features and contemporary touches, and all have high-end stereos and TVs. There's also an excellent on-site restaurant with a huge selection of single malt whiskies. While rates are high even for a Zurich luxury hotel, especially given the lack of spa or fitness facilities (consider the similarly priced Park Hyatt Zurich for these), the Widder is among the most unusual and special hotels you'll find in Zurich, if not in all of Switzerland.
